Love mailcow I moved off exchange to mailcow. I’ve used email for I guess 30 years now and every year it’s less reliable. My kids do not use email at all , they are on the internet with out actually using email. Sure they have a google account for YouTube but their services tend to allow a sign up with out an email. I can see a future where it continues to be less of a thing and turn into something held on by older people.

I’m never liked oatmeal generally prepared in the US. Then I flew to Australia and on quantas they served Muesli which is essentially rolled oats and milk with fruit which was delicious. So it turns out I liked oatmeal just not cooked down into mush. In the states I found bobs red mill which is my standard choice and I get the gluten free one not because I am avoiding gluten it just tastes better than their regular one.
2-3 years ago in a support role I would get requests about domains masked cloudflare pointing to someone’s site. So the other domain would show the content of the other site and be masked by cloudflare. Dumping all the $server variables would pinpoint better where it was coming from and it could be blocked.
IPO and restating earnings might have covered the tracks.
This is unrelated to cash and to comply with certain strict privacy laws in certain EU countries. At the start it won’t be offered everywhere.
Rite aid is filing for bankruptcy and closing stores. Target sold off their in store pharmacies to cvs. Most of the mom and pop pharmacy’s near me are closed or a Walgreens or cvs now and Amazon is starting to get into the game.
All these can be the wrong assumptions for sure. Working in a space with some fraud though I can tell you the majority of users verify fine and there ate only the few percentage that don’t for any number of reasons some what you have given above. For smaller vendors though things to consider are
- a charge back can come up to 6 months later. A loss of that is not only a loss of funds but a charge back fee
- too many charge backs could affect the merchant account with the potential of a loss of being able to run your business and this can extend to PayPal or anything merchants run charges through.
- Fees may go up like interchange fees on running credit cards if an account is deemed higher risk.
- blacklisting from visa or Mastercard or merchant accounts in general is not unheard of. Loosing access to running credit cards would be the end of many businesses.
So mom and pop shops need to be aware of fraud and ensure it is low or taken care of. You can’t just accept every order and hope for the best. Fraud does exists and when only a few percentage of users meet your list of incorrect fraud assumptions it’s easy to see why they are used at least for extra verification.
One good thing for merchants for those who accept crypto like Bitcoin is all the risk moves to the sender not the merchant. There are no charge backs - so merchants who take crypto should be able to be a bit more lenient on payments and verification.
Thanks for all the contributions @cperciva. FreeBSD update doesn’t get talked about much but going from having to rebuild FreeBSD for updates from source to binary updates has been incredibly useful.
Yes this would be easy and I would expect on most providers it could be done using a snapshot with out affecting the live system for a basic system install unless the file system was encrypted.
This would be similar to spam and blocklists. I know people have tried to sue blocklists (maps and spamhaus) but from memory they were not successful in the end. That included blocking email , sometimes with larger blocks with ip ranges not directly involved but in a similar range. Malware being flagged on an anti virus would be similar but in those case the user has an option to exclude the block. Google and Firefox block domains for phishing regularly as well.
That’s rough but who’s crying any tears here. Melt it down for the gold or hopefully it was kept in the box unopened to sell in the next 20 years
I can see Facebook the service not existing by then for sure. Facebook does have cash and a brief search shows about 54 billion in cash to 19 billion debt. So give or take there is a pile of 30 billion which if generating even 3.3 % on their cash that will be around a billion a year. One smart investment every 5-10 years would be enough to stay around.
The first security program I remember when I started playing with Linux around 99 was called libsafe which used ld preload to intercept calls on the fly to prevent buffer overflows.
One and done. One you type it would you can use zfs list|status from there. There is nothing wrong using sda and sdb but if you need to replace a drive In the future it’s just easier with the by-id label.
Like spam email these phishing scams evolve. Something like amaz0n generally comes from amazon in the domain being blocked since not all domains can realistically be checked during the order. The phishing check need to continually evolve and there will always be false positives blocking legitimate sites. Bank is a common one that gets blocked so a domain like embankment - or you want to block cialis because of pharmaceutical and it blocks specialist - these may not pass phishing checks and be order stopping.
Godaddy probably can do more and be closer to other country level registrars that more closely require some type of id or business registration to complete the order but fraudsters will still try and some will succeed in getting phishing domains created.
