The main challenge is that the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for impulse control and other things, only fully develops around age 25.

The problem with that is without some explicit instruction or guidance or invention before they have full control of their impulses, not everyone tames the beast unscathed.

This is a great start, well done!

Eventually it would be amazing to import (for example) a buck converter circuit with a wide voltage input, fixed output suitable for RF, and have it automatically check available components at JLCPCB and then lay it all out with, adhering to best practices (ground planes & capacitors right next to pins etc.) If the available components change, it can tweak the footprints and layout without having to start from scratch.

It’s never enough because you think external circumstances (your job, your income, your family) are responsible for your happiness - they are not.

Being happy with the way it is has very little to do with your external circumstances and more to do with your internal disposition. That’s why you can find people in all different kinds of circumstances that are happy.

How to get there is a much longer discussion, but focusing on what’s good and feeling grateful for those things is a start.

The only way to be really happy is to serve others. Most of the time that means doing whatever it is that you do (working, parenting, teaching etc.) as well as you can with others in mind. Sometimes you have to do a bit more.

That’s just the way we are.

I once heard someone say that depression is a spiritual problem, as in the cause lies with your relationship (or lack there of) with a higher power.

I just had a thought - what if there is a biological or evolutionary quirk that believing in a higher power results in more happiness? It would certainly explain why some people who seem to have a supernatural outlook are so happy dispite what seems like terrible suffering.

E.g. Carlo Acutis [1] was known for his cheerfulness despite suffering and dying from leukaemia.

Then in some way, we are in agreement. Science cannot say anything meaningful about things that don’t affect reality. Religion (or theology) concerns itself with the reason that reality exists.

The purview of science is limited to phenomena that can be observed or experienced. The purview of religion (specifically theology) is that which cannot be explained by science (now or ever)

Not really - empirical science makes the assumption that nothing exists outside of the game (or at least anything that exists outside the game has to be proved from elements within the game)

The way I see it (using an analogy that necessarily oversimplifies things) is that if this existence were like a computer game, and we were the characters in it, then science attempts to understand the game, and religion (or perhaps more accurately theology) tries to understand the game developer.

For fast prototyping I’ve started using jlpcb.com and even moved from Eagle to their easyeda designer - having a library of components that are in stock, without having to find and verify the footprint makes it a thousand times easier, even if the design software is pretty basic.

It’s strange that people seem to think that work is always a burden - try do nothing for a few weeks and see how that affects your mood.

Work, while has its difficult moments, and parts that can be very tedious, is one of the greatest things we can do.

No beer ever tasted better than one after a solid day’s work, and being part of the advancement of civilisation, even in some small way is pretty much the pinnacle of human achievement.

If you hate working, I’d say change your attitude or change your job.

The thing I wonder about, is that presumable we can control temperature, pressure, magnetism, electric currents, elements and pretty much everything we know and understand in the physical to a relatively fine degree. We can simulate most environments that have existed on the planet over its existence, and yet with all that control, we cannot create even the simplest of life. We can manipulate it, alter it, destroy it - but we cannot yet create it. So either we don’t understand things nearly as well as we think we do, or there are some things that we don’t even know about yet.

I’m convinced this is a result of typing on a keyboard - it seldom happens when I’m writing.

I think that after a typing for a while, your brain tries to introduce some optimization, i.e. while your one finger goes for the letter ‘t’ (my left hand), your brain queues up the letter ‘h’ for another finger on your other hand. Quite often, and possibly because I’m right hand dominant, the hand going for the letter ‘h’ gets there first. It usually happens with the same pairs of letters.

It would not surprise me if keyboards have introduced whole new kinds of dyslexia.

I have noticed this has crept into my writing occasionally - if I have been typing a lot - usually with the same pairs of letters. I will write the second one first, and then go back and insert the first one.

As long as the dumb AI is unable to guess our wishes, there will be a need to specify them using a precise language. We already have such language, it’s called math. The advantage of math is that it was invented for humans, not for machines. It solves the basic problem of formalizing our thought process, so it can be reliably transmitted and verified

The same is true of most programming languages - they were all made for humans. Math has the advantage of being to prove formally that it solves the problem, but that isn’t a requirement for most software.

If we tried to express the same ideas in C++, we would very quickly get completely lost.

Same is true for many things that you can express in C++, but not in Math.

Math used this way is essentially just another programming language - with massive advantages in some circumstances, and massive disadvantages in others - I can’t find any argument in this article as to why it is a better bet than any other language.

Marriages and having children will become less and less popular, and under-population will start to be a real concern for economies.
