From a tether, getting slightly better than dial-up speeds, I get a (>) play indicator, presumably as the video is buffering, but it starts automatically, as expected of any video, when it buffers sufficiently to play without breaks or pauses.

All in all, it started playing 4 seconds after the page loaded.

The comparison here is not literal. It is an implied comparison of the iPhone to 'Android phones' made by your different companies.

In general, most of the latest and greatest Android phones sport larger displays and claim "4G" speeds, whatever that means for a given carrier. (Nexus One, Evo, Droid, Galaxy S, etc.)

Along the same sentiments here, is utilizing facebook login part of a larger strategy here? Curious as to why it's the only option for users to interact with the site.

The site provides no useful information for people who are entering information of suspect reliability.

Your user is faced with nothing of value other than your assurance (in repeated caps) that things should remain anonymous.

Why not give a better picture of what on earth is going on, otherwise it's just a form to submit some numbers, and an email.

The idea of theif floating data centers was well planned, and I'm assuming has not fallen completely off the table when factoring in their, already in place, shipping container server configurations.

This plant for water cooling has been in planning since 2009, at the time of purchase. So the flotilla of servers is entirely still possible. I would not be surprised to see it come out down the road.

Relatively certain Paul is not a co-founder for Blogger.

The initial rounds of Gilt were very limited on offerings (unlike the 6 or 12 designers they now carry daily) it was still high end though, so that initial entry point was indeed there for the early "designer" items, but as momentum gained on revenue/capital they snowballed to the current state.

To further pad this shortcoming in the early stages Gilt was invitation only, and had a lot of control of the influx of new customers to the site, which helped two-fold: promote the air of exclusivity and buffer for the smaller initial supplies/vendors from being out of stock too quickly. This also promotes traffic to the site as items, as they do today, sell out in popular sizes/prices fast, your users are logging in sooner/more frequently to grab a "deal".

Many "weekend" projects are starting out as experiments or self-educating exercises. Depending on the overall scope or drive of the developer these have potential to become apps or small revenue generating adventures.

Excited to see some mobile traction for HN, but posting the same link three times a day might be frowned upon.

Outsourcing is done for efficiency from a startup sense. Is it cost-cutting? Yes, because to begin with you are probably running tight margins and an expensive contractor can be done at the end of his contract, but an expensive in house designer (who might not be a developer) is benched after the work is completed. The cost of acquiring an inhouse designer solely for UX/UI does not make sense when you need all hands to develop your functional features. (In the case of a startup - this probably does not apply as much to Skype)

Comparing ANYSITE.com to facebook.com can be generally assumed to be hand-waving given the degree to which facebook stands as a massive outlier to any set of startups regardless of how similar the ideas may be.

Being able to get rid of the notification alerts that hinder any functional progress on whatever it is you were doing before the pop-up came along is pretty nice.

Also, the notifications from the lock screen information view is very nice to have. From a usability standpoint being able to triage a sms or email ping sound with one button rather than:

- button click to end sleep,

- swipe to unlock,

- another button click to enter sms or email,

- (maybe) one last button click to open a message.

Not the 'simplest cell phone', it does not exist, and the author of the article is bleeding with excess bias "With his über perfected skills in design..." - also, this article is from July 2010. Not sure on the relevance, this is just a conceptual art project from a design student.

If the screen presented in the lightbox when the page loads is critical enough that it needs to happen every time any user visits the homepage, then perhaps consider incorporating it onto the page itself as the first thing users see when they land on 'home'.

The forced interaction of requiring a user to make an additional click on the 'x' to move on to anywhere else on your site is frustrating. (Considering the banner is also ever-present this seems redundant)

Edit: Lightbox also showing up on your About page - it's a bit much at this point.

I think the point made in the answer was that the kind of passive social networking that Color is going to provide is a step beyond seeing a friend's facebook wall or twitter upload in the situation of a 'fire alarm' emergency.

These are going to be, for the most part, uploads by people unknown to you that will inform quickly and completely on a situation you cannot grasp as well alone.

In his September 11th example, perhaps you would see pictures from nearby of smoke and people moving away from it and gather enough information that you yourself will react as you will with a better sense of the world around you.

There was no skyscraper evasion skill mentioned in the answer. Really.

The resumé is very difficult to read and took a bit of a nosedive into the generic in its attempt to look unique with the crescent shaping.

Also, as a UX designer the design/layout/grammar(?) of the resumé is a head scratcher - lack of capitalization is no longer a style choice and just made everything harder to read, the most important bits of information: name and contact information are ... sideways.
