Isn't this just Chaos Theory, Calculus, and the problem of Jerks (third derivative of position in regards to time)?

When you slice complex reality into smaller pieces, within the smaller piece you have a rough idea of velocity, and changes in velocity (aka acceleration), but you have no idea of future speed-bumps, aka the jerks (third derivative of position in regards to time) for that information is outside the frame of reference when you divided reality into smaller pieces.

Thus you have pictures of people / objects in systems but you are not truly understanding relationships thus you miss things even though you feel like you see things. It is all a theme park for our own amusement, it is not real, only hyper-real which becomes uncanny when we start noticing how the images are off.

In sum humans do not always optimize towards one variable like success / fitness.

Instead they optimize to many things like money, prestige, power, security, and so on. Much like you can't describe health as a single thing, when you collapse your insight to a single variable you miss everything in your simulation of how reality works.

This applies to an individual level but especially applies towards a cooperative level with multiple individuals. When we cooperate (or just act in ambiguous situations) sometimes trying to collapse your actions to "mental shortcuts" aka Heuristics in Judgment and Decision-Making to borrow some thinking fast and slow language further reduces insight.

How so?

The cost of soybeans is a lot cheaper to make an artificial burger (once they get the R&D down) than feeding the same soybeans to a cow and getting roughly 1:10 the calorie weight due to energy pyramids. You can get roughly 200 kg of protein per acre per year, while cows it is roughly 19 kg of protein per acre per year.

Of course this is talking future costs, for we are still perfecting artificial plants / proteins that taste like meat even though we been "branding" veggie burgers since the 1980s and the food science goes back hundreds of years prior to that.

Mental Illness as defined by the DSM as not thriving. You can have the symptoms of a disorder, but if you are thriving then you do not have the disorder.

It can seriously mess someone's life up.

Treatment to try fix someone who is not thriving, is precisely because someone's life is already messed up. Yes treatment may make it worse, but it often makes it better and there are treatment algorithms where we use best practices of how to go from here, and what signs should we be mindful for often when the meds make things worse the doctor should be asking the right questions for there are warning signs when the med is making things worse.

Yept the "Middle Way" is both a rejection of pure asceticism and pure hedonoism, but a middle path between extremes. Material things can be used temporary but the goal is "to unfocus" and see beyond material things.

Reason and Language are useful as well, but the various buddhist teachers over 2400 years whole point is to unfocus and see beyond the limitation of how we try to use language to bring an artificial form of order that is not true understanding, nor is it true love or compassion. Instead it is a form of "clinging" that makes things feel overly familiar and safe when the nature of reality is constant change and finding peace with this "uncanny" and thus scary reality if we allow it to scare us in such a way.

Sigh that "Koan" is not literally about killing the Buddha. It is recognizing the divinity is not in an idol or image, including other people. That strand of Buddhism says enlightenment is first found within, and after you find it you see it also in the external world, not in a specific form but you see it everywhere.

Most likely that Koan comes from Linji Yixuan aka 1600 years ago, but Buddhism is likely 2400 or older years ago.

-----

Linji Yixuan also has another saying "If you meet your forefather, kill him" once again this is not literal but is once again excessive reverence to other relationships instead of finding family in all things not just a specific forefather.

A similar statement would be Jesus Christ in the Gospels such as Luke saying you can't be his follower if you love your father, wife, children, siblings, etc more than him. Jesus demanded you love him more than you love your own life, and your duty to his faith is greater than your traditions saying "I must wait" to follow you for first I must bury my dead father and so on. [Once again it is probably not supposed to be taken literally for the Gospels choose certain metaphors for dramatic effect about how one organizes ones priorities.]

the Supreme Court is not particularly fond of the 9th

Sorry but this is FUD you see going around. The most overturned court circuits are as follow.

6th Circuit - 87 percent; 11th Circuit - 85 percent; 9th Circuit - 79 percent; 3rd Circuit - 78 percent;

Furthermore the 9th Circuit does the most basis and almost all of their court cases are not taken up by the Supreme Court, that means less than 1% of Court Cases are overturned.

Source for numbers but other places have written about this.

Agreed generally but as my own memory of reading these research papers and what wikipedia points out that lactase persistence is not caused by a single gene but there are several different gene variants that can produce this same effect.

And we know since the mid 2000s by a dozen or so genetic studies that these genes did not arrive from a single culture or single timeframe, but are an example of "convergent evolution" aka it was beneficial for humans generally and thus when independent random mutations occurred they persisted longer for those people were more likely to breed and thrive. This happened several times in human history and are not a singular event.

