Based on the recent models run by UK, the same models that prompted the White House to warn against gatherings of greater than 10 people, the curve doesn't end even without intervention until August. With intervention what we are going through right now could last well into 2021.

It's unlikely that other countries can do what China has done. As an example, China is able to do 200 CT scans a day at each fever station throughout the affected regions. In the US we can maybe do what 10 CT scans a day with a single machine? In China they were able to figure out within a short duration if someone needed to be quarantined. They built hospitals in days. It's not just about locking down. China has people taking temperatures of people entering their apartments or when they show up at work. There are drones patrolling the streets that detect people with a high temperature. I have a hard time seeing us in the US build out what China did in just a few days.

Longer than April, it's been spreading in China since December and it's still spreading now, 3 months later, it's just beginning to spread elsewhere. It's probably going to be a while. The goal of the various health organizations is to slow the spread so that hospitals and medical services aren't overwhelmed by everyone getting sick all at once.

iirc Google Maps was initially not a success. MapQuest had a majority market share of online maps up until the release of the iPhone. So they floundered for about a year or two.

It's good the company where I work, which employs about 70 people, allows us all to remote. We have a large space that we rent in a WeWork office in San Francisco but we can also work from home if we want. We have remote employees in other states and over the last year have built a very strong remote culture. All of our meetings have people who are remote, in fact often more people are remote than not these days. I imagine our company's work from home policy will help avoid downtime and really make a difference compared to companies that are just going to have to shut down when faced with the reality of this horrible virus.

Sure, but it's not as big as an ecosystem. Knowing JavaScript at this point is way more valuable than learning VBA. I'm not saying VBA is bad, I think visual basic is great, I have fond memories of it, but reality is JavaScript is going to be what companies are going to want their employees to know.

JavaScript has a huge upside because a lot of people already know JavaScript. The more tools and platforms switch to JavaScript the more of an office superhero users are when they know something about the language. The productivity of employees will jump off the charts. When you send someone to train for one thing that utilizes JavaScript you get the benefit that those skills may also happen to work with something else as well.

How is some random lay person running a wordpress site going to know how to prevent invalid activity when anyone could do this to them? I hate that corporate speak too about they can't comment and how they have tools, without addressing the concern people have. I resent how much power Google and Facebook have over small businesses that have an online presence. I don't know why taxpayers should have to pay for the search for E.T.. That's a hard sell. Probably not what the founders had in mind when they gave the government the power to take money out of the pockets of the country's citizenry. I'm all for the social contract, investing in infrastructure, and making sure everyone has affordable housing and medicine, but this is a tough fucking sell. Get some rich scifi enthusiast to fund a grant. Some people just see the country's coffers as a free for all for any crazy idea. That money belongs to the public it came from and should be used to the benefit of its people with utmost seriousness it deserves. What the government can spend its money on is a zero-sum gane and any dollars we can invest into kids getting better meals or finding a biomarker for detecting ALS would be better spent than figuring out if UFOs are real.
