It is unsafe to mix trusted and untrusted code in the same process. This is why Chrome runs the renderer in a separate process. My concern is that using Java to execute JS increases the probability they are doing this bad mixing. They could be doing it safely but it increases my suspicion.
Customers running js on your server in a Java VM doesn't sound very secure. I could be wrong but when I see Java I get the suspicion that user code and privileged server code are running in the same process. Of course they could have a properly sandboxed java process and are just using Java because that is what they are familiar with.

This headline is misleading because it refers to single use plastic bags. In London none of the shops I go to even sell these bags. However, they do sell multiuse bags which I mostly use similar to how I would use a single use bag.
It could be worse as well because either they haven't declared this income and now HMRC will be after them or they have and they might not be able to get a refund from HMRC. I assume this would be considered a business loss and I'm not sure if you can refund past taxes against a present loss.
I think there is a strong temptation for this when there is a large gap between the value of the social housing to the occupant and the value of the social housing on the market.
This flat is in Victoria which is quite central in London. I would expect you could provide more social housing at the same cost in some of the outer zones. There is obviously a trade off where the increased amount of housing from going further out is not worth the inconvenience to the occupants. However, I would expect this trade off kicks in well outside of zone 1.
For the sake of argument let's assume you could double the zone 1 social housing by moving it to zone 2/3. That seems like a pretty big failure in policy.
This poison thing is interesting because it seems like one poison value could have the capability of poisoning all the data in your program. You could imagine a faithful implementation of the rust abstract machine after hitting one code path would cause your program to start generating complete nonsense.
Controlling speech in order to prevent violence does not work when the people carrying out the violence control the institutions. In your Rwandan example the Rwandan government could not be trusted to censor their own goals. The situations where this works are much rather and smaller because it is about preventing violence that doesn't have major backing.
There are 8 billion people in the world. I'm not surprised some of them hold terrible ideas. The idea that some people hold X view so now we need to give the state Y power is insane with our population level because it can justify anything.
I think it is mostly on social issues that politics has drifted left on. So it wouldn't surprise that people would different opinions on the drift if they weighted issues differently.
I would be interested to hear contrary opinions on why we haven't drifted left socially.

I'm not sure how it is not a problem of the users. The up next recommendation is a product of your past behaviour and aggregate behaviour from other users. If you keep on watching 'wrong think' content then yt is going to keep serving it to you. They basically want yt to censor wrong think from their platform even if this content is engaging with their userbase.
I tried to find statistics for this claim by looking at homicide risk but was unable to find anything supporting it. Possibly this is true in non-western countries. I suspect there are lots of confounders if you wanted to isolate the risk that trans brings. For example apparently trans people have a higher rate of sex work which would increase the risk. On the other hand I wouldn't be surprised if trans were coming from higher socio-economic groups on average which would lower the risk.
It could also be someone trying to screw with the mining incentives to break the network. When this block appears other miners have a strong incentive to ignore the block and try to create their own forked chain with the weird transaction. And if someone succeeds then all the other miners are in the same situation again. I guess it doesn't happen either because miners care about the health of the chain or they have rational expectations about other miners.
Reading this comment. I have to admit the reason I write 10 lines of code on average is because I spend 95 percent of my work time browsing hackernews or slatestarcodex or dare I say r/the_donald. I also strongly suspect a lot of people are avoiding work in a similar way based on relative productivity.
