If you repeatedly harvest crops from soil without working on building it, this is what happens. Each crop progressively removes some nutrients from the soil with the result that the soil nutrients, and nutrients in the derived food gradually decay. Most petroleum/chemically derived fertilizers do not replace such. It is a known phenomena organic farming circles. Organizations like Rodale institute are working to correct this my improving soil health - but in general we’re been on a long program of “withdrawing money from the bank account without paying in”.
It's beyond dumb and currently all stick and no carrot. By that I mean - at least in CA - a huge state bureaucracy including visual inspections that essentially precludes any real modifications to vehicles - unless you see a referee in which case it is a crapshoot on approval. We would IMO be better served by larger tax incentives on electric, and reduce the CARB bureaucracy enormously - insist on a simple tailpipe test "as it blows". Ridiculous standards have effectively forced small, high compression, often turbo charged, engines on consumers which run extremely hot (observe the heat shielding on newer subarus intended to prevent the engine mounts from burning out). Such engines, while fuel efficient, will never last the 300k miles we saw previously, without extensive messing with - by that I mean engine pulling, gasket full gasket and ring replacement type operations. If you want longevity, the older style toyota, lower compression, engines - which run cool and are marginally less fuel efficient (available in most other places in the world) will last in the 1m mile range.
Came here to say this. If you had a super long, very sensitive, trunk with a huge bee attracting hole at one end that bees could fly into and then sting inside, you'd be scared of them too .....

What you are referring to is a "screened bottom board" in langstroth (modern box) hive beekeeping terminology. Mites fall out of it when bees groom (if kept clean) and cannot return as they can only climb a certain distance (6" is what is generally held as being this distance). However, modern hives have other issues which may be more or less prevalent in different locations and some have argued they were primarily designed for honey production, not honeybee health. In my location, which gets quite cold in winter, the thin walls of langstroth hives have undesirable properties - being too thin to provide insulation, they get cold and then transpiration from the bees condenses as moisture on the inside of the hive, leading to mold. Other people see other problems - no hive design is perfect in all locations - many different location specific designs existed in antiquity, from the clay tubes of the Egyptians to the skeps of the English beekeeping and everything in between. I do note that in the wild, honeybees select a wide range of places in which to live, but seem (to many) to prefer hollow trees. Organization like boomtree bees and gaiabees encourage this preference by providing log type hives and report good results as well as evolved resistance to the varroa destructor, the parasitic mite to which you refer.

Homesteading itself is a full time job. There are almost always things which need to get done - fencing, fire clearance, animal issues, gopher trapping, tree pruning - and wups, a fox got in the chickens last night. Etc. One of you is gonna need to be full time in this and it is still a lot, and probably you will end up paying people to do stuff for you anyhow if you can’t find time to do it. Not saying it isn’t possible - we kinda do it - but you want a fully committed other person with skills not just “oh that sounds nice”. Considering volunteering at something like an urban farm to get said skills before committing.
The current proposed sample size is small in comparison to the required waste storage lifetime ….