My auto investment is in vanguard which is the bulk of it and I have Robinhood for random day trading. I’ve never needed to call or needed support from either. I trust vanguard more but Robinhoods mobile app is better than vanguard. Both have their purpose.
Brand protection may be one reason. Branding with a supplier who messes up in the coffee bean arena would hurt their reputation. Some business will throw ideas out and see what fits and maybe get a second really good product. Getting another product and being successful is hard enough which is why you see larger companies buying out others. It’s easier to buy and get a successful product from and existing than branching out and hitting another success.
I liked stackpath cdn as an alternative to cloudflare. Years ago I used incapsula which was bought out and the renewal rates were much higher. I looked into fastly which had no prices listed which I dislike and stackpath I could spin up on my own with the price there. I guess the writing was on the wall as live chat was discontinued with stackpath and they never were able to resolve being blocked in China which cloudflare has no issues with. I have no issues with cloudflare but have wanted a second alternative in case they are down. I still use stackpath dns and waf but their email makes it seem like they really want to focus on vps and edge cloud not cdn, waf - essentially all their purchases in the last 10 years. I am not confident the waf will be discontinued going forward.
Surprisingly I have one from 2008 (fridigare) I just unplugged because it’s listed on the 2016 site https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2017/Gree-Reannounces-Dehumidif... so people should check the latest and earlier recalls.
I don’t fertilize or water my lawn. It has grass and a mix of wild flowers, clover, mint and moss where there is not much sun. When the mint and clover flower it is full of bees. At night I have lightning bugs. Getting the perfect grass is over rated.
It is a lot and I certainly won’t pay that much but I also understand a bit. That was a price I would pay for a pc many years ago, which was my primary entertainment device , and phones have become primary devices for many people. Add in tv/music/authentication/work/email/communication fairly long term support and ability to resell it with decent value I am not judging too harshly.
New Jersey is planning wind farms so that number should continue to rise over time. I grew up in New England but moved out many years ago. I remember wind farms off cape cod being extremely NIMBY and the argument was cape cod is unique and a wind farm should be else where - essentially I assume the argument of anyone living near an area that is going to get a wind farm. These are probably one of the more expensive areas of the state due to being by the water.
I never understood shorting because the losses are potentially unlimited. Much easier to buy with out leverage and hold as your losses are only what has already been paid.
I hopped on the comment on peak oil because it was something that I had not heard in long time and I remember the discussion being so out of left field that an alternative idea was never brought up - and it was done under a capitalistic economic model based on supply and demand. I’m not saying we should look at all predictions as potentially wrong. I personally believe in reducing consumption especially along the food chain like a reduction in meat and other animal products as well as ensuring seafood is done sustainably.
Disney vault used to be a thing were movies were pulled and cycled later. Might be a combination of low sales and gearing up to go back to the Disney cycle wheel. My very quick search shows dvd sales down over 86% since 2008. It would appear everyone saying they are back on physical media here are outliers.
I’m skeptical that when the next generation takes over there will be a huge change. It easy to blame boomers but it doesn’t appear there is a huge appetite for a reduction in carbon footprint that would include significantly less travel on airplanes, less energy usage and diet changes for reducing meat consumption.
As a 90s kid a remember peak oil. It was taught every where except in one class - economics. The teacher was adamant we would never run out of oil because as the supply dwindled the cost would go up and new oil or other forms of energy would be found. Makes perfect sense now but at the time this was not the norm. Economics ended up being my favorite class. Slightly related he also predicted the internet bubble collapse as I was explaining how I as a teenager was making money on the internet doing nothing in 99 - and his response was that will end because you don’t get money for nothing forever.
Not OP but I suspect some comes from what I would view as the ability to first add solar to where there is existing infrastructure like parking lots, roofs, telephone poles etc. These areas are already built out and adding solar on top of it doesn’t take over an untouched eco system. Deserts are not voids of nothing ness and there is already a vast impact on the environment already.
I used to see news stories with tweets in it. I can’t recall many recently except for musks tweets. While the choices seem questionable Twitter is constantly in the news and getting talked about. If any publicity is good publicity Musk has certainly been able to continually be part of the news cycle.
Chavez approval ratings could be tied to oil prices and declining poverty rates. As long as oil prices were high approval ratings followed. It worked until the collapse of oil prices.
