A proven track record of being self motivated and being persistant with their goals are far more valuable traits in an individual than a piece of paper saying they went to some college or university for several years.

While I agree with the basic premise of this blog post what I find just as rude and selfish is when people over-generalize late-comers to include anyone that is late at all ever and don't care about the "why?" even if it is quite a valid reason.

I've had this happen to me multiple times, and I'm the most reliable person I know when it comes to this stuff.

Reasoning aside, sometimes people are just rude and selfish and it doesn't have to have anything to do with being late at all it's just one of many symptoms of the underlying problems.

I have dealt with it in the past by using their egos against them to force them to be accountable for their actions to the point where they back themselves into a corner which is usually when the lies and deceit start becoming very noticeable which gives me all the reasons I need to remove them.

I've never met someone that was an elitist and not full of crap.

The most 'elite' people I've ever had the pleasure to know were intact very humble about it so whenever I come across someone who acts elite but is not at all humble about it they usually don't last too long because I see this as an attitude problem that can and should only be solved by the individual.

It can't be mining, otherwise we would see similar patterns in South Australia (at least) with similar patterns likely to be visible in every other state as well.

I'd be interested in knowing why this is so as well.

This reads to me like a "6 steps to becoming a better web developer" article because the author completely fails to talk about anything "new".

I see your pipe dream on a daily basis as do many other competent functional programmers so I have to disagree with your entire argument which seems to more related to human error than programming paradigms getting in the way.

Yeah, there's no doubt it sucks but so can working for smaller organisations. It's all about the people your working with. The bigger the company, the more deadwood you likely have to work with.

To be fair though the topic of discussion was semantics so if we are only talking about semantics it is correct as per the dictionary terminology to call JavaScript an FP or an OOP because it is both.

This is exactly how I feel also.

This simple logic of fitting smaller things together to make bigger things has always delivered superior results for me regardless of the language in use.

OOP seems ass backwards to me but everyone I talk to generally doesn't have a clue how FP is different to OOP!

I think that spending 9 months on a naming problem and coming up with a name that is still not very good at all is indicative of the real problem which is that you guys need to look for outside help on this one from someone who has the expertise to actually execute well in this area.

If you had done this originally, this blog post would never have been written, but you would have had a superior name to learndotdotcom 8+ months ago.

I know it may look bad to change your name again, but thinking long term, this confusion around this name is going to impact your organisation in ways that you can't even measure so if it is at all an option at this case I would strongly recommend pursuing an alternate path.

That would be great, but I think the time frame isn't realistic unless we already have the technology to do this but it is not out of the lab yet so to speak.

If we do, then perhaps it is possible to make the manufacturing processes simple enough within this time frame to bring the costs down to the point where these types of companies would be commercially feasible.

Indeed it is a fine line, but there is plenty of things you can learn along the way to make that line a little less fine until it gets to the point that the line might not even exist anymore!

Give yourself some credit, you know stuff, and you can know even more if you want to :-)

I find that having an understanding of human psychology is a critical step towards being effective with this kind of stuff, because it helps you work through the psychology of other people for a common goal (ie, a random conversation with a stranger, job interview, speech, etc).

Without it, your flying blind. When I was younger and flying blind it cost me a number of futures I will never see now.

Humbleness can come off as exploitable and dumb, just as much as it can come off as being intelligent, it's not just what you say, it's also how you say it!

Almost every change I see is a step back, instead of forward, which is crazy considering how awful it was before.

Then again Ebay's strengths were never in anything product related.

I do believe that Ebay is very strong in the business side of things which is the real reason why they are still here today.

Sadly the product has always been in a state of neglect, so maybe I'm crazy for actually expecting something different from them this time.

If you don't have the personal desire to learn in the first place, then I doubt that education can genuinely "teach" you this.

Where does this desire come from? It comes from within, so it can't be "taught" to most people who are unreceptive in the first place.

During my life of 27 years, I have met only a few other individuals with the same eagerness for self growth as I have, and hundreds of people who have no interest or concept of what self growth even means and dozens of additional people who are somewhere in between and use their social skills to manipulate other people instead of manipulating themselves to be better people.

The total percentage of Mac+iOS across the total uniques was quite high at around 25% and like your figures, a huge portion of this was from iOS users, not Mac users.

Never thought to do a run down by OSX version but I agree that the numbers would be very small.

The stats across a number of large Australia media entertainment sites I was involved with earlier this year were between 1.5% to 2.0% mac chrome users from january to march.

Uniques over this period were between 2-3 million.

I'm part of that small percentage although I'm trying to change to Safari!

I never said or implied Nokia was a startup either? Nokia is a big company with big problems without the resources to branch out a little and test the water with anything, and this will probably be their downfall. That was the whole point behind my previous post!

That's how smart companies are doing it - they are A/B testing competing solutions. Take a look at Google - that's still working on Chrome OS, in spite of Android being a success.
