The problem is the current size of the world population is designed and fit for the Industrial Age and not for the Information Age.

What do you suggest we have to do to the "surplus" of manpower now?

Please no retraining nonsense as jobs will dwindle too and mirror the trend elsewhere.

Please show some political sense in your reply.

Just for the record, I'm not in favor of big biz either.

Apparently from the discussion here, working with recycled material is more costly for corporations and therefore they

would not be compelled to give up profits to save the environment and improve sustainability.

So, it's now either the people's or the govt's duty to step in and try to mitigate the risk since the market dynamics are

not favorable to work on their own.

People or govt could help by subsidizing the cost of recycling the materials and making it more appealing for businesses to

use them in their manufacturing processes and therefore preserving the environment.

As to which is better raising taxes or giving tax breaks from the point of view of govt interference, I believe that

incentive is less invasive and more importantly less coercive than raising taxes and distorting the market and pushing the

increase in operating costs to the consumers instead.

We're talking about two completely different market segments here; the corporate/enterprise market which provides more room for creative & cutting edge solutions to be implemented and then there's the SME & consumers which favor more conventional, user-friendly and "popular" solutions like WP and the likes.

Even Node or Ruby based static site generators can't compete with WP & PHP on the server. The ubiquity of PHP on web server installations is astounding and the ease of use of WP sp. for non techies in contrast with the technical knowledge and expertise expected to build and maintain a Jekyll powered website or [insert your favorite Nodejs generator] powered website.

where you could hire anyone from students, to sex-offender ex-Cons, to the mentally impaired ...

Are you suggesting forced labor camps even for mental patients and other disadvantaged groups in society?

Why do you go for the route of punishment (taxes) and not try positive reinforcement instead like incentives and or tax breaks?

and yet no single conviction for any bankster involved in all of these corruption scandals. Just fine the shareholders and fill the pockets of the fat cats in the govt to buy their silence and let the executives go free to keep plundering people's money.

A win-win for all except for we the people!

Pretty cool my man but how do you deal with false positives?

I don't know about hockey but in soccer (football), commentators are as much excited about near-goal scenarios like the ball hitting one of the posts or the goalie making a superb save as goals themselves.

I can't imagine employing such a system for football games. What do you think?

Why don't you take it one step further and question the viability of the model of work as one of the primary sources of "inspiration" and "core" aspects in life and that life should not be centered around this in light of the recent developments in the job market and technology?

Also, please debate why most humans have to work in the first place just to put food on the table while the 1% of Earth's population controlling ~40% of global wealth.

Is there ad blocker that only blocks the annoying ads, not the ones that we deem "OK?" Or do we just use the actions of the few to punish all ad-supported platforms?

You can whitelist the domains you deem trustworthy and interesting to serve you ads. I have made one of mine as I don't have any prob with viewing silly ads while browsing as a kind gesture to content creators to support their operations and efforts but what I do have a problem with is the invasive nature of advertisers to chase me everywhere I go on the web and trying to gather info and construct a profile of me and then sell it or leak it to third parties to win favors at the cost of my privacy. Here I need to step up and protect my privacy and fend off those intruders.

I don't give a shit about getting downvoted and I'll keep speaking my mind. As to why I was downvoted, the mindless HN swarm here can't handle any dissidence and when it encounters any opposing view that contradicts with its worldview, it attacks and neutralizes its prey as soon as possible to avoid the mental anguish that comes with challenging their preconceptions of the world around it.

It's the same story like that of Bernie Madoff and also the same morale. You're free to do whatever you want hustling & bustling screwing people over but if you dare to mess up with the wrong people, you're toast and you will be made an example of for everyone to see.

The author is a shill for the capitalists and corporations and he's just trying to make a buck here glamorizing underemployment and selling poverty and desperation to the masses in the name of modernity and progress.

It's been always like this for human labor throughout history and more specifically since the Agricultural Revolution. Human labor is always in surplus and this resource has been exploited by economic powers and interested parties in many ways from hardcore slavery to modern wage slavery but what changed recently was technology made it easier and more efficient to tap into this resource for anyone interested and thus this imbalance of power shifted in favor of the capitalists and business owners.

It seems that most of the gains that we take for granted like weekends and paid vacations and so and so forth that the labor movement acquired over the years since the advent of socialism are up for grabs and at risk of evaporating altogether.

Still beauty in it.

as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder but software development is an engineering discipline and won't be considered as an artistic medium not now not ever.

I can understand the philosophical dimension of software engineering but I am not even interested to entertain even for a second the concept of the art of writing software because it's just insane.

Why some people here insist that programming/coding is an art form?

No, despite how much you'd like to be and see it happening, it is not and will not be.

I have seen "democratic" teams spend over two months debating the merits of various solutions that both had about equal, but different, benefits and drawbacks.

Can't just these "democratic" teams solve these problems by a vote measure?

The #1 belligerent nation on Earth now is uncontestedly the USA and this is not because Americans are belligerent and aggressive by nature but because it happens that the globalists and the Elite made that country their HQ conducting their business operations out of it.

I think Osama Bin Laden had so many life-stabilizers i.e. women throughout his lifetime and yet he pursued the terrorist career with vengeance till the last breath.
