It could be if that yields more profit in the end.

For example,

It costs the company 10 dollars, and that 100 out of 110 people will purchase the upgrade for $20. That is $100 profit. Maybe the company also finds that 80 of those 110 people would also buy the same upgrade for $150 and yields like $11,200 in profit.

So it makes sense for the company, the persons running it, and the investors in the company to have the markup as high as it will maximize their profits.

Sorry, to me I interpret markup to be assumed as double the cost but would not consider that "near" cost.

Without going through everything with a fine tooth comb I imagine some of the money may have been spent upgrading the electric grid to support the chargers.

Fast chargers as I understand are more taxing to the electric grid and so are not simply able to be placed just anywhere there is electricity. Additionally a source paper in the govtech.com article also emphasizes looking at coverage rather than number of chargers. That is wanting to have chargers spread out such a way that people can complete longer trips.

Your scenario here makes even less sense because most cars do not come with a trailer hitch (trucks on other hand...), you're buying another thing (which lowers that this is supposed to be an "affordable" EV), you have to renew registration for the trailer, and have a place on top of your vehicle to store it.

A truck bed is nice to have sometimes. You can quickly throw things in it (like plywood, a new large flat screen, bicycles, fishing gear, a dead deer, etc). You don't have to hookup a trailer or fiddle with wiggling things between doors and so forth.

Gambling is also sometimes considered a tax on the poor. But my point is it can be easier to levy a vice tax than raise income taxes for example.

AND with vices people will do them regardless so maybe some social good is better than no good coming from it.

Sure but there are cases where it just does not make sense.

Case in point, regular sized everyday cars.

There might be viable applications for semi-trucks that provide an economical advantage over batteries. There might be good use cases related to energy storage & transportation, aviation, and water craft. There is also likely other industrial applications I'm not familiar with.

God Honda will not quit on Hydrogen.

290 miles, I could be mistaken but are not many pure battery cars already within that range?

Maybe there is some viable applications for space like potential rocket refueling?

For me at least reducing the risk of fire or explosion really nice. Sodium is obviously very accessable but not sure on other common material constraints.

Forcing kids to learn to spell when they have learning difficulties (eg dyslexia) doesn't usually go well either it's just causing suffering for the kid.

I greatly valued the tutoring that I received for that (personally wish it had not been cut short). I was somewhat fortunate and received one-on-one tutoring in a secluded room.

They provided me with clearer definition of rules (instead of sayings like "i before e...", proper phonetics, and a history of where English came from.

That said, there's research into trying to determine which children with Dyslexia should receive specialized treatment as a segment just cannot learn to read at all.

I was not trying to imply that it was not. Just observing that when money is on the table there appears little incentive in some cases to build a good product.

Or to follow good engineering practices because the founders & investors already made money without it.

Just an observation though:

There seems to be a world in software where "it works" well enough to grow a large user base to achieve a a large valuation and then dip out is also a viable option.

Growing/evolving the code does not matter because the product no longer matters after the founders have made a large sum of money.
