When you say "we" are on track to destroy this world .it seems to me that you are denying the geological record that shows climate change is a given.our weather systems and our planets atmospheric chemistry has never been stable. I'm not going to drop links attempting to argue my point as you seem to have made up your mind. I will say I'm concerned about the planets rapidly changing atmospheric chemistry but, according to the " accepted " geological record it has changed so many times in 4.6 billion years that for me to take the current " Sky is falling because we broke it" talking points is just a non starter. You should come to southern California. Loads of poor ppl living on the beach. Generation after generation. I'm not judging because that's my roots. Even in exclusive neighborhoods the poor, even dirt poor, outnumber the top of the food chain by dozens to one. Living close to the beach without an insurance company backing you is a normal thing here

The problem is showing a direct correlation between disasters and climate change. I'm in the boat with ppl who think this stuff may be caused by human activity but I think that the science is not exactly clear on this. Other metals like the ones you named have an oxidation problem over time. Gold does not have that problem and contacts will wear thru thier plating by mechanical usage . Gold does not oxidize in the normal earth atmosphere. That's why you can see ancient gold in for instance : Egyptian relics that still shine - no oxidation.. It's nearly a perfect electrical conductor. There are better ( for the pedantic chemists here) But gold plated connectors are used by industry for reliability

Old electronic equipment is the good stuff. The older it is- the better. The manufacturers have now created methods to use less gold. Equipment from the 60s is coveted. Mainframes and old giant mechanical printers have lots of gold in them. Telcom equipment, Rf equipment same thing- lots of easily accessible Noble metals. Today's scrap electronics have much less recovery value but it's still profitable, even in California. If you follow the correct formulas( developed in the 1800s and not a secret) the waste products from this process are not classified as hazardous. Yes it takes time for your reactions to complete but, it's not like you have to babysit this stuff. All the waste is converted into non hazardous elements easily thru cheap effective chemical reactions. I've said too much already but, if anyone can get ahold of a large quantity of cellphones or better yet older electronics from the past century I'd be glad to help you recover your gold thru environmentally legal methods that aren't a secret but are just not well known. Simple fact, Mercury does not dissolve gold. It amalgamates with certain metals making them easier to collect in one mass rather than having tiny bits all over the place. Mercury use has very little to do with gold mining or recovery today. Repeat: I said it's used very little- not that it is never used. Its much easier and more economical to just use aqua regia to get the gold away from the base metals. Gold recovery from electronics is done in semi- laboratory conditions and the gold is refined using the same conditions which are a far cry from some guy in the hills digging up dirt and spilling his waste into a mountain stream. Modern refiners shun Hg. It's hard to clean up the waste to acceptable levels. That's a big deal nowadays. No one wants to poison the environment. Acid based extraction techniques are much cleaner,easier and more environmentally friendly. Just like everything else- it comes down to profits and it's just more profitable to use acids instead of Mercury. Hell it's even more profitable to use cyanide to extract the gold. Gold is recovered from modern electronic equipment by many people in the USA in a profitable and environmentally clean way. You don't hear much about it due to the people doing it don't want to advertise thier success. Modern electronics have much less gold or other valuable metals in them nowadays but wherever you see an electronics recycling event there are modern day gold miners. The key word here is " Gold refining"

Those were heady days. My wife worked there at that time . One day she told me we were millionaires, I blew it off. Depending upon how you define " very comfy" You can lease beachfront property for much less than a thousand per month and that is for a mansion Including domestic help. I will say that if you need medical care above what a clinic can provide you are better off in the states . However dental is awesome here and I've heard a few us plans cover dental in Mexican clinics. Internet is available as well as data plans that are cheaper than the states depending on where you are. Utilities are so much cheaper and if you need to go to the pharmacy for meds there is NO cheaper place to get the same meds. Yes you pay cash but it's like 1/10th the price. Yes it's label is not printed in English but it's the same compound. The Mexican government cares for and protects it's fisheries in ways the USA never did so the seafood there is much much higher quality. We get shrimp, live off the fisherman's boat for 10 bucks a kilo!!! Yes there still is some issues regarding the drinking water ( in some places) but the hn crowd probably is used to drinking out of bottles instead of a tap. There are some places the water is better quality than the usa- I'm funny about water quality and I drink the water there in some places and others I won't. There is still a huge divide between the haves and have nots . The people I know there are honorable. One thing you may have to realize is that if you cross an international border the US Constitution does not apply- lots of ppl forget this. Weed and other drugs are not yet legal and while can be overlooked for$$ If you go looking for trouble, you will find it.

Once you get away from the hustle and bustle of the border towns, Mexico is the land of sun and flavor. I've got family that live like Kings off thier civil service pension in oceanfront villas just a few short miles south of here. There were scary stories about the narco related violence all over the news a while ago and I'm sure it's still happening but in my experience if you don't go looking for trouble you don't find it. I understand why the locals want to leave for better opportunities. I also understand why the locals on this side of the border head south- for better opportunities. Yes,Mexico has some issues Just like everywhere else But the housing is cheaper and sometimes even better than what you get in southern California. Beer is cheaper (Coronas are about 10$ a case) People are friendlier and really have a honorable culture compared to where I live now. Food prices are basically comparable in the cities with all your favorite brands ( produce is better than USA imho) Most places have less regulation regarding building codes and zoning although I understand this cuts both ways but basically if you get the land( they do 99yr leases instead of ownership unless you are a citizen) If you get the land- you can build to your hearts content. There is a huge population of usa people there already and from countries far and wide and the locals for the most part embrace development . I could go on and on

What happens to the PTO at the rollover date? Or if an employee accrues more PTO time than the employer will pay. I'm not being caustic here im just wondering what happens to those funds?

Maintenance guy here. I work at apartment complexes and get calls around once a week during winter and spring about birds( mostly doves and hummingbirds) that are bashing themselves repeatedly on residents upper story windows. It's sad because the birds just need to turn around and fly lower to escape but they seem unable to do that. They are transfixed on the window itself. The only solution I've been able to come up with is to open the window from inside( not always possible) or just allow nature to take it's course. I'd like to help these creatures but climbing a ladder three stories up is not acceptable to me. I hesitate to say that it's nature's way of culling out the dumb ones. We make our own olives here in southern California. It's very easy although picking them is labor intensive. It's very satisfying to make delicious food from things growing on trees and doesn't take a long time or a lot of space
