AI slop everywhere on social is terrible; I grant you that.

But AI tool in the hands of professionals that care about what they produce is becoming revolutionary. We are doing things we would never have done. Projects I never would have even started I am doing with new enthusiasm. I and the people I work with are using agents to learn new topics so fast. AI makes mistakes all the time, I found myself getting gaslit last week that refreshing my auth token would update my permissions (authentication and authorization are not the same thing)

If you are just looking at the output in images and garbage posts. Yes it is an abomination that must be stopped. But I cannot imagine a world without it now. And for the better.

Further, Public Sans was developed by the US govt under the first Trump administration and appears to be an excellent font. That seems to be a wise choice against TNR or Calibri on multiple angles.

Exactly, for the narrowly defined condition of running k8s on digital ocean with a managed control plane compared to Hetzner bare metal:

AWS and DigitalOcean = $559.36 monthly or Hetzner = $132.96 The cost of an engineer to set up and maintain a bare metal k8s cluster is going to far exceed the roughly $400 monthly savings.

If you run things yourself and can invest sweat equity, this makes some sense. But for any company with a payroll this does not math out.

I built a chicken coop, mostly as a hobby, and the eggs were a bonus. the 1,000 in materials for the structure and 25 bucks a month in food and bedding make that amortization table go out a couple of decades before you see ROI.

I joke that they are the most expensive organic eggs you can buy. ;)

In my field of IT consulting I find the opposite to be true. Developing a shared understanding of client challenges, getting leaders to make and follow through on decisions, and learning our way around customer ecosystems takes forever over Teams, slack, or email.

If we knew exactly what needed to be done and were just cranking code I see how solitude works. But the constant streams of low bandwidth meetings to make decisions is brutal.

My view has always been that buying gives me price stability. $1000 in mortgage + taxes + fees is only going to change by a hike in taxes but rent changes at the whim of the market. Here in my west coast city, the mortgage on a 4 bedroom house purchased 10 years ago is the same as a 2 bedroom apartment today.

A support desk/ticketing or sales pipeline service feels like the way to go here. Zendesk is a good low cost ticketing/support and Hubspot is marketing/sales. You could set it up so emails go through the service so you have the full history of the conversation in a single easy to read thread.

You could then attach an SOW contract to the ticket and update the contract as the client’s needs evolve.

Sure, not as catastrophic as getting prod root keys directly, but the breach was detected by an Okta customer that found a bad actor using session cookie data the was provided to Okta by their user in a support incident.

It is nearly certain that sometime in that 15 days a bunch of Okta customers got breached and are infiltrated now without their knowledge.

Who needs backup when you just rsync every 10 minutes?

This article is pretty sloppy. There are 2 different versions. The 7 minute release has vocals coming in just under 2 minutes. The 12 minute version has vocals kicking in just under 4 minutes. So the characterization that the intro "ebbs and flows for more than four minutes" is incorrect in all possible counts.

And in aggregate pop music has always been objectively terrible.

> If Wall Street wants Disney+ to cost less, the easiest way to do that without impacting subs or engagement is to delete the old stuff nobody watches.

This seems bananas on its face, are the execs at Disney thinking that it will save money to have fewer titles available to stream? The storage costs of titles that are never delivered is near zero.

I am starting to doubt that interest rates are the best lever against inflation.

Rising prices are supply not meeting demand. It feels like improving productivity would be an equally powerful tool with less human cost. Granted that is a harder thing to control quarter over quarter.

Consider this analysis that intetest rates may in some cases raise prices. https://economicsfromthetopdown.com/2023/02/04/do-high-inter...

And more links along that line from the pluralistic blog. https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/04/if-i-was-a-horse/#friedma...

Does anybody else hear talk of productivity in talk of inflation?

Yeah, we need to stop talking about the pandemic experience like it affected people in any way similarily. Tech worked their fingers to the bone— 50 hour weeks and isolatng heads down grind. Everyone made money but it crushed their souls. Hospitality and entertainment stayed home and starved. Essential workers went in every day under crushing conditions, fear and literal death.

We were all subject to one master. But under a different punishment.

ISPs are media companies. They do not want regular people publishing content or having a voice unless they can get their commission. The world would not have become just 5 websites with identical content if everybody had a server at their house.

For high load activities like builds and analytics, I use a server, either on the LAN or in the cloud. It gives me a better local performance experience and makes my jobs more reproducible for others to run. It for sure includes the added complexity of aws-cli scripts and ssh stuff though so YMMV.
