examine this by economic sectors: primary - extracting products from the earth this sector has seen consolidation (farming) and has been chasing lower and lower returns with higher input costs (see gas fracking for example) secondary - manufacturing offshored tertiary - services offshored / massive incumbents from decades of M&A who stifle competition. Quaternary - intellectual massive cuts to basic science research, libraries, etc..
