I'm building a mod for the game Subway Builder (http://subwaybuilder.com) that lets me undo/redo individual stations and tracks, instead of clearing all blueprints.

From what I've read, user accounts are tagged as being US created and are therefore blocked from accessing the app.

I can't begin to imagine what this world would look like, but I can keep dreaming...

I think splitting up Maps from Google/Apple would make OpenStreetMaps see a lot more usage and improvements.

Amazon Shopping should absolutely be split into an online store and a logistics company.

I'd like to see something even more radical when splitting up Infrastructure (AWS / GCP / Azure), such as the Government offering Infrastructure similar to the Postal Service, effectively turning AWS / GCP / Azure into Fedex / UPS.

Is there any context that could help understand wtf I’m looking at?

Is this a collection of resources that promote using things other than loops while programming?

Are we advocating for a world without physical loops, eg. Rollercoasters without loops?

Seems to be an issue with the latest macOS update, they had similar issues in macOS Ventura and I copied the fix over for macOS Sonoma and was able to see the IDE after running from IntelliJ.

I'm curious to find resources on learning this tool however I was only able to find the tutorials from LXStudio.

Is anyone using this software in production and can comment on its experience vs. TouchDesigner? TouchDesigner's node system always pissed me off, as it felt like an unnecessary barrier that just made things harder.

Also in general, any VJs on hacker news?

EDIT: Some more instructions to run the application would be great, after loading the project locally and running `mvn validate`, I'm seeing the program execute but nothing is showing up on my screen.

I'll add that I'm at out of work Software Engineer with a BS in Comp Sci and I've been researching to see if a Masters in ML/AI is worth it.

I haven't seen anything indicating it's essential, and I still see that with a MS in AI/ML you're still most likely going to be doing Software Dev... I'm sure it's different for a PhD, but as the other commenter said, it's going to take a lot longer.

Right now I'm basically trying to just re-create the TikTok / Youtube Shorts / Instagram Reels experience of infinitely scrolling videos.

Mostly just building for fun though.

I thoroughly appreciated this article as I've been building a short-form video content streaming service and the performance hasn't been what I expected.

Granted, I knew that my service needs to be able to scale at different bottlenecks, but a lot of "build your own video service!" tutorials start with:

- Build a backend, return a video file

- Build a frontend, embed the video

And that leaves a lot to be desired in terms of performance. I think the actual steps should be:

- Build a backend that consists of:

  - Video Ingestion service

  - Video Upload / Processing Service that saves the video into chunks

  - Build a streaming service that returns video chunks

  - Build or use a video streaming library that can play video chunks as a stream

I've walked by / inside of this building countless times, never knowing what "Nessie" was codename for..

I don’t have a great answer for you, but I will say that leadership’s lack of data / concrete reasoning was the most jarring aspect.

Throughout the company, data was used to make decisions. Without data, documents would be rejected and projects put on hold. So why is this mandate lacking data? It managed to ruin a lot of trust that employees had placed on leadership.

I kept asking leadership how they were embodying this LP while I was still at Amazon and I never got an answer. To me, Andy Amazon should remove LPs 15 + 16 in an attempt to build some credibility but I get why that will never happen. If it wasn't clear before, it's clear now: Amazon leadership will lie at every opportunity if it means making a smidge more money (it's their fiduciary duty, after all).

Low performers == people acting with empathy? I thought the Earth's best employer would "lead with empathy" [1]?

I'm (voluntarily) leaving today after 5 years, I guess my performance was good enough to let me stay for that long.

That’s a very good take, I completely agree (but do feel bad that you’ve been going in!).

My last day is today, my org tried very hard to keep me. They were going to get me a remote exception until the email came out, now they have no idea what will happen.

Just like you explained, everyone told me that the director would shield us. That one email changed everything.

- Amazon employees that were going into an office pre-pandemic switched to virtual when the company asked.

- Amazon employees stay productive, company makes the most it ever has due to the pandemic.

- Amazon fumbles for 1.5 years, doesn’t clearly communicate the desire to have everyone working in Seattle/hubs again, continues hiring remote talent.

- Most employees get frustrated at the fact that Amazon has complete control of the contract. Amazon says “you must work here” and there’s 0 room to negotiate.

Now I get it, we’re US workers with little workers rights and we get paid good money. So, to people like you, we should suck it up and just deal with it! Quit being so entitled!

I think a lot of people compare playing the game to the hobby of model trains / town building.

There really isn’t an end goal for me, I’m not trying to make my city a certain size. I’m trying to make something beautiful, that is fun to imagine living in.

I also think mods are essential if this is the way you want to play, as it’s much easier to get nit-picky and detail oriented with the correct tools.

330 was my favorite non-400 class at umd, I took it with Anwar Mamat (excellent professor) whom, I was surprised to learn, is managing a team at Amazon now.

Learning OCaml was wonderful; learning Prolog was a hellish nightmare.

What was the biggest factor in contributing to your decision to start taking T supplements? You were already happy with how you looked, so I’m curious to hear why you decided to take them.

I’ve held this idea in the back of my mind that someday, at some point, when I plateau, or when my body starts to deteriorate, I’ll start taking T.

I put myself in the (Those who fear expansion of Government control) group, and do not hide the fact that I have a clear bias on Anthropogenic global warming (AGW). My bias is based on fear of Government expansion and the observation of AGW data presentation fraud – not based on financial or any other personal benefit. I merely have found that the closer you look at the data and alarmists’ presentations, the more fraud you find and the less you think there is an AGW problem... For decades, as a professional experimental test engineer, I have analyzed experimental data and watched others massage and present data. I became a cynic; My conclusion – “if someone is aggressively selling a technical product whose merits are dependent on complex experimental data, he is likely lying”. That is true whether the product is an airplane or a Carbon Credit.[1]

You may not face the "dire climate change" but the future generations will. Or we can nitpick the studies and claim it as government fraud-- it's probably easier that way.
