We are in the same boat, but guess where I have the phone number for enterprise support? Webmail on our domain. Lesson learned.

The other thing this article really fails to highlight is the DDOS mitigation service Cloudflare provides.

Cloudflare are disrupting a very established and lucrative industry. Companies like Prolexic charge a lot more for a lot less. Not to mention the whole "Are you currently under attack?" bullshit they pull where they charge you significantly more if you are currently a DDOS victim.

I wonder if everyone is missing a piece of the Cloudflare pricing puzzle.

What if they have negotiated contracts with wholesale data providers where they get a revenue share for any traffic they bring into the network? This would mean that the more sites they have hosted, the more money they bring in for their carrier (which they bill the downstream for) and in turn, the more they make.

I dont not work for Cloudflare and have never worked in the carrier/hosting biz, so this is just a theory. I am however, a very happy enterprise customer.

While I don't know all the details, it looks as if Groupon has gone about this the wrong way.

auDA have a very clear stance against this kind of squatting (from http://www.auda.org.au/policies/auda-2010-05/);

a. Applicable Disputes. You are required to submit to a mandatory administrative proceeding in the event that a third party (a "complainant") asserts to the applicable Provider, in compliance with the Rules of Procedure that:

(i) your domain name is identical or confusingly similar to a name [Note 1], trademark or service mark in which the complainant has rights; and

(ii) you have no rights or legitimate interests in respect of the domain name [Note 2]; and

(iii) your domain name has been registered or subsequently used in bad faith.

I also forgot to mention in my earlier reply the one thing you should DEFIANTLY not do: pay an attacker to stop.

I often hear of attacks that are accompanied by an email demanding thousands of dollars via Western Union.

Attackers like this pray on small, non-technical businesses (eg blogs, small retailers) who often feel they have no option but to pay the ransom.

Guess what happens when you pay for the attack to stop? The attack stops, only to start again in 8 weeks time with a new, higher ransom email.

Most clients participating in DDoS attacks are plain dumb.

They will continually perform a GET request on a single page and not parse the response. This means they wont respond to javascript, images, cookies or redirects correctly.

You can devise a test that identifies attacking clients and then blacklist the IP addresses for a while.

While I'm sure this strategy isn't perfect, it has been sufficient for the two attacks I have been subjected to.

Sun kind of did this in 1999 with the Sun Ray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Ray)

This enables another notable feature of the Sun Ray, portable sessions: a user can go from one Sun Ray to another and continue their work without closing any programs. With a smartcard, all the user has to do is slip in the card, enter their password when prompted, and they will be presented with their session.
