I don’t get the charger whining from people. If you add the price of the charger and the wired earphones to the price of the phone then with inflation it’s cheaper than the handsets were in 2018.

I’ve got 7 Apple chargers here as well. This is a completely rational decision which is transitional while we all move to USB-C slowly.

Your general point is right but it’s not the state of the company you need to look at but the direction they are travelling and Apple appears to be heading in the least wrong direction.

That’s even worse. File system performance is so terrible that it’s unusable for anything past trivial operations. AFAIK it maps the Linux ABI/syscalls to NT and that’s it. So you get the dire small file performance of NTFS to contend with (MFT locking).

Wherever you go there are puddles of this ick to stand in.

Grass is not greener on the windows and WSL side. It’s yellowed and littered with turds to stand in. I run both platforms side by side and the Mac is by far the least painful. Windows 10 on an average day is like gargling sand. I mean for two months now alt-tab is broken on 20H2 release. No fix incoming yet. Zero days unpatched for 90 days etc. On WSL it’s a networking and HyperV encrusted nightmare. Have fun trying to get anything vaguely complicated to do anything even remotely sane. Total shit show.

A fine comparison is the windows App Store which is genuinely like playing Russian roulette with a gun made of butter. The Mac App Store is much much much less crazy.

The Mac has its fair share of suck but my word at least they actually tried to put something cohesive together.

Going to put it honestly but I don’t think Microsoft are earning my respect or attention, just shouting about how wonderful their product is while it’s falling to pieces in my hands.

Alt+tab has been thoroughly broken on Windows 10 20H2 for over two months now. It randomly switches between the second and third window. No fix in customer facing versions yet either.

They are slow and incompetent.

There are a lot of religious followers of the one true AWS way of thinking. I dared bitch too loudly about SES delivery policy once and said to look elsewhere and earned the ire of the architectural elite.

This is insane because I'm certified too but a non believer, a concept which does not compute for a lot of people.

Problem with investors is that they pay third parties to do audits and third parties are filled with box tickers who ask a load of questions. You can strategically answer any question. So the game becomes how to answer the audit questions effectively rather than an honest appraisal of the situation.

Also it's not really fun. It's a frustration ridden shit show. You spend all day solving complex problems instead of building business value.

A fine example of where the tradeoff ends is spending three weeks solving fundamental networking issues due to stack complexity and immaturity.

What I find frustrating is that if you are in a high stake environment it’s increasingly fashion driven too. I am in one of those environments where we can get prosecuted, big time. I tend to opt for a conservative engineering approach with maturity and security considerations being a key part of the design process.

But no, fuck that, someone went to a conference, bought everything shiny and started a death-march of throwing any old hacked up shit and containers from random joes in a limping kubernetes cluster that no one really understand and calling it a success.

That’s reality in 2020 unfortunately. I don’t sleep very well these days.

I get the feeling those issues are over on the Mac now. Over the years I’ve had issues that are shockingly similar to my PC stuff on the Mac. I have concluded this is possibly the underlying architecture complexity. Most of the PC architecture that is shared is a massive stack of sticky tape and string piled up over the last 20 years and I think that leaks out into the OS. I’m surprised it works for any vendors at all. It’s not as if Linux doesn’t have a ton of problems in that space either.

The only thing I can say is that with the M1 Mac mini I have it’s the only computer I haven’t found any issues with at all yet and I’ve been using it since November 26th 100% of the time. Absolutely no issues at all.

Now windows is mostly reliable from the hardware side of things I’d you are lucky but the software is broken as fuck. Nothing works reliably or consistently. For over a month now Alt-tab on 20H2 has been randomly changing window ordering as an example breaking over 20 years of muscle memory. Their own mail client stops receiving mail twenty times a day. I’m not even going to start the book-sized rant on how unreliable their development stack is. And yesterday I spent an hour trying to delete a file which wouldn’t go away. It’s just motivational poison at the end of the day. Death by a thousand paper cuts.

I just spent all week on an 8gb mini with slack and about 50 JIRA tabs open. Works fine.

Yeah this is why I spent my saved ryzen money on a Mac mini. And found out it was good enough!

True and I certainly agree with that side of things.

The one that makes me laugh is the people who get on the bus and then put their mask on.

I think the problem is that people don’t want to enforce it because 1 in 50 people you try this on are likely to go batshit insane almost instantly. No one wants to deal with that.

At the end of the day this whole thing is dependent on the weakest link and there are a lot of weak links in society.
