In the end, for me personally, I give people respect for their roles and the benefit of the doubt that they're in the position for the right reasons. But when I don't get that kind of thing in return then it just pisses me off. What I realized along the way is that I don't want to be in charge of things like this, it's simply not for me, at the very least it isn't on that team. Maybe that will change with the right people but the whole thing soured me on management in general and I will avoid it like the plague.

I'm pretty bitter about it all still, but it's a combination of a lot of things beyond this particular bit I shared. All I can say is I'm glad I am no longer in that role, it was slowly killing me.

The problem I personally ran into as a one person IT department was that the VP of marketing had more power over me, as a manager, and that meant more to my supervisor (the CEO) than me fighting to do things as correctly as possible. I was seen as a roadblock or speed bump. So, they may not decide on DKIM and SPF, but if marketing isn’t happy then their negativity could cause push back that forces changes that may technically not be good for the company.

I’ve abandoned that role and have gone back to an IC role and I’m much happier for it.

I usually just have mine in the Safari downloads folder. Then use Files to open them.

If you’re on Linux, using iCloud to add files there should be easy enough as well. Then I just added them as I needed them. I’m on a Mac though so it’s a bit easier.

Apple Books is actually pretty good if you have epub. I have used it a fair bit in the past (I now use a Kobo, or physical books primarily). But Apple Books was the best I found on iOS. There were some others that were pretty good but they seem to be unmaintained and/or do some weird things that I didn't particularly like so I went back to Apple Books.

Been on an iPhone since the original and mostly until maybe the XS got a new model every other year, since the XS I've been on a 4-5 year cycle, with a 14 Pro to replace my XS.

I also have a Pixel 7 that I use primarily as a home phone stuck on a cheap very few minutes pre-paid plan. I've used it at home on wifi a number of times just to try it out. I think it's... fine? App quality is definitely a negative as I find as a Mac user that some of my favorite developers are better at making iOS apps, or their app is simply not available on Android at all and the alternatives are not nearly as good.

If not for that I probably wouldn't care from a usability perspective, but I still think Apple's focus on privacy and security tend to win out overall. That said, I now carry around a camera with me 90% of the time so I suspect I will be downgrading to a standard iPhone when I upgrade next if the camera carry continues. When I need super pocketable, I use a Ricoh GR, when I need small but great a Fujifilm X100VI, and when I want to go big I have a Sony a7cr full frame camera (still a small camera but FF lenses are much larger than APSC lenses)

Do Teslas even have functional rear view mirrors? I thought they did everything with cameras on the dash and only had as much shitty rear view mirror as necessary to not violate the law necessitating there be a rear view mirror.

I started reading a great deal more at the start of the pandemic. I've kept it going since and it has been a real boon. I also switched back to physical books because I actually own them..

I have my own beef with 1Password, but having used both Bitwarden and 1Password, I still find 1Password to be the better UX and more secure solution. Bitwarden is also worse at filling with their browser extension, rather significantly. That said, 1Password's Safari support with multiple profiles is... frustrating... at best.

Yea, maybe at some point I'll get back out there and hike the Minong trail where all the beavers are. I'm really glad we didn't this last time though, we got a TON of rain. I'm guessing the Minong would've been incredibly difficult to navigate, as the other areas were really bad.

This was a my favorite book last year. Friend and I went on a hike across Isle Royale and while we skipped the area that is inhabited by beavers they had the book at the gift shop and it sounded pretty interesting.

REALLY good book and made me think very differently about beavers. Highly recommend it!

Edit: The section of the book dedicated to European beavers is much smaller than the American counterpart, in case that matters. I do think the coverage was good on both sides though.

In tablet mode, iPad OS. Touch being the primary operation. Basically just as we see it now.

In a pseudo desktop mode, macOS, where you get the power of a laptop in a smaller form factor. You can optionally try to use this in touch mode in a pinch but it's not necessarily designed for it.

The win would be seamless switching. Including apps... if I have photoshop open on iPad, dock, convert to Photoshop for Mac. I.e. you "dock" your iPad and it converts to a more Mac-like experience. Undock, you get the iPad experience.

