I feel like taking Google’s commitment to something seriously is one of this things that I can very uncontroversially respond to with “is this your first day?”

All but the biggest Google fanboys know that Google is incredibly indecisive and will cut plans at a moment’s notice.

2 years before it was VR, few years before that NFTs and blockchain everything

Are you so deep in the SV tech echo chamber that you can’t distinguish between tech bro / snake oil salesman hype and something that actual normal people are engaged by?

The only people talking about NFTs in a non-disparaging way were delusional in large part because they themselves bought into it wanted to egg others on. NFTs were just a stupid faddish speculative ‘commodity’ market. It’s a completely different thing.

Ditto with “blockchain”. That well was positioned by people trying to make money from cryptocurrencies. The mechanics allowed for that. Again, it’s a completely different thing. Civilians with no vested interest weren’t sitting in restaurants singing the praises of decentralised ledgers or monkey pictures on someone’s Google Drive. I assure you. I also assure you that this IS however happening with ChatGPT. Out here in the real world, we see it.

This doesn’t mean that there aren’t issues with LLMs, both philosophically and in therms of their actual output. This doesn’t mean there aren’t the same old SV snake oil salespeople and YouTube wannabes trying to push some BS products and courses. But let’s not pretend for a second like this is usefully comparable to “blockchain” and “NFTs”.

No they don’t. That’s untrue. The fact that so many replies are speaking as if it’s true is quite telling. Instagram continually pesters me to create a Threads account, but doesn’t just “make one for me”. Threads’ user growth would look very very different if this were true. It’s another app. Instagram won’t even let you expand one of the stupid Threads posts it shows you until you install the app.

This is dripping with personal bias. Bluesky gets the stamp of being a “tool”. It can be just as much of a mind-numbing fuckaround as Threads. Most replies in this thread are just starting from “Bluesky is where my people are” and trying to turn it into something self-righteous. Why are HN users so afraid of admitting that they’re dumb humans like everyone else? Christ.

Huh? In service of what? There’s not all that much inherently good about backwards compatibility, but you’re really implying that deprioritising it is a misdeed. If I wanted to use an OS that prioritised backwards compatibility more than macOS, I’d use Windows, and suffer through the downsides of that trade-off. I’m happy using an OS that balances things in a way that’s more in line with my priorities.

I’m glad that you didn’t waste effort saying “I am not a lawyer” here, because it’s very very apparent that you aren’t.

Today Jones tomorrow someone you follow in the media.

Christ. As a non-American, this comment says a lot about the hilariously broken state of your political landscape.

“It could happen to one of your guys, and that somehow makes it bad!”

Anyone that does what Alex did deserves his punishment, and I’d be against anyone that did what he did, even if I previously “followed” them.

I’m sick to death of everything being described as “opinions that challenge one’s worldview”. There are opinions and there are opinions. There are also philosophical differences of opinion vs things that blatantly factually untrue. Remember “alternative facts”? from the last US election? That was a thing that someone legitimately said in response to specific tangible factually incorrect statements being made about the nature of election fraud. Not wanting to be exposed to content from a news organisation that so aggressively promotes this “worldview” is not the same thing as being a thin-skinned snowflake that only wants to consume content that doesn’t challenge them.

The notion that I’m meant to ingest some unfiltered firehose of utter garbage because of some incorrect notion of “all opinions are equally valid” is complete and utter bullshit.

I’d understand it as an inherent consequence of a socialised healthcare system and, because this isn’t my first day, know that policing for the purpose of reducing socialised healthcare burden is ultimately nonsensical and futile because there’s simply no appropriately place to ‘draw the line’.

If you aren’t for paying to remedy behaviour that someone considers ‘reckless’ then you don’t truly believe in socialised healthcare, because everyone has a different idea of “reckless”, and beyond that, socialised healthcare that doesn’t cover people living life to its fullest isn’t really socialised healthcare.

All you’re really doing is having realisation about your true political leanings. This really has nothing to do with the original topic.

“LLMs aren’t a path to AGI” is, like all theories about the progression of AI, at its core based on the philosophical musings of the subset of computer nerds that are unjustifiably confident enough to think that their area of expertise extends to something that truly nobody on the face of this earth is even close to understanding. OpenAI has just as much of an idea as the knowitall HN naysayers, which is to say ‘no idea at all’.

unfortunately, these words, as well as "nazi" and "fascist" have been misused, abused, and overused to the point of utter uselessness.

Yep. The ‘Twitter Left’ (pejorative) royally shit the bed with this one. Their unbridled vitriol contributed heavily to the overall ‘no words mean anything anymore’ nature of US politics. It’s really the primary way that the Left contributed to the whole phenomenon.

Dare point out that something someone did isn’t actually ‘fascist’, and dare suggest that the implication only serves to muddy the waters, and you’ll be chastised by someone that in all likelihood isn’t as much of a ‘radical leftist’ as you in any meaningful way.

I hope the loud kids are happy with where we’ve ended up. Evidently so, because it’s only gotten worse.

You’re kinda implying that Old Party is essentially bad in a way that New Party won’t become. That’s not how things work at all. A party is just a collection of people. They don’t go away. The system that got them there doesn’t go away.

I feel like a broken record, but God, Americans need only look beyond their own borders for just a SECOND to see real-world examples of almost every other ‘hypothetical’ posed by all the armchair political scientists in this thread.
