But that's the author's point, no? Icons are great when used as visual shortcuts, but the way they're implemented makes absolutely no sense to the point of being detracting. They're inconsistent from menu to menu, even in the same application, and don't even necessarily represent the action they're assigned to.

Pretty similar to how a lot of people in IT are using it:

- Generating boilerplate code for a process - saving time and then just customizing basic code after feeding it an idea and some basic requirements

- Troubleshooting - especially on systems I'm not familiar with - this often gets me 95% of the way to a solution. Obviously not just copying & pasting scripts it spits out, but it's been very good at figuring out some obscure linux issues, oracle config issues, even 3rd party integration software.

- Meal prepping - give it a list of ingredients and preferences and have it spit out a plan on how to portion it out, make each different meal roughly equal nutrition-wise, plan out when and how to cook each piece on a day to make it the most efficient, and even generate a shopping list. Output it into a nice table and the hardest part is done.

To everyone saying GCP will be gone - it generates over $8 billion in revenue per year and $400 million in profit. There's no chance they kill it any time soon.

Yes it posted heavy losses in the past, but any major infrastructure does, and obviously there is a major amount of potential - and they have around 10% of the total cloud market share, not insignificant by any means.

Yep - the fact that they listed this at the very top of the reasons above any kind of debt or spending numbers is pretty telling.

And they're not wrong

Homelessness isn't just caused by someone not having a home. There is a massive overlap of mental illness and substance abuse/addiction.

Just giving a homeless person a house will not solve the underlying problems that caused them to be homeless in the first place. There needs to be movement on multiple fronts - mental health, physical health, rehab, job training, personal finance, etc.

If the solution was easy, someone would have done it. The uncomfortable truth is when you have someone who is addicted to heroin or fentanyl or meth who isn't really participating in society like everyone else..sometimes there's not much you can do for them. Overcoming addiction is incredibly challenging even for people with means and support systems. Without those, sadly the numbers are abysmal.

There are adapters that let you use multiple and bypass that limit. Kensington has a few.

edit: for the record I think this limit is stupid and the biggest flaw of the Air. You're right that other than that, it's a damn near perfect daily driver.

We're allegedly going to see this in 2H '23. The 2 CU iGPU performance is about half of a 5600/5700g, so if we see an 8-12 CU model...it could completely replace the low-mid market for gpus.

It's movable of course, but this is still a downgrade from win10. My biggest peeve is that there seems to be no option anymore to not-condense icons, and you can't change the notification color (when an app flashes its icon).

I miss notifications on my work computer all the time because the flash color just doesn't stand out very much with my dark theme, and I can't even expand the width because...well it feels like they released an unfinished and unpolished product, again.

I hate that there's trade-offs that shouldn't need to exist with every new version.

Meanwhile my mac I don't think has ever lost functionality or customizability in the last..8ish years I've been using it as my daily driver.

Agreed - especially if I'm remoted into a box and not necessarily running a full-resolution screen. Bad UI design is magnified when you're at 1024x768.

It just doesn't make sense though for that reason. You can't sneak up on an engine. There's not a single engine out there that wouldn't recognize a mate in 2 moves. Unless the opponent blunders (which actually might be forced if the best defensive move is blocked).

What are they supposed to do? Demand ramped up significantly during covid - they needed staff to support it. They really had no choice but to hire that staff unless they wanted to have an undersupported platform with extremely long wait times for things like customer service or onboarding new restaurants. And with DD having a lot of competition (Uber Eats, Postmates, etc etc), someone else would pick up their slack and keep that business.

Yep - it's cool to hate tiktok, but it's chock full of excellent content. Yeah there's a lot of trash (just like the internet in general) but just swipe it away. Follow creators you like, and the algorithm honestly does a pretty good job about showing videos I don't hate.

10-15k per student per year beats out nearly any public school system in my state. They only _just_ raised the starting salaries to a bit under 40k.

edit: also - homeschooling/private teachers are much more efficient. An elementary school day takes more like 2 hours instead of 7, and there's basically zero after-hours work. Do you know any teachers who would give up public school to work 2-3 hours a day for 70k a year with no all-night grading/etc? Cause my bet is it's a huge majority of them.

Unfortunate is for the public schools though as there are now fewer teachers available to hire. There's teacher shortages in almost every state in the country.

Unfortunately hiring a private teacher to teach a small group of similarly-aged kids is reasonably affordable for families (less than half the price of private school), gives them a better education than public school (1:5 or 1:6 instead of 1:20), and takes a good qualified teacher out of the public school system (also while paying them more for working fewer hours).

We've always supported public schools but as a Florida resident, a private teacher is looking more and more like the better alternative.

the problem is that there is no "standard" usb-c cable. there's usb 3.0, usb 3.1, usb 3.2, usb 3.2 gen 2, usb-c thunderbolt, etc.

this is a major problem they need to figure out imo.

edit: or move to a new major version (usb 4.0) and make all new cables do all of that so if you get a 4.0 cable, you know you can use it for everything at once. i have no idea if this is currently the plan or not.

Ok - that makes sense. Obviously being on the dev side of things, I've never worked for a company that didn't have devs (and admins, devops, etc). Sounds like it definitely works in your case.

Because I have visual studio open, a solution loaded and organized with all the files I need for this sprint, SSMS with the servers all connected that I need, all my tabs open to see my jira board, support tickets, etc, a notepad doc i was using to take notes on a phone call, my ssh key loaded into pageant, and if my computer reboots, i'm going to forget half of that when it starts back up and lose 30+ minutes trying to get set up again the next day.

edit: i would legitimately quit a company that made me reboot every single night.

You're right..the lack of a touch screen is weird.

I do use mine for dev work/etc though (M1) and it's completely fine, even with only 8gb. I've never had any slowdowns or felt like it was holding me back.

I made a similar comment down below..there are many good laptops out there and it's insane what we take for granted now. High PPI super-bright screens, 8+ hour battery life, < 1" thick, < 2lbs, 2tb+ nvme ssd, etc.

I work in the microsoft stack but I use parallels on a MBP.

The M1 and M2 (and the benefits from them, like ridiculous battery life, low heat (enough so that you can run it totally fanless unless you're outside in the direct sun or something), and more importantly desktop-comparable speed for even heavy tasks like photo/video editing are really, really good. Honestly unless you're required to run windows, it makes a macbook kind of a no brainer right now, especially if you have other ios devices.
