It's absolutely routine for hobby and artisan turners and carvers, though. In between the first turn and the second turn, you can air dry, kiln dry, and other techniques. With air drying, you actually want to slow the drying so that it happens more evenly. Otherwise, the outside of a vessel dries faster than the inside, which splits the wood. In general, packing a vessel inside and out with wood shavings helps even the process.
I've also had great results using silica gel on smaller items, although it can be hard to scale it to larger vessels. Much faster drying than air alone, with greatly reduced distortion and cracking.

You may be having a problem with resolving DOI's through an institutional link resolver, or with a browser plugin that's sending your DOI links through the link resolver.

Email search is poor. It's not important enough to me to switch, but it's almost surprising when a search returns the emails I'm looking for.
Calendar is too separate from email, especially in the apps. I can't accept invites from other services, or if I do, they don't show up in Calendar. I forget, because I gave up on using it within days.
Pass is terrific, so far. Transition to it was easy- much better than some commercial offerings that have been around a lot longer. Password generation options are top notch.

yes, I know safety-critical systems are different. I also expect that the floppy-disk issue is just the easiest problem to explain of a long chain of terrible legacy lock-ins. However, if they're literally holding their breath every morning when it's time to IPL the system off a floppy...that part sounds solvable.
They have hundreds of patents, though. One key patent - which IIRC is on the verge of expiration - does not mean that it's possible to build a saw that doesn't infringe one or more of the others.
I have two theories here, and I don't know which I believe more. It's probably a combination of both:
1) Tesla executed a remarkable 0->1 strategy, working from the Roadster (high-end luxury price, low volume) to the S (high-end luxury price, moderate volume) to the Y and 3 (low-end luxury price, high volume), creating an apparently-successful car company that only sold luxury-price vehicles. Detroit interpreted that as "everybody is ready to spend low-end luxury money for electric cars." In fact, there's still a limited number of people who can spend luxury money for cars, and Detroit is winning those back from Tesla. That's not the same thing as "building cars for people who can only spend 25K or less for a car."
2) Detroit really only builds huge cars, leading Americans who don't want huge cars to buy imports or (recently) Teslas. These buyers have greater than random overlap with the set of likely electric car buyers. Detroit tries to build huge electric cars, but those buyers tend not to want huge cars, creating bad market fit.
It's problematic as heck for a regulation to require a feature that's comprehensively patented by a single vendor, even when it's as important an innovation as the SawStop blade brake.
Other SawStop thoughts:
- Beyond the instant-stop thing - which is spectacular and really works - SawStop's are very well-made saws with solid tables, nice fences, and decent vacuum accessories; IMO, much higher quality manufacture across the board in general than a lot of competing models with similar specs.
- The brake works once, and then you have to replace the component for <$200. Much cheaper than a new thumb.
- Green wood can be wet enough to trigger the brake. You can disable the brake to cut green wood, but what if you don't? What if you cut dry wood with the brake disabled? A safety control like that is great if you know it's always on. Once you have to remember to check before every cut...it's in the same realm as planning and executing every cut carefully.

I've been working exclusively on MBPro's, no external screen, for going on 10 years.
There are issues, usually related to screen sharing from people using giant monitors. Some developer applications assume you're on a huge monitor. Not every sidecar can be hidden, not every grid has resizable columns.
In the end, though, I would never switch from leaning back on a couch to leaning forward at a desk.

Since this is the second time I've mentioned Bowker, let me just say that I do not and have never worked for them or with them, although I did meet with their reps several times when I worked in a different part of digital publishing. It's just that they're inescapable when you're talking about ISBNs.

DOI's are far, far more centralized in that CrossRef issues many orders of magnitude more DOI's than all of the others.
The cite-and-be-cited-by use case for scholarly articles is way more compelling than any other use case devised for DOI's.

There are regional ISBN agencies. The US agency, Bowker, assigns ISBN prefixes by publisher, and publishers assign within their prefix as they please. They're supposed to use one ISBN per edition and format, but many publishers use ISBN as a kind of SKU so you can't 100% count on that.
If that sounds sloppy...I went to publishing conferences fairly regularly from the late 90's into the teens, and I never saw a program that didn't have at least one session or panel titled something like "Publishers must improve their metadata practices."

A lot of these responses seem to think that Harvard is better to go to because the education is better there, which is explicitly if lightly addressed in the article.
The article's thesis is that the benefit of going to Harvard is mostly derived from just from having gone to Harvard irrespective of the education itself. That could accrue just from the credential, or from the enormous and powerful social and support networks that graduates benefit from.
