Truth. Guess the question is knowing when you need the loan or not or how much of a loan to take out. I love the metaphor.

Strategic thinking isn’t just the generative idea creation of a “strategy”. It’s also about savvy execution within a strategic context.

In every project a thousand decisions are made by “drooling labor” and the better each of those decisions ladders up to the strategy the more meaningful the impact of the work.

Watching people proclaim no impact on strategy but thinking they deserve tons of credit for their code is a failure mode I’ve seen with engineers. Watching people get frustrated not being promoted when “idiot peers” get credit was often more about their own idiocy.

Don’t dismiss the impact you have in every role, it’ll hurt your career and the actual impact you have.

I feel like we have phrases in software like bikeshedding particularly because these sorts of problems are common in teams. It’s not about being idiots it’s about software being more art than science and these things just being hard and people wanting to treat it more like science than art.

As a software engineer I think you need a good balance of both. Strategy that never sees the light of day isn’t that good. Part of the great joy of the art of being a software engineer is putting your stuff out into the world and showing it.

I think if you can't get statistical significance than the growth team model is probably too early. You mostly need to be in the "invest" stage and not the "test" stage. That's not to say you can't try to hack merely that measuring through multivariate tests is a waste of time and effort.

It all comes down to knowing how a company makes decisions. What's the thing that sells. At most companies it is revenue, so you basically run experiments that correlate to revenue strongly and then use that causation to adopt new metrics. People like metrics that lead to their higher order KPIs a lot.

I don't often hire people into manager roles if they have no management experience (usually there are internal people who are looking for that career growth, if we are pulling from outside then it's about experience). That said, there are a few things that would make me at least consider it.

1) the person wants a management career path and seems to understand what it means (org builder, team player, perf reviews, hiring and firing) vs person who thinks their only option for career growth is management and thinks they've done it already as a tech lead and wanna do that role more

2) lots of cross-functional hat wearing and a clear appreciation and happiness with doing project and product management work, a willingness to do any shit work happily in order to make the team better

3) an awesome growth mindset willing to have determination in getting better at it with or without my help, lots of autonomy

4) preternatural judgement and ability to see the forest from the trees, clear potential to help us get better

Interviewed somebody like this recently and it's honestly just hard to say no

This is basically called Net Promoter Score or NPS. Often people use it for products and it's not a bad method for understanding how a company is doing from employees perspective.

I honestly love living in the Bay Area. There is a community for everyone that fits their style, weather is good, food is great, lots of culture opportunities, great for kids, all types of environments in driving distance, international airport, best development community in the world, expensive as all get up.

Live in Oakland and it's hard to imagine living anywhere else.

I'd probably recommend you use the same tricks a good interviewer does to determine if you are a good culture fit.

1) know your requirements 2) use behavioral questions instead of hypothetical 3) trust your intuition 4) hold a high bar

I think disrupting slack is a mistake. They are still in their infancy and have clearly built a solid product. Disrupt spaces and industries that don't have that :)

I think this is small sample size. I spend a lot of my time as an engineering leader teaching people how to interview for engineers. A lot of them are young but intrinsically recognize that trivia questions aren't important. Because I read about things like behavioral interviewing now instead of the release notes of the new webpack I get to make an impact in my org, but lots of smart companies do the same.

I'd like to take this one step less. Talk to a therapist because it's therapeutic. They might think there is an issue but as much as anything someone can listen to your problems and offer some advice without judgement. They are awesome.

I feel like I was in a similar boat to you. I was living somewhere I didn't like, doing work I didn't like, and felt like I didn't know where I was going. I decided to shake things up and move to the Bay Area and force myself to be more social. A months later, I met the woman who would be my wife before I moved and stayed around with her to try out the relationship. It worked at well. We live in the bay now and just had our 2nd child. My life and work have purpose and I am happy. It was not always easy, and it feels awful right now. Good luck, I hope you find what I have.

We're looking for someone to come in and lead our build and release team. The team has been growing into its own and has a ton of challenges supporting a few hundred engineers as they battle tech debt converting a monolithic backend into a cohesive set of beautiful modern services. You should be interested in leading teams that teach people to fish and write tools and services to enable scale. You should be a good product owner for highly technical work and be excited to have tons of other engineers as your stakeholders. We want a director and a few engineers to help grow our tools and services team. Tools and services are a set of scrum teams that do things like work on frameworks in scala, nodejs, and php that other teams will leverage to automate creation of the core features a good CK service uses. You'll also have teams that are building a highly scalable notifications framework, a core administrative interface, and a variety of other things that we really need full time teams working on now that we scale. Just like build and release, you'll have stakeholders who are all engineers and should be excited about those challenges. You'll also help us break ground on some of our earliest open source projects (we're late to the game).

Staff Software Engineers are what we title our best of the best. If you are the one in your company thinking "I'm the smartest person in the room" and "I wish I had some real peers to talk to about this challenging problem" you probably fit our definition. We have an extremely sharp team with some fantastic engineers who are looking to grow their ranks at the top. If you are excited about topics like domain driven design, distributed systems, high scalability, dockerization, android and ios development, and react and flux; this is a good stop for you.

Finally, we're looking for a couple engineering managers. If you want to take a scrum team (~5 people) in our financial health (how our customers get tons of value out of CK), data engineering (how we figure out things that are useful for our customers), or tools and services (how our teams get stuff done) we need help.
