Not sure what's the case at Google, but when I was managing people at a Fortune 500 company, I was guided by HR to be especially careful if I need to fire a women or a minority employee - put them on PIP, document everything very carefully, etc. - because of much higher perceived risk of a wrongful termination suit.

Does anyone know of a good way to check whether my Mac is infected with this (or any other) malware programs? I rarely, if ever, download unknown programs, and my OS is always up-to-date, but still...

Would appreciate for any pointers.

I'm wondering why no one discusses that Q3 was the Quarter right before new Apple Watch introduction, and Apple owns a majority share in the market? Of course people were waiting to buy a new device. Q4/Q1 will be more relevant.

In this case, money you should pay for bread at a supermarket can be considered a "paywall and discrimination against the poor".

There could be couple of reasons why instinctively we think about paying for bread as a mutually beneficial exchange of goods for money, and about paying for internet articles as a "paywall that discriminates the poor":

(a) Articles used to be free, and many (in other publications) are still free.

(b) There is a very little incremental cost to WSJ if a single article will be read for free by someone, as opposed to the supermarket example above where an incremental loaf of bread has a very real economic cost.

But that doesn't change the fact the WSJ article is a real good that cost a lot of money to produce and therefore should be paid for.

That 1/50 failure rate is debatable, and depends on your definition.

For example, Soviet/Russian manned flight, "Soyuz", had 131 flights (123 Soyuz + 2 Voskhod + 6 Vostok) [1][2] and 2 accidents, resulted in death of 4 astronauts (1 + 3).[3]

However, both of these accidents occurred before 1972, and both were highly experimental flights. Komarov's was the VERY FIRST flight of Soyuz, and before Soyuz 11 accident, they were descending without space suits, as the space inside the cabin was so tiny.

So you can also say that there were 2 accidents in the first 10 Soyuz flights - they were still finalizing the technology - and no accidents in the remaining 113.

In addition, both of these accidents occurred during the landing, so there was NO accidents during manned-space take-off in Russian/Soviet flights.

I also don't want to sound arrogant, but I would like to address this point:

Text editor (vim/emacs/sublime/Atom, etc.): For the Go newbie is too complex

Text editor may be hard(?) to setup for a go newbie, although I do not personally agree with this statement, but at least local shell + text editor + command line compiler is a well known and understood stack. A newbie having a problem with it can always ask for help - coworkers, friends, online, etc., and solution is always within her control.

Replacing this stack with a web-based one will change a set of known problems into a set of unknown problems, outside of anybody's control, except for the b3log and their team. And their software is fresh and untested, and surely contains a lot of bugs, as any new code.

I'm not sure that sounds like a good value proposition - not to me.

Indeed, you are bringing very interesting points:

- vertical integration (and tighter control over quality / schedules) for technology companies, and

- size/scale as an advantage in Marketplace.

We have seeing both of these in play, not just with Samsung: Apple is designing their own CPUs, and you can argue they leverage their size to help iTunes and Apple Pay businesses.

Still, there are counterexamples: NVIDIA (and many other successful companies) are fabless, and AMD divested their fabs (by splitting into AMD and Global Foundries).

What HP seem to be spinning off is their consulting arm and the enterprise hardware businesses, where vertical integration/size doesn't matter that much.

I predict we will see more of this.

There was a reason for conglomerates in 1960-70s: shortage of capital meant that cross-subsidizing one division by another was the only viable way to finance growth. These days are long over.

Nowadays, it makes much more sense to operate unrelated businesses as completely independent companies, with different set of managers and investors.
