I was surprised to not find anything about possible cures or treatments in the article.

I had bad allergies myself in my teenage years - unable to sleep for weeks - I finally sought help. The western medicine offers protein shots (similar treatment as to food allergies) but I heard good things about acupuncture. First, I was very skeptical about how needles could "help" with allergies. But about 2 months into the treatment (two sessions per week) the pollen season started. The air felt "heavy to breathe" but to my surprise I was not effected that year at all. After finishing the whole treatment I was allergy free for many years. Now I sometimes feel it on bad days with clouds of pollen hanging in humid air. My uneducated guess is, that my acupuncture treatment I received over 2 decades ago "wears off".

I wonder if others experienced similar or if I was a statistical outlier to a well shaped Gauss curve?

Thank you for clarifying!

The German term is "Pilze sammeln" which literally translates to: collect mushrooms.

There are many dialects of the German language - where I'm from, we would use "Schwammerl suchen" ("Schwammerl" as another term for "Pilz(e)"). This literally translates to: searching for mushrooms.

That's right! It's called "merit order" [0]. Best scenario would be to either decouple the gas price from the price of electricity or get rid of the merit order system altogether. The gas price jacks up the price of kWh by so much that alternative energy providers (wind, hydro, solar,...) are making fortunes! The EU is not interested to change that although Spain and Portugal swolled the penalty for suspending the merit order system. Something I find to be long overdue in other EU countries as well since the elevated price for electricity drives inflation. A lot. [1]

No, just no.

I'm long-time unemployed, had my last interview in Dec 2025. But what I can tell you is that during my interviews I get a lot of questions regarding numbers like: "how did you get to $X mio ARR, saved Y% on the data ingestion pipeline, or decreased processing algorithm speed by Z mins?"

Don't do that!

Everybody is trying to "quantify" their resume but hiring managers are calling the bluff. It's straight out lying, they smell your BS.

Speaking of lying: I get a lot of input from my peers how to actually make it to the next round of an interview process. Across the board they advised me to inflate my expertise of skill XYZ, if asked. Speaking humbly about yourself is not recommended - quite the contrary: brag, but keep it vague and very brief. I never had to do this in the past but now it's almost required.

Shameless plug: If you have any leads that help me secure a full-time position as Solutions Architect (or the like) you won't be disappointed - I'm a fast learner, taking on the toughest challenges! Now that all my savings are gone, I finally need find some work - maybe with your help? Thank you!

I used to DJ in the 90's with vinyl on 1210s decks. A lot has changed in the industry and I'd like to spin at home for fun since I'm still a "househead".

Anyone knows a good YT channel that explains my options? Money is tight these days so I'm unable to buy the latest and greatest but I'm curious of the new technology used.

- Max & Moritz !!!

- Grimm's Märchen (read the gruesome originals!)

- Struwwelpeter

- Erich Kästner: Das fliegende Klassenzimmer, Das doppelte Lottchen, Emil & die Detektive, Pünktchen & Anton

- Das kleine "Ich-bin-ich"

- Oh, wie schön ist Panama

- Pipi Langstrumpf (already mentioned)

- Der letzte Mohikaner

- Zu Fuss durch Afrika

At least you got an interview! My last interview was before the holidays 2023, just rejections since (or I get ghosted). Competition is insane at the moment. Here are exaples:

) trying to apply within the first hour the job was posted is usually too late. I find openings claiming, eg. "posted 21 minutes ago, 28 applicants" and within a few hours the number of applicants shoots up to 300 or more.

) The first email I recieve by HR is usually promising, like "we liked your profile, etc can we schedule a short intro call?". After my response it's crickets.

Is it just me or is the tech/IT jobmarket on a very bad downswing?

Just to clarify: was "fired without cause" (worked "at will" which most of full-time employments are in the US). By asking why they were getting rid of me I heard the pharse "for no good reason, really" like a broken record. This was enough indication that it was clearly in regards to my talk with HR a few days prior.

Also, during my announcement to HR about my wife's circumstances, I remarked I wanted to take some time off to be there for wifey & baby.

The company was 90% lawyers so just in case I wanted to proceed legal action against them, their Armada of lawyers made a possible follow-up rather unsavory.

Contrary to the article stating there were no documentaries that wouldn't parrot the conclusions of the Warren Commission, I remember watching a BBC documentary about JFK's assassination. They mentioned 4 videos were available, stabilized and enhanced them, with the logical outcome: there were several shooters present that day.

Anyone able to recall the title? Curious now - where can I re-watch it?

Thanks!

As a senior you have other responsibilities as well: train your juniors and then delegate your work. Let them rotate once a week on different tasks. Make them "report" to you what obstacles they are facing and eventually just steer the ship and let them sail it.

If above does not result in any relieve in your work load (eg. new tasks are added to your to do list by your boss, etc) then take the chute.

I think it's very common in Europe to adapt your working hours to your situation in life. Many of my European friends decrease their hours for a small pay cut since they have children now or have to take care of elderly. Just call HR and discuss the deal. Done.

I recently worked for a Belgium startup in the NY office. Many of my coworkers in the old world had an agreement to work less for less pay. When I asked my HR in US to reduce hours for less pay due to Covid-19 the answer was exactly like OP listed: "we have always done it this way... it's not possible in US ... if you decrease your hours by one hour you will count as half-time employee and lose all benefits".