And thus individual humans may have Lactase Persistence in adulthood and other individual humans may not have the persistence. Furthermore how much Lactose you can process with the Lactase enzyme is a dependent process where some people can handle some quantities but not too much quantity of Lactose all at once.

Kroger is the second largest supermarket in the US (after Walmart) that has many subsidiaries grocery chains that they have acquired in its 100+ years of existence. Pretty much Kroger bought up other "family" grocery chains and then keeps those chains local names such as Dillons, Frys, King Soopers, City Market, Gerbes, Kwik Mart, etc.

Safeway by contrast is part of the Albertson and Albertsons and its Subsidiaries is the 3rd largest Supermarket chain.

How is this different from the Miller-Urey experiments from the 1950s ? I am asking this for someone who is more knowledgeable and technical than me.

"To my understanding" ? Those 1952 experiments yielded 20 amino acids, and this experiment in 2016 to 2019 experiments merely are demonstrating RNA can be made with a similar experiment? Our cells naturally use RNA, specifically mRNA in a "translation" process at the Ribosomes part of our cells where the Amino Acids are used to create longer protein chains.

Am I remembering my AP Biology correctly or did I get something wrong?

This is big news when the Facebook employees we are referring to starting salary is 120k a year and the median employee is 240k a year. [Note many people who work for facebook are some form of contract employees and thus do not make this, but it was also not a contract employee who recorded this conversation for they do not get to sit down with Mark in these weekly meetings.]

Even if you are not happy with everything about Facebook that income level often prevents this type of behavior for the incentives of company and worker align generally. And it is a big deal for this was a new thing, not a thing that never happens, but also not a thing that happens often that it becomes the new normal.

The bigger thing is a mismatch between the employees of facebook and the management. These weekly meetings happen all the time, what is different is now the employees are recording them and releasing them to the press. This means at least one employee no longer thinks the interest of upper management and the workers align and she or he spent forethought in order to record the conversation and then spent time afterwards figuring out a way to contact the press.

This is a there there, even if the actual conversation transcript is banal and what you would expect from Zuck.

The world of medicine will be in trouble without our system, because govetnments are really not that good at innovation.

Medicine is not like building a factory, completely different capital model for Medicine is about "discovery" there is a universal truth out there (yes there is differences in genes not making it perfectly universal) , and advances in medicine is figuring out this discovery.

It actually appears most of our medicine discoveries use basic research that is governmentally funded and not privately funded.

Pretty much you are applying top down ideology that government is bad no matter the situation or context.

All of this is true, but it was the SoftBank capital flow that made this all possible until now. The reconinging and reform would have happened sooner with WeWork if SoftBank was not providing "free jet fuel."

Softbank is an enabler.

Enabler is true, but a lever requires both the rod and the fulcrum the rod pivots on. Without the enabler the lever would not exist.

It is a public library and they are already putting it out a display open to the public (instead of keeping it in records in the back.) They are also making available other Milton stuff they have on hand such as a 1st edition of Paradise Lost.

Purdue knowed about the drug was highly addictive in 2003. The raw components in Oxycontin were known to be highly addictive before the drug hit the market. Oxycontin was supposed to "solve" the addiction problem, thus it got special drug labeling saying it was less addictive than other drugs of its class.

They had data that it did not solve the problem but they massaged the data, and hid the data that showed it was addictive, and then later hid the data that after the drug was on the market of the ways it was being abused.

The point of this is misdirection sometimes known as cooking the books, where you may have financial documents that say money exist, but they documents are separate from another set of books that says money doesn't exist.

You provide the cooked books to anyone who is suing you, Uncle Sam for taxes, and so on. Of course you have another set of documents that tells you where your money is, the point of having two set of books is to use one set to lie, misdirect, be non truthful in a court of law.

And Limited Liability Corporations have good faith as part of their contract as a requirement. You commit purposeful fraud and the LLC will not shield you. The term for this is known as "Piercing the Veil" / "Piercing the Corporate Veil" and when the veil is pierced your assest away from the corporation can be seized for behavior you did as an agent of the corporation.

Now what are the rules of Piercing the Veil depends on your state for each state has different rules for Limited Liability Corporations, that said all 50 states have ways to pierce the veil for it is just a settled part of common law in the US.

Note this is a first order effect, what I explained above.

