I have no need for the service, was just curious about the details.

Afaik: Technically it isn't "public" as public is a classification in itself (as in public domain). But that's just nibbling on the details.

For me i has always been "iterator variable" or something similar, j being the logical next iterator variable. Then again I haven't done this (code) for very long.