To me, this would be ideal. I don't generally _need_ a laptop for personal use, so this would be a serious boon for me as I use my iPad all the time in the evening for simple consumption, but I also have a MacBook over here that gets used a few times a week, which is a costly device for how little it gets used.

There are a few big caveats that I looked at when I recently upgraded my iPad.

Screen. The Pro screens are better. How much that matters is up to you. Given I am into photography and wanted to have the nicer screen this mattered to me. You can also get the nano-textured glass on the Pro but I don't believe you can on the others. This is a super pricey option though.

Processor. The Pro has M4, Air has M3.

USB-C port differences. I believe the Pro line have faster USB-C transfer speeds. Not sure if this has changed but it used to be a thing.

I skipped the Apple Pencil this time around, I just didn't use it enough with my previous iPad Pro to justify getting it again. I've had it for two months, so far I am happy with the decision.

There are probably others, so your point is certainly valid, that it is a pain to find the legitimate differences that might matter without digging into the specs.

I work as a software engineer in the non-profit sector, within education. It's going to be a wild ride as to whether I have a job or not in a year. We are (almost) entirely dependent on grants. The money we get that isn't from grants is tiny (like less than 1% of our total budget). We applied for a few government grants recently and it sounds to me like they are definitely not something we will be getting now so it's back to the private foundations we have to go to for funding. With all the mixups happening it's going to be interesting to see how private foundations pivot, will non-profits like ours see big grants or will we die because other areas are more important?

On top of that, I am no expert top of the job market software engineer. If I lose this job I am going to be competing against people significantly better than me because so many others have (or will) be losing their jobs. Basically, this is the potential beginning of the end of my career.

Thankfully, I think I'm okay through this year, and probably next... but after that, completely a mystery. And that's only because we have agreements for funding through 2026. There are no guarantees beyond that.

For what it's worth, while I don't agree with the moron bit of what OP said, I have felt like I have seen HN leaning more pro-Trump. And it does also feel like saying anything critical of him can be heavily downvoted. There really does appear to be a large contingent of pro-Trump people on here, at least in my experience. I don't have citations, just my own experience, so, obviously take it for what it is.

Anecdotally, I have some extended family who were very pro-Trump. One of them recently discovered that her job was funded through a federal grant, and now it’s likely going to be cut even though she doesn’t work for the government directly. They also discovered that one of their family members is covered by Medicaid through an avenue that’s looking like it will be cut. They went through a stage of disbelief, but now they’re in a phase where they’re sure everything will be fine and Trump will get it fixed. It’s only a matter of time until they realize that they were the intended targets of the cuts, not accidental damage.

I keep hearing stuff like this, but it doesn't seem to be widespread enough to seem to matter, at least in my circle. There's this whole topic of conversation where there's this voter regret thing. I'm in Michigan, so there's been a few of these I've seen proclaiming the Muslim community are having regrets voting for Trump (it was a big thing around the election due to the whole Gaza situation, because voting for Harris was apparently not going to be enough). But I am worried I'm just seeing bullshit propaganda and these types of things aren't actually what's happening because everyone I've talked to seem to be content with the way things are going. It's incredibly weird.

Absolutely insane that this is what we've come to. It is mind blowing to me that this is what people want. We are regressing this country so rapidly that we are likely to become one of those shithole countries the president so loudly proclaimed Haiti, El Salvador and others were.

You should get 5 years of updates out of it I suspect. It was originally released in September of 2021. So, 2026 might be the final year of iOS updates you'll get, then it's just a matter of how long they back port any security fixes. Sometimes devices end up getting longer support so it's tough to say for sure.

At this point one of these SE type devices is on my list for any future upgrades. I've gone to carrying a pocketable camera with me pretty much anywhere so having a good camera on my phone is no longer necessary, which means no more Pro model for me.

Thanks, I ended up going with this one. Looks like there's a new Flint 3 coming, but rumors seem to be indicating it is going to be more expensive and is possibly not OpenWRT compatible due to chipset. So, Flint 2 it is for now.
