Thanks for the reply and the example. When I used to watch anime I always sped through it wanting to get to the story/action. I had assumed people combing through frame by frame were just looking for excuses to label it as AI. But now I can appreciate doing it for a lovingly-crafted anime to savor the details, and being disappointed when the they're not there or hallucinated/inconsistent due to AI. It's the same reason I avoid any music that is AI-generated, despite being fooled at a cursory listen. I don't want to waste my time if I dive in deeper and find out there's nothing there.

My in-laws from China are visiting and now they're both watching these AI-generated micro-dramas. Lots of weird shiny people with perfect faces and bodies, and overly dramatic yelling/crying. Much worse quality than the anime clips featured in this post. They know it's AI and don't care. I'm afraid that if the majority of people reward slop, that's what everyone's going to get.

I tried this for a while. My local subs have been taken over by ideologues and the niche subs still get political/outrage bait flare-ups regularly. I've decided that the best way to consume reddit is through an intermediary, whether it's Google or an LLM that I ask to crawl through subs for recent posts, remove emotional/political content, and summarize for me. Ironically that's exactly what Reddit is trying to prevent, but when push comes to shove I'm happy to miss out on the 5% of useful stuff rather than have to wade through the memes, outrage, and bots.

I watched the whole thing and didn’t notice anything off, other than soup moving a bit weirdly. But if no one had told me it was AI, then I’d think that’s just the animation style. Then I read the list of tells and oh ok, now I can see a little of it if I pause at just the right time and replay it a few times. But who watches anime like that? I think it’s good enough for the vast majority of people, who would enjoy it at first, then later find out it’s AI, and hate it because that’s the cool thing to do.

Every layer in the org chart gradually got replaced by people who single-mindedly optimized for their own careers. How do you optimize your career at data-driven, results-oriented, “measurable performance goals” big tech? You make revenue go up in a 3-6 month time horizon.

For example, Oracle does evil to its customers and partners and competitors. But Google does evil to every human who uses their products. In my book that’s much worse.

For fun, I took that image and put it into a few models and asked it "what is wrong with this genAI image?"

Grok fast came up with a lot of minor quibbles and missed the issue.

Grok expert touched on it with a "Limbs/anatomy ambiguity / This creates a slight "how many legs does this cat actually have?" moment." but then moved on to complain about texturing . Later it summarized the issue as "classic "animal + held object" anatomy problem".

That backlash was nearly entirely on that other social media website that HN hates being compared to. And yet again, not representative of actual people. The xbox part may be true. I’d be extremely surprised if any PlayStation users in volume move to PC, that might be another loud opinion from that crowd due to the physical disc outrage. They would pay twice as much, have a less seamless experience, and still have worse graphics/performance.

I say this as a primarily pc gamer. It’s not for most people.

What you said is a more substantive argument than the lazy “Nazi salute, end of story” that somehow doesn’t get shot down enough here.

The fact that people like you are still pushing the subjective salute thing as incontrovertible fact makes it hard to find any common ground. Serious people in the media, even the ones heavily biased against Elon, don’t harp on it the way online people do.

Sounds good to me, similar quality to other ones I've heard and there's real intelligence behind it, unlike Siri. I look forward to when I can try them out in my car. Grok is already helping to answer the never-ending, progressively harder questions my older kid has started to ask during long car rides.

I’ve given up trying to convince people about any of this. You will be accused of some -isms at best. So I just quietly use demographic information to pick where to live and where to send my kids to school. And try to be sympathetic when my friends complain about being impacted by crime.

I like everything about the Moonlander (ortholinear, split) except for the lack of F keys. From what I can tell, Kinesis is the other side of the "ortholinear or F keys" tradeoff, holding most everything else constant.

I use a Moonlander and regret it entirely for this reason. It would be perfect if it just had that extra row of F keys. I know there are a million ways to compensate for it but they all involve tradeoffs that I don't want to make.

I stopped working a day job that requires typing, so I can deal with the inconvenience, but my god I wish I didn't listen to the people who pooh-poohed away the lack of F keys. Not having the keys present and labeled adds all this cognitive overload when having to remember which magic combo changes layers and which keys are the F keys, while switching between windows/macOS/linux. Have to hit F2 to boot into BIOS? Good luck hitting the magic incantation in time before you miss your window of opportunity, when the keyboard doesn't show which layer you're in because it just powered up.

I like the tactile feel of it, the build quality, the ortholinear layout, and the customizability, but at this point I'd trade off the customizability for that extra row and labeled modifier keys.

I wasn't banned from the whole site but I definitely was perma-banned from the local subreddit. That's how reddit works. Moderators get to moderate as they see fit, and short of some egregious terms of service violations, reddit admins won't interfere.

I got banned from my local subreddit for saying “as an Asian we actually tend to like cars from this brand” in a politically charged post about a certain car brand. Didn’t seem very spicy to me. “If you support this brand you’re supporting Nazis” was allowed and upvoted, of course.

On the bright side that was the impetus for me to finally stop giving my valuable attention to that site.

This is a good solution. I have invidious running on my home server, and my phone is permanently WireGuard’d to my home network. Front end is completely configurable. No ads, no suggested videos, no comments. There’s even a download video button.

Nice. My kids are still at the stage where they can only request specific objects and colors but I can’t wait to gradually involve them more and more in the process of model design, slicing, and printing.

There are valid concerns with 3d printing guns but I expect adults to be able to let kids be kids when it comes to something like a Star Wars figurine.

I tried using the official steam client on my TV (running some google/android TV OS) which was hard-wired in (100 Mbps) which should be sufficient for 1080p/60 if not 4K/60 but there is some android TV bug that adds an unacceptable audio lag. It's not so bad here in Orange County. City/county politics are more balanced and provide pretty good counterweights to the state party. It's much better than the Seattle area, which truly has uniparty rule and it shows. People are less civil and tolerant there, crime and schools are worse, quality of life is lower.

I agree with the parent comment though. MS just doesn't have meaningful competition for Windows and Office, and the terrible software quality/experience is what we get.
