Maybe it is, but I'm sure that in my case, they enjoy the extra time they spend communicating with me.

I think the point of his/her post is to show that from his/her perspective, the "connection" you get to friends and family via facebook isn't valuable. Although it may be to some, it isn't to everyone.

I have to agree, as someone that quit many years ago and hasn't looked back since. I still communicate with my long distance relatives, just not publicly. I use a combination of Google Hangouts, email, and just plain old phone calls to keep up to date with their lives. I share photos daily, via google photos, directly to those that I want to see them. And my family, who happen to use Facebook, know to send me photos using other methods.

This way, I only get information/photos that is meant for me to see. Not just every day stuff that's going on in everyone's life. To me, that's not important to my relationships, and is really a waste of my time that I can be using with my family in my house. The interactions I do share, though, is extremely important to me.

Some years back my wife and I decided to write a series of apps for toddlers that had zero ads, and absolutely no annoying sounds or music. We wanted to make something your kid could play quietly, without any help. The iPhone/iPad app version has been down for a while since we didn't profit enough off of it to continue paying the $100 annual apple developer fee. The Amazon version is still up if you want to see what we had in mind. It's called "Quiet Toddler Games for Tablets" when you search under Apps. I still like the concept, it's too bad that it didn't really pick up.

Ugh, I had to do this once on the sign up page at a small company I worked for about 10 years ago. Ever since then, I've been weary about beginning to fill out any forms unless I really, really want them to have the info. I still think its messed up to store user data that hasn't been submitted.

You know that, but my mom wouldn't know that. To the average customer they may assume that the Home version is the only version applicable to them. The Pro version looks like it's marketed as a business only solution. Bottom line is that it's more confusing than it should be.

I agree. A simple "Windows 10" with no subtitle would really make things easier for the consumer. Appending 'Home' on what is really a feature reduced version of Windows 10 doesn't seem to be in the best interest of the customer.

The comic has that one part a bit wrong. You're considered a cancer survivor as soon as you're diagnosed with cancer.

I do this all the time. Just right click the windows icon in the bottom LEFT corner. A context menu pops up with an option to shutdown, restart, log out, or sleep.

Hopefully they'll have an option to use a smaller start menu, like in the past.

They just announced that you can make your apps run in a window, instead of full screen.

I think it's wonderful that it's uncommon for there to be a gap in salaries based on gender. This is something I've paid close attention to over the past 8 years. My wife and I are both software developers with roughly the same level of experience and expertise. So far it seems like the person with the highest salary is usually the one that most recently changed jobs, since negotiating a new salary is much easier then negotiating a large raise.

I agree that Congress sucks, but their website shows they enacted 79 whole laws in 2013. These include the "Small Airplane Revitalization Act of 2013" and the "Freedom to Fish Act".

The subtitles files you can find online are formatted with timestamps to allow the video player to sync the text with the video, so for this purpose it makes perfect sense. Maybe set top boxes could make use of subtitles to allow users to search for a certain point in a video.

I saw the headline "Squishy Earth" and clicked on it, hoping (but not expecting) to actually be presented with an interactive squishy earth. I was pleasantly surprised.

I disagree with your assumption that sex slaves aren't by definition 'slaves' because they aren't legally owned. They are bought and sold (from what I've learned at the movies) so to me they are actual slaves.

I absolutely agree with this article. I had never done any programming before college (6 years ago). On the first day of my freshmen year I began learning HTML. It was completely new to me at the time. After graduating I'd noticed that my coworkers 1.5 times my age who had been programming since they were in middle school were frequently coming to me for help.

The reason, I believe, is that our industry is constantly evolving. Once you've learned the basic concepts of programming, the only thing left to do is to keep up with new technologies as they come.

Worked great for me until I switched tabs back to HN to read comments. My screens instantly went black while my video card driver thew up all over my desk.
