The person driving the Google's developer relations is Vic Gundotra who was responsible for Microsoft developer relations and development tools for close to 10+ years(I think from 96-06). He is using all the strategies that worked for Microsoft plus new ideas which would never have been possible at Microsoft due its closed nature.

Hard to make it happen politically. India tried something similar, to get gas from Iran in a pipeline. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran%E2%80%93Pakistan%E2%80%93I... The project has been gestating for the last 20 years with no real movement in the progress meter. And similar to what happened with the pipeline, I expect the US to spring roadblocks all over the place. Even if it cannot convince every country, it will convince enough to ensure gaps in the rail line undermining its usefulness.

The new IBM follows the business model you just mentioned though they do not venture outside technology. They no longer invest in building anything ground up. They buy a reasonably successful technologies ( Lotus, Rational, etc) and use an army of salespeople to upsell the new technologies.

The reason IBM does not get outside the technology sector is because the profit margins are one of the highest when it comes to software. They have sold most of their non-software business's in recent years: They dumped the loss making Thinkpad for a hefty sum to Lenovo, got rid of most of their semiconductor business and are a software sales company today. I guess the same reason will apply to MS for not getting into any non technology sector.

I nap for about 20 minutes at about an hour after lunch(usually 1 to 1:30 PM). If I had a 6 hour sleep cycle, I nap for about 40 minutes. I definitely can think and program better after the nap. I nap in my car. I drive out to a Publix lot and do it. I have tinted windows, so people seem not to realize I am napping in it. My real trouble is waking up early. In my office, my CEO shows up at 6 AM and everyone else shows up an hour after that. So I have trouble getting up at 7:30 but I am working on it.
