societal downsides become more and more apparent

not sure, but in the greater picture of overpopulation, porn seems to be a cheap and effective measure compared to medical/physical alternatives.

agreed i sound a bit pessimistic here, but companies regularly show that the only thing that matters is the bottom line, so i stand by the assertation that breaking the law/eula is not really a question of ethics.

second point; you and i may not be using android and google backup, a vast majority does.

i think he was saying that there is nothing preventing fb from having the wa-client piggyback the content of the messages back to them and call "oops" if found out.

also the issue of device-backups containing the unecrypted message history which is beeing shared from google to facebook.

as a parent i can tell you that _NOONE_ is prepared before having children and that there will be times when your consideration and love leave you alone and you gonna fuck up.

but dont read this too negative, kids are the best there is!

and while a lot of the hn audience may think like:

I hope parents can be considarate, prepared, loving and financially stable before having children.

if you wait til everyting is "perfect", you loose to the despicable retards that dont care.

That has turned out to be a really terrible rule.

maybe in the ivory tower of web shit, but it is essential for internet/society. like you said

in cases where the other end is not negotiable.

aiming for robustness is key if you want to enable a diverse ecosystem.

SMS between Android phones are rock solid

not just android, they work with every mobile handset even with the poorest reception or (even lack of) data-plan.

i use ~200 sms per year, pretty constant since i got my first mobilephone.

kinda sad we didnt come up with something better thou.

not op and aware this may not be representive, but i share the preference for telegram as a just-works, "fun" and high-penetration messenger with whatsapp as a first and sms as second compatability fallback. this beeing in germany.

tg is light on resources like phone storage and bandwidth (and hence money) and has excellent multidevice support.

apart from that i don't belive one can have a seriously private conversation involving a device running popular versions of android/ios.
