IMO you need two lists: "Popular Lately" which is what this list is now, and ALSO "Trending" which is sorted by some measure of recent growth.
That way up and coming stuff doesn't have to dethrone github/slack/etc in order to get seen.

Preferences -> Messages & Media -> Display Options -> "Display information about who is currently typing a message"
When I see things like this, I always make a mental note never to patronize the business (or in the case of a city/state, never to visit).
Maybe the small effect of voting with my wallet would be more likely to be noticed if I sent a note: "Hi there, because of $ACTION_I_DISAGREE_WITH, I've decided not to patronize your business anymore"
