This sounds like Stanford maintains its elevators but the state doesn't have enough inspectors to to certify and renew paperwork. But the anecdotes in the beginning make you think Stanford is ignoring its responsibility. Maybe it is, but the lack of inspectors sounds more plausible

Is there a reason I should care about this dude's opinion?

I hope these return to work policies get outdated. Remote work is the single greatest thing about high speed communication in my opinion. A lot of tech advancement related to computers has proven to be underwhelming. We have fancy 3D games and social media and search engines. None of these things are better than a climbing rope, mountain bike, or good library in my experience.

I think AI will change how programmers do their jobs, not eliminate them. Messing around with ChatGPT, I was able to write a MUD server much faster than I could from scratch. But I still had to understand the code, tweak some thing.

I think of it as a tool to write a 100k line project in the time it takes to write a 10k line one. I think the potential will be fewer bugs and more productive programmers. That could mean less programmers. Equally likely is software can be much more complex, yet still manageable.

Even if AI replaces software engineers in 50 years, so what? People can move on to other fields of engineering.

Sometimes getting what you want quickly is a double edged sword. I used Google a lot in grad school, which brought up many relevant and helpful results. I switched to using books as much as possible. While slower, I learned lots of things I didn't know I didn't know, because I had to read through enough of the book to find what I needed. In the process, I learned things I would not have with a search engine.

I think this is a bit premature. AI is nowhere close to being able to replace an engineer in almost any role. If that isn't the case for you, take on more ambitious roles.

Of all the things I ever learned, Calculus shifted my world view the most, it is truly amazing. Math could be shifted to be more modern, maybe understanding statistics and maybe boolean logic. There is a common foundation.

Even computer programmers should know calculus, or at least trig. Sure, you can write some software without it, but you will be very limited without solid math.

Image processing, FFTs, machine learning will be beyond you without Calculus. Understanding the foundations will be unreachable.

I would spend every minute of that train ride studying and looking for new work or housing. Get earplugs (cheap) or noise cancelling headphones(not cheap), maybe both, and drop the excuses why you can't do those things. 5 hours a day is a lot of time, you need to find a way to make it productive until you can improve your situation.

I never had a commute like that, however I did used to have 1.5 hours a day of bus rides. I studied, it was effective.

That's cool, but its a really bad article. It seems very skeptical about the chip, based on the previous one. I suppose that's fair, but without any data, it is pure speculation.
