For media, I'd pick a distro that has the software you need. Most should work. I like Debian or CachyOS (Arch). Thr desktop environment is likely what will impact your media experience the most. I use Hyprland but wouldn't recommend it for a media desktop.

If you have a TV with low latency for gaming, 4K, and 120+hz, then you have a really expensive TV, and you likely care about quality. I'd reckon most of this popultion also owns a separate monitor for PC gaming.

My LG C2 hardware isn't powerful enough to stream higher than 60hz at 1080p, if I remember correctly. It also needs a LAN cord for consistency since the tv wifi adapter is not good. Instead I put moonlight on my steam deck and plugged that into the tv.

Agreed! I love my Trident. This is the best hobby I have taken up in a long time. So fulfilling. Especially now that I'm learning freecad. Getting started can be expensive. There is an awesome community on discord that loves to help, and there are lots of small businesses that sell every part you can think of, custom mods from github, and if you email them they will respond promptly and personally. 10/10

Web version sucks compared to desktop version, unless you use the apps minimally. That said, the Winapps repo is a good linux solution, running a windows VM and accessing the office apps via RDP so they feel like a native app. As soon as it gets wayland support, I'm making the full switch. Winapps in Xwayland has some issues.

This does feel a bit like propaganda. I'm a CPA with ex-Big4 audit experience, albeit only 4 years, and specialized in revenue rather than expenses. I just briefly read over the pwc summary of the related FASB standards covering Subtopics ASC 985-20 and ASC 350-40. It pretty much says that you expense everything on software that intended for selling until it's technologically feasible. Upgrades afterwards are capitalized, then amortized. Internal software development is capitalized. Like, if you build internal infrastructure, it likely has value, similar to PP&E. Differences is, Equipment is physical. The value of the software is the minds and time that went into it. I'm also certain that if you could prove to your auditors that your software is not worth much, you could probably expense more of the costs. This whole thread screams big tech company propaganda.

Yup, the key word for me is control. And over time, considering the continual loss of control, more people will adopt self hosting, and things will get better and easier. This mirrors my experience. I am the accounting manager responsible for updating these dashboards at my saas employer. Troubleshooting powerbi errors during month-end close is the most stress-inducing thing. And whenever management wants a dashboard edit, we have to somehow know that the spreadsheets being fed the powerbi cloud data will also change. Maybe an extra row inserted into the pivot table of ARR by product. Now any formulas directly referencing the cells rather than using XLOOKUP are pointing to the wrong product category. I was chewed out hard for that one a few days ago even though IT made that change, since it updated our report after review. TLDR: Powerbi suck, use a data warehouse and SQL for data transformations.

I feel like plain text accounting software is overkill for splitting vacation expenses. The Splitwise phone app is very good for this, and shares some of the responsibility.

Sorry for the pain you went through. I suffered subtle trauma as a kid. Some examples were verbal anger from father, lack of a model of a secure relationship since parents hated each other in private, no empathy, and rare sympathy, between all family members. We basically didn't care about each other but put on a facade of a happy family with others. Recently I came across Attachment Theory which describes types of insecure relationships compared to secure ones. Combined with some professional therapy, it has been enlightening and relieving understanding my issues. A long journey ahead. Reading about Attachment Theory is my recommendation for anyone feeling similarly.
