I always carry cash. I'm surprised when people don't. Came in handy when the hurricane hit, gas stations only took cash. Cash is also good for negotiation.

I'm sort of with you with housing and education but where I'm in violent disagreement is health. Some are born with a terrible hand and there's little that they can do, on their own, to resolve those issues. It's unacceptable to lose everything for health treatments. People have options with school and housing. People can put forth effort to improve their situation. With health, you can't just get up and move somewhere else to be healthy.

How is this even validated or profitable? Companies ask me for various information all the time and I usually just make it up or use an old #, old zip code, etc. Once they have the data, then how do they make money?

I don't know the real reason but for myself, I actually uninstalled Spotify after I found out about the P2P feature. There was a noticeable lag when I would play online console games and had Spotify open on a PC or laptop. It was never really an advertised feature and it kind of pissed me off that they would do that without a clear notification. Took me a bit to troubleshoot as well. I'm sure it was in the user agreement but come on, who reads that.

I disagree. A share is worth a portion of the business. That is a defined unit. The share price is what people will pay for a share of the piece of company. Baked into the price is the underlying assets (real value) in addition to the fuzzy speculation piece.

The share prices can be analyzed by looking at the financial reports. True value can be assessed by looking at assets minus liability, debts, dividend payment, etc.

This value per share then is compared to the buying price. There is a lot of speculation built into the price now a days. An investor does not have to buy at this real value + speculation price, the investor can sit it out. People are willing to pay for a share of this company, a non-defined amount, it's the only way to continuously offer a share of the company for sale.

Race baiting comment. Context is key. The article advocates equality and you cherry picked a wikipedia section of a historical and clearly wrong assumption. Look over the wiki and try to find something where Benjamin Rush does not advocate equality, then you can shoot your shot.

For me it's about the job but I'm sure everyone has their own reasons. I'm secure and don't have to struggle. I apply for jobs and don't hear back, interview and don't get the job, etc. I'd be willing to move somewhere new if I knew I had a job lined up. While savings is good, it's stressful and scary to have no income. It's like holding your breath and eventually panic sets in. Doesn't feel good. I'd love to move to a bunch of different cities but many of those places don't seem to have jobs that fit my background. I'd jump to a new career but not sure I could float the expenses while also saving for the future.

Acids? Like stronger acids than the stomach acid already inside of the human body? I doubt that considering stomach acid damages teeth. Nobody would have teeth left.

Large protein consumption? Like what many many people do for health reasons, keto, body builders, etc? People in prime health condition?

And what about fructose malabsorption with certain fruits and vegatables? Some people can't eat certain things otherwise it will make them sick due to this illness.

Not a developer but the post mentions an emulator being available, why not use that? If there's a bug, submit a bug report ?

Can't say I have many professional connections either, not a big fan of "networking" in general. However, the people I do consider connections are those from college and those from former groups at previous jobs. Maybe someone from another group, but it's rare. My career jobs have lasted a few years (4-6) so that has provided time to develop these relationships. I suppose it would be much more difficult in the gig economy to establish these relationships. I try to offer value or different perspectives at my jobs that nobody else can. Work hard, deliver, and if I can't... let them know ahead of time and what help is needed. I try to let my work network for me rather than being active about it. Do you have any projects you've worked on? Might be a good source of networking connections, keep up with former coworkers, coffee, lunch, referrals, etc.

What do you mean by that?

Yeah, that's what I already do-do but your suggestion doesn't help with any of the situations mentioned in the linked post. The post describes interactions that are non-work related between people.

Work-wise, I have my "go-to" people when I need something done. I don't care what their gender is, I just know they've performed well in the past and get it done in time to help me make my deliverable date. Once a person demonstrates reliable performance of getting the right answer, I don't need to go to others. How does that help solve the problems mentioned in the post? Not really clear to me.

As a man, I'm clueless on how to help. I certainly don't make any comments of similar nature or perform actions described in the stories.

However, if I were to observe such an event happening, I'd be frozen. One half of me thinks, the woman is an individual and can stand up for herself. If she's uncomfortable, she'll say or do something. She's of equal standing.