In an instant I would give up 20% pay for an extra day off. Covid-19 is far from over and lots of parents are still juggling all sorts of issues.

This. Happened to me as the agency I worked for got bought and pretty much everyone lost their job due to redundancy. I was CTO back then and I it hurt to see my team of engineers, creatives dissolve within a few days.

Since I was unable to find another position in an instant (was on H1B) I took the offer of the purchasing agency to work as a database admin just to stay in the country. I took a huge pay cut and a significant change in my career. Never was I able to return to a managerial position after.

It seems racist to bully the crém de la crém of tech workers to find a job in such a short period or to get the hell out of the country. I have not experienced such a hostile work environment in any other country.

Now that I have a family I'm thinking to move to Europe where there's health insurance even if I lost my job. You receive financial aid for children (if you happen to have some), most countries in Europe offer free nursery schools, just to name a few pros.

"Thanks US for taking advantage of all H1B workers. But I'm outta here."

When I announced the birth of my child the company I worked with fired me instantly and living off one income (my spouse was still working) was tough. Money got so short that I started looking for cheap but "healthy" food options. I decided on organic potatoes. For the last 2 years I have been boiling 5 potatoes for lunch (exactly 32 mins on the stove), serving it with white balsamic vinegar, sunflower oil and salt. I feel with all the junk food around full of crappy soy and corn sirup this is the least bad alternative. It is always a challenge to feed myself especially when I train for a Marathon. I do lose weight during this period and very often I go to bed extremely hungry only to wake up at 4am for yet another training run. I stay focused and try not to spend any money on anything for me. Temptations are everywhere though! I only spend money to feed my child.

What I learned over the last 2 years is important: don't ever eat crap out of convenience - there's lots of healthy alternative options out there even if you live in a very expensive neighborhood (like I); never ever through out limp vegetables! You can still throw it in a pot with broth and make "soup/stew"; invest into your future (your kids) and don't be ashamed to admit your days are counted ...

I take this as a life lesson. Once I have a job again, I will appreciate food even more.

Targeting permanent Director of Software Development / VP of Engineering / CTO / hybrid hands-on & managerial roles in well-established start-up or mid-sized mature company.

This. I think if we, as a species, wanna survive the next two generations we need a more radical approach to fix climate change. It should be ranked as the #1 issue to resolve, quasi the "ultimate goal". And this, my fellow HNers, won't happen by pointing fingers or call out people.

The political establishment as we know it has to go. We _ALL_ have to pull in the same direction and have to put common interests above individual wealth and greed. I'm not at all left but I can't tolerate that big corporations are getting a tax cut or even cheat the tax system while the little man has to pay their fair share. I have seen how much money goes down the drain every year with authorities (eg. Pentagon) don't even know what they are spending it on. All this has to stop. We need common sense here: take $ out of politics (make senators can only be elected for 2 terms max), stop fighting wars overseas, address climate change where people don't wanna see it (ie. Superbowl half time show, Sunday television, etc), change our perfectly trimmed backyards into mini farms, completely stop relying on fossil fuels, replace plastics wherever possible (eg. food industry could leverage technologies based on corn starch), and much more.

And all begins with you!

Unfortunately a Trump or even Sanders won't help us here either. We need to skip the forward thinking by at least 20 to 50 years or the planet will be in jeopardy.

(Disclaimer: Granted, it's not always easy to hear the truth about what's wrong with the world. But the sooner we start rolling up our sleeves and cleaning up the mess the sooner we will be getting ROI, ie. clean water, clean air, progress in healthcare, just to name a few).

Why am I not surprised?

Back in 2011/2012 I worked with LinkedIn's api on a product for one of our clients at a small web shop. While coding the login auth my team and I discovered more than 10 security issues and addressed them to LinkedIn. According to them they had only one dev working on the api and there was no time or resource available to fix these issues. So we filed bug reports w/o LinkedIn ever acknowledging them. Two weeks later LinkedIn was hacked and 167mio user accounts were sold for a few bitcoins on the darkweb.

Bottom line: take security serious. Throw so money and resources on it! Don't be greedy and let things like this happen again. Oh, and don't hire people who can't spell SRE or are 22-year-old fresh out of college folks who are not fully aware of their responsibility.

All this shows us the ridiculous hiring strategy of LinkedIn, a terrible, understaffed and greedy business, you should never work for.

Same here but different reason. I worked in Software Engineering for a financial organization when I announced the arrival of my first child to head of HR (Monday). My performance review was scheduled for Tuesday but my manager postponed to Friday. I was fired (because of my baby) that Friday by head of HR instead of sitting down in 1-1 with my manager or CTO. They just didn't have the guts to tell me that my productivity will drop b/c of lack of sleep, etc. Shitty move but lesson learned: don't announce the due date of your unborn child BEFORE a performance review! Better don't announce it at all if you wanna keep your job.

Masters Computer Science CTO / VP of Engineering with full stack hands-on experience looking for permanent, managerial job in well-established start-up or mid-sized mature company.

Congrats on the decision to go this route!

In the recent past I read a lot about shortening work hours by asking employees to work free of distractions. Instead of killing 2 hrs / day on social media at the office you are restricted to do productive work. Anything else is dealt with later in your spare time. Let's say you need to make a dentist appointment - that's right, you call the dentist before or after work and also schedule the appointment for your off-hours. This way you separate work life from private life. And that's the way to make a 30hrs work week as productive as a 40hrs week.
