I have Pushover. I love it. I have a bash alias that I use to notify me when some command completes. I get a notification on my phone, and a tap on my wrist letting me know some hours long task is complete, and I can do the next step.

I have a Octoprint integration which lets me know when 3d prints have completed.

You can also modify the priority of a message, so I can send "critical" events if I need to, although I use that rarely.

What about the constant Brave Premium ads? I got many notifications every day asking me to pay them, I couldn’t find a way to disable them. They had intrusive ads for premium in every new tab page as well.

Interrupting my work to ask me to send you money is unacceptable, Mozilla has never done that to me.

The web is slowly becoming chrome only and I hate it. I recently had to switch to Chromium because Firefox simply did not work for the websites at my job.

I have always found coolers with heat pipes provide the best cooling for mine.

I looked into using ffmpeg to “compress” video podcasts by lowering the framerate a lot, but it didn’t seem to do as much as I thought (about 50% size reduction). The theory was that a video podcast is mostly talking heads with an occasional chart on the screen, so you really only need a frame every second, or five seconds.

I’ve had fiber at my house from day one provided by a local ISP. Comcast came in and buried their own fiber lines (years later) for all the houses in my neighborhood. Soon after, my ISP bumped my speed and lowered my monthly bill.

We desperately need more competition. It’s the only thing that actually lowers prices.

Also, I will happily pay higher prices to never pay for Comcast again. So they won’t see a penny from me.

I disagree that SMS two factor is more secure than a password alone. I have found that once you enter your phone, it is more trusted than your password (meaning it alone can reset your password). A phone number is as secure as the least competent support person at your phone provider.

A password, with email reset is better. My email has two factors of authentication, rather than whatever my phone provider requires as proof.

Agreed. When Netflix had just about everything, piracy took a big hit.

We need a return to Blockbuster-like selection, but streaming. A streaming service should purchases however many copies they are streaming, and replace them on a schedule as the copy “wears out”, like Blockbuster.

I have an open-source project that is similar to this. Its purpose is to allow easy creation of an off-grid digital library. It can automatically download videos, archive web pages, PDFs, etc. It has a global search which searches all your files, as well as any Zim files you have downloaded (Wikipedia, etc). It also uses OpenStreetMap to display a map which renders the map tiles offline.

I absolutely loved the first film. I am very excited for the second part. I enjoy long movies, so having two parts is good.

One part of the first movie that sticks out to me is seeing their space ships for the first time. It was such a different style of space ship that it (plus the music) really struck me in the moment and stayed with me.

Their data is pretty much always wrong for me. I share my father's name, so whenever I do a credit check they ask me about the homes I owned before I was even born... Unfortunately, my family has moved a lot and I can't remember all the addresses.

Yes, that is the second half of the documentary. They were trying to come up with delicious recipes to take advantage of the situation. I don't imagine I would like to eat jellyfish either, but I would certainly give it a try.

I watched a documentary years ago about jellyfish invading Japan. Basically, the jellyfish population was exploding because the fish didn't exist to eat the baby jellyfish and keep them under control. The Japanese fishermen were furious that they kept catching jellyfish, rather than the fish that they wanted. They were the cause of their own suffering. Sounds like things haven't changed...

I hesitate to think that Japan could do something about it though. If they stopped over-fishing, that would just attract Chinese fishermen who would fill the gaps. Just can't win without global cooperation.

They push their own ad supported streaming. They continually place adult oriented recommendations where my kids can see (no matter how many times I remove them).

I recently canceled my Prime subscription. One of the major reasons was all the pre-roll ads. I refuse to pay, and also have to watch ads. I ripped the few shows I had purchased (they were not available on disc) before I left.

I also canceled my Hulu because of the price hike, as well as how difficult their interface is. They put things I have never watched up top, the show I would like to continue watching is several rows off screen. Very predatory.

I have moved to Plex, but will probably move off of that as they continue to poison the product.

In the end, those with physical media, and pirates win.

They live in their parents' homes. Its not like they could afford cable themselves.

I have made a similar one of these called a Foxhole radio. It needs only wire, pencil graphite, a razor blade, and a crystal earphone. Easy to make and fun to use. It requires no power because it uses the power of the radio signal itself. It only works with AM stations however.

Perhaps ban them from receiving advertising revenue. Force them to go subscription only. Advertising revenue comes from clicks, not reads, we want people to actually read and contemplate. This is closer to what old-school newspapers did.

In theory, subscribers will leave outlets that lie to them for outlets that are more honest and fact-based. Or, if I'm pessimistic, subscribers will give money to whoever does rage-bait the best...

I'm surprised Google encourages syncing the codes to the cloud... kind of defeats the purpose. I sync my TOTP between devices using an encrypted backup, even if someone got that file they could not use the codes.

FIDO2 would go a long way to help with this issue. There is no code to share over the phone. FIDO2 can also detect the domain making the request, and will not provide the correct code even it the page looks correct to a human.

I work, my wife is a homemaker with our kids. I love the fact that her work is not taxed. If she had a job, that labor would be taxed, and then the person who we would pay to watch our children would have their income taxed as well. Government would double-dip (triple-dip?) if my wife was working.
