I don't think that is deep enough for the mac pro to be stable front-to-back-wise, and it also only holds 60lb which is a little weak for a 40lb machine. Can't imagine it would last long if ever rolled around on carpet.

The workers would be creating a non compete for their own positions, and enforcing it against amazon hiring the scabs. Their right to do so is questionable, just as normal non-competes are, but we'll see how legal judgement works out I suppose.

They got cash while it was easy and certain. Accumulating it slowly would be as uncertain as their employment and expenses, and the option of borrowing later when they really need it may not be available. I can see how it might have been a logical choice for them.