Will be noisy. You can pull the board and put it in a desktop case with desktop fans, but unmodified even in a garage the strongly forced airflow in a 1u compute server sounds like an aircraft taking off.
While it does sound like you are burned out, I lived in London for 6 years and hated it - I left as soon as I completed my Ph.D. - it's not a good spot if you are not a city person. My suggestion is to look at remote work, take a pay cut if necessary, and work from where you want to live, at least for a while. Just because you have a Ph.D. this does not mean you have to live in the middle of a large city. Use the money from that job as a vehicle to develop a small, focused piece of software that solves a problem, preferably somewhat related to your Ph.D. work. Get a business person involved in this early to validate the concept, so you sure you are not making something you can't sell, and start selling it. Two outcomes - either you make money (in which case fine) or you don't, and have something to point at showing that you can be self-starting - and then look for a job related to that. Do be rigorous though, and finish what you start (ALWAYS finish what you start). You could begin by doing some focused research to aid in deciding what field you think your academic background confers an advantage in (and is not fintech :))
I grew up on the east coast of the uk. When I was a kid in the 70’s my brother and I would catch huge cod right off the beach with beachcaster rods. Now he tells me there are no big fish left, only small ones, and few of those come in. He doesn’t bother fishing anymore. IMO the time for taking fish is done - we need to leave the ocean alone and let it heal. Also, we clearly have a population boom based on over exploitation of natural resources. Fish - depleted, topsoil - in bad shape, bees - in bad shape. Typical natural world bubble of a species that ate all of the available prey.
Also, on a personal opinion, I don't believe Singleton, or not in the main. Yoga is such a vast domain, super-setting normal human existence, and many things have likely been practiced and not documented over the years. I think we all need to look closely at cultural and particularly (if we are western) western biases here when dealing with this subject. Cultural appropriation is a real issue in yoga.
Singleton agrees that yoga poses as described in the material referenced by the OP here were existent far back, and that traditionally, yoga was considered far "more" than just physical poses (asana), as is evidenced by patajali, numerous historical references, the 8 limbs of yoga, etc. What he supposes, more controversially, is that more recent forms of physical asana, such those based as mysore style ashtanga yoga, were not evidenced in the original material he consulted and were subsequently added, though of course it must be said that much of this material was at least gathered, if not authored, though a colonial lens. (It must also be said that the traditional Indian method of writing on what are basically dried leaves has not done history any favors here) Therefore he assumes that those particular physical asanas (things like sun salutations, vigorous vinyasa practice, etc) were not in existence prior to the injection of more western forms such as calisthenics. He has no issue with the older material. Whether or not you believe his other main assertion is I think based on your experience with yoga, cultural appropriation, time spent in India, and related other matters. The irony of course is that, if you believe him, is that the "feel good do no good" part of yoga was added from western material and then re-exported back to west, where it because the predominant form almost to the exclusion of the others. Certainly from my experience of being in India and practicing various forms of yoga here and here, I can say that there are many forms of yoga existent in India which largely do not equate to the westernized versions primarily practiced in yoga studios here.

I did my Ph.D. thesis on a Sun 4/110 connected to a VME transputer board and from there into a larger transputer array, using T-800s. Amazing and way ahead of the times - what really killed things was a combination of the removal of financial support by the UK Govt, and also an unexpected increase in the clock frequency of single core CPUs, rendering anything which was not on the latest process out of date. Then the UK went into recession, and many good people left. Some went to the west coast US, other took teaching positions in places like Australia. I do always wonder what could have become of the UK computer industry in the early 90's had it been appropriately funded at the right time (via something like DARPA). But instead, the concentration went into turning London into a financial hub.

Right answer here. I am pretty excited about a passively cooled device power efficient device that performs on-par, or better than, a 3-year-old, super heavy, gamer laptop like an Alienware r2/3. Those machines are still capable of running relatively impressive PC-VR, way ahead of what we see today in the standalone Oculus Quest2. Stick one (or preferably 2) of these things in a VR headset please Apple.
I have a Ph.D. It has continued to open doors for 30+ years after graduation and has allowed considerable flexibility in my career - I have taken breaks and returned and been welcomed, several times. In 10 years time, having worked at google, you will just be another guy who worked at google. Wouldn’t you prefer to be a Ph.D. who also worked at google? Also: choose your supervisor very carefully. Spend time talking to his/her graduate students. The right supervisor makes all the difference in the world.
P.S. or you could just have a go at solving homelessness in silicon valley :)
Honestly I suggest just spending it. A yacht, fractional jet, a couple of mcclarens, maybe some investment in space technology, etc. Seems like most fortunes I have seen don’t withstand this level of spending. In 7 or 8 years you could completely have your motivation back :)
That thing was very clearly a hybrid - SGI's graphics stuff glommed force-ably onto NT. I remember trying to get PC code to work on it and basic stuff definitely didn't work. Probably it worked better the other way around (SGI app -> visual workstation NT). I never tried that though.