The 2nd order effect is that by making more money for the same ad, while your competitors would make less money from the same ad...you can either sit on that profit.

Or you can use your market share and guaranteed profit to make ads less profitable to competitors and this creates a positive feedback cycle where Facebook Ads get more and more market share but other competitors and platforms of Ads gets less and less, which in turn actually allows Facebook to charge more per Ad in the long run (but in the short run Facebook may want to decrease the price per Ad.)

Bingo. It is not exactly better targeting ads. You can sell the same ad (from the same supplier) to the same customer (the person viewing the ad) and the supplier will pay more if they are convinced the ad actually has a higher return rate.

What is the quote again from John Wanamaker "Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is, I don't know which half."

Thus knowing more about their users and what they buy and the ad is successful 1 day, 1 month, 1 year in the future allows Facebook to get paid more.

Agreed with the Zoroastrianism bit, that did occur prior.

I was trying to be simple and concise so I did not mention other strands of monotheism that influenced Judaismm and the Middle East such as the Egyptians / Amun (the Hidden One) or the Persian Zoroastrianism (which pioneered the concept of Angels as winged divine beings that Judaism and Christianity incorporated.) Yadda, yadda, yadda religion and history is complicated but also interesting.

It was Aristotle's Unmoved Mover being incorporated into Christian Thought around AD 50 via Philo of Alexandria that changed Monotheistic religion of God being the Organizer of All Things from Chaos into the Creator of All Things out of Nothing, Ex Nihilo. Beforehand Monotheistic Religions believed God was a creator but he created out of chaos and imbued the formless with a specific form.

Likewise simultaneously around the time of Aristotle during the time of the Hellenistic Era, The Seleucid Empire arose from the fires of Alexander the Great Empire. The 2nd king in the Seleucid Dynasty decided to make a universal time calendar that just increments again and again past individual rulers and this change the nature of stories tremendously in the empire.

When Time Became Regular and Universal It Changed History https://aeon.co/essays/when-time-became-regular-and-universa...

When Antiochus I Soter in 281, after his father death decided to keep the calendar his father created (and he had already served 10 years as a co-ruler prior from 291 to 281.) And not start over it started the various populations that were opposed to the Seleucid authorities to tell apocalyptic tales of the end of days, not just the end of the ruler / authority but the end of everything. Especially since later Seleucid rulers such as Antiochus IV Epiphanes (175 BC to 164 BC) seem to limit Jewish religious rights, though Historians are not sure if this true (it may have been about taxes and other areas of authority.) Well there was a rebellion in 167 BC and the internal Jewish Warriors succeeded from the Seleucid Empire (The Maccabees Rebellion.) Well the rebellion was successful and they were independent for 130 years (though lots of civil wars for authority) and only in the end succumb to the Romans except the Jewish People saw the Romans at first as liberators for they still feared various Greek / Hellenistic empires and the Jewish People thought he romans were better.

TLDR: Cyclic thinking and Creation from Something / Chaos was actually the norm in monotheism, only during the Hellenistic (Greek Influenced) / Roman Era did this shift to Creation out of Nothing (Ex Nihilo) instead of Creation out of Chaos. But yeah read the article I linked to.

Yes, but this research (even though similar research occurred prior) is about "guided therapy" where the therapist is trying to specifically trigger a memory but also help the patient figure out new coping strategies and turning those new coping strategies into habits so the automatic anxiety induced habit is not the only coping mechanism.

Taking a dose of propranolol prior to a stressful situation is a different type of environment with different goals for how will interact with the environment.

This is not new research for we had replication research of the connection with specific Beta receptors in the amygdala and the hippocampus in 2004 with fear and Yadda, Yadda, Yadda... with prior breakthrough research happening even earlier. But there are so many interactions with so many systems that research after 2004 is about learning the "best practices and best applications" of how to treat patients. Science and Medicine is a continuous undertaken process. This researcher M Soeter has a dozen important scientific papers on the detail of this process from 2009 to 2018.

I do not know if he was on drugs during the twitter thing (most recent 420), but Elon Musk in the last year (only in the last year) has been upfront about his trauma with his parent divorced and his father who was messed up and did not have anything close to a traditional parenting methods let alone boundaries with his children.

Elon Musk has trauma, and it really shows on his personality. Everyone "loves" his innovator / save the world complex, but put another spin on it and it reaks of an "Atlas Personality / Complex" where you were forced to grow up too fast and you feel the whole world is on your shoulders (you must save it.)