The other half of me, I feel like I should say something. But by doing so, that asserts my male patriarchy views, protecting women from the danger. Women wouldn't be considered an equal in this scenario.

Good in theory but difficult in practice. I only know what I know because I read about it, was lucky to be exposed to retirement planning, everyone else? Not so lucky.

Terrible spot to be in, hoping I will avoid it with a traveling retirement plan (401k). How do other 1st world countries manage elderly workers/people that should no longer work? SS is an option and I don't believe it will go bankrupt, wages of about 125K contribute to SS, anything larger does not. Just have to adjust that limit to keep it where it needs to be. So that helps a little bit.

They could be certainly correlated but why would you assume that growth automatically means an equal (or slightly higher in this case) ridership? After all, the out of towners all didn't take the bus there. Most public transportation I've experienced (subways, buses, trollies, local trains, etc) have a lower-band economic class, for reasons that I could only assume and is an entirely different topic. These lower economic classes aren't pushing the growth of Seattle's population. If Seattle is getting the middle and upper classes to take the bus then they very-well deserve kudos.

What did they expect from the survey? Most American work places are not known for cultural or social open-ness, whether for good or bad. Of course the data will not reflect people engaging in any extra communication other than base minimum. I've been struggling with the idea over my career but I feel I've had most success when I did not socialize with coworkers other than for business. It's unfortunate because we see each other so much out of our lives but it seems socialization impedes career growth.

That's the way I was looking at it. I think a lot of it comes from people not being comfortable with silence so they'll just mention something they notice. When it's silent we are stuck with our own thoughts, some don't really like that!

Makes sense, my default is not to ask about it. I've seen very few people with eye patches in my life and I never asked.

It kind of relates to what one of my friends recently observed and experienced, someone asked them what race they are. She's light skinned but black. The person asking went through a few different combinations latino, white-black mix, etc and finally asked black and she got really angry. From my 3rd person perspective, I don't think the intent was to cause an issue but to relate to my friend. It's unfortunate because I don't see a maleficent intent, an unintended negative experience. This event is a small example of what I see on a overall change in society. Now everyone is walking around on pins and needles, afraid to make a social interaction for fear of making someone angry. Further isolation. Less tolerant to mistakes. I don't see this as a good thing. Boring. Uncreative. Polished. Unable to express an idea or question for fear of offending someone.

Most of the time I get stuck in a do-loop and the person is gone before I have a chance to make a decision. That's probably a good thing, looking at it from a cost/benefit analysis there is no way anyone should ask such a thing. But I also don't want to pretend this obvious thing doesn't exist because it's an elephant in the room! What if the said person expects me to comment on it? What if the person thinks that other people avoid them due to this non-typical characteristic? I certainly don't want to contribute to that either! I have no idea how to approach these things...

My main goal is to treat them like anyone else and I saw someone with a broken leg I'd ask. I forget the comedian but they cover the topic of handicapped people feeling left out because they don't get commented on, they want to feel equal. I think it might have been Carlos Mencia (yeah, yeah, I know, dude steals jokes) but the point stands - if we want to treat people equal aren't we obligated to ask?

Thanks for asking this. I often read articles saying such things but do not provide any data or how they came to the conclusion. It makes absolutely no sense to say this without the data to back it up.

This certainly seems to be the trend in America today. Looking at history, clearly we are moving toward the individual being the pinnacle of importance. Gone are the days of family, unity, knowing neighbors, big social gatherings. Even interactions with others today are not as community-oriented, barely anyone knows their neighbors, people rarely communicate in public scenarios (subways), everyone wants their own sovereignty without having to lend a helping hand. I can only mention these opinions from things I've read on the past and my own experiences but it seems that the individual is the importance in today's society. Not sure if that's a good thing either. The individual must be precise and unfailing if there is no safety net. A group can better handle risk and mitigate negative consequences. The only benefit I see from focusing more on the individual is freedom. Freedom at what cost?
