I didn't know what gnote was, and when I was reading that I thought he was trying to say that it was a Mono/C# app. My impression of what he was saying -- which it turns out is probably way off -- was that Mono/C# in the hands of seasoned developers takes just as long to write code as bare c/c++ (much in the way that unseasoned developers thought php was 'easy' but they were writing fast code because they were leaving out things like checking for SQL injection/etc that a seasoned developer would be looking to prevent).

Since GNote is a C++ port of a Mono/C# app I don't know what he's trying to say.

Even BEFORE you turn 18. There are cases of <18 yo kids being tried as adults for 'possessing', 'producing' or 'distributing' child pornography. Even the girl who takes the pictures of herself is not safe from this sort of legal system madness.

She doesn't need nude pictures on a 'child porn network' for something like that to happen. Plain-clothes pictures of herself on a Facebook/MySpace page the is public could be enough. So I hardly see how this makes it an offense worth destroying the rest of someone's life over.

Don't try to paint everyone with such a broad brush. I posit that in America too many people are apathetic of the legal system so only the hardcore wackos get any sort of political support on social issues such as this.

But things like 'save the children' seem to me to be a modern day form of McCarthyism. If I don't support stripping sexuality from children, then I must be a pedophile and just looking to make it legal for me to have sex with children. Or else I "just don't understand" because I'm not a parent myself and all of my views are therefore discounted as if I am not really a part of the same society or even a human being at all.

Not necessarily. I've seen some of the decisions and they don't really make sense. One of the decisions was to 'protect' the children because it was possible for someone to hack their computer, steal the images, and then distribute them -- even though no such distribution had taken place, and the only reason that images came to light is because one of their cellphones was confiscated for an unrelated reason at school. The child was 'protected' against having these images distributed by being convicted of a sex crime and having to register as a sex offender... Sometimes the lack of logic makes you want to rip your hair out. The judge with the dissenting opinion said everything that I wanted to say to the majority judges. I almost want to find him and take him out for a few beers just for performing his job reasonably.

I see this as most judges using this as a way to 'make an example' of these children so that others will think twice before engaging in such action. I also believe that they are purposefully misinterpreting the laws to do so. Or maybe they just don't want to be painted politically as not 'caring about the children' or some such nonesense that other politicians/media would paint them in such a light.

But I take it that most statutory rape happens less for economic reasons than most authorities/politicians would like us to believe. Most people that abuse/rape children do so because it has happened to them, not because they find it to be a way to make quick money.

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but Safari uses OSX's ported libraries as DLLs. If the memory size of those DLLs is being used, it would show up as less memory usage on an OSX machine due to those libraries being a shared part of the main OS.

I'm just trying to make the point that while you have fond childhood memories of long summer vacations, it doesn't necessarily mean that you would be a boring person with boring memories if you went through an education system with longer school days and less vacation time.

You would have different memories and experiences for sure, but neither you nor I can claim to know how you would have turned out were your situation different.

That average has no meaning. Are they averaging the homework loads of grades K-12? Obviously kids in higher grades will have higher workloads, while kids in kindergarten will have little to no homework.

Problem is that sometimes your neighbors are not the nicest people.

I have a bunch of issues with this post, regardless of the feasibility of micropayments.

First off, saying that people didn't go for the $0.xx/kB data plans on cellphones due to 'mental accounting' that people have when the price is <$1 is bogus. People didn't go for it because people don't have a clue how many kB the websites they visit or the email they download are. It would have been too much of a task to keep track of that information. This had nothing to do with the cost, and everything to do with the amount of micromanaging that people would have to do. In addition, people have no gauge on the amount of kB they use in a day, a week, or a month. So they have no way of knowing if this price is a deal or a rip-off. This in no way reflects on people's willingness to make a bunch of <$1 purchases against their credit card.

Second, the proliferation of prepaid credits has less to do with people getting over some mental hurdle to spending money in <$1 increments. It's the hurdle of effort. Whenever I go to a website that is selling something at <$1 prices, I possibly have to sign up, fill out a bunch of forms, pull out my credit card, etc. If this is presented in a way where the purchase is one-click (i.e. I already have credits with this seller or service) then that barrier is broken down and people are more likely to make the purchase.

The mental hurdle that people have isn't some difference between spending $0 and spending $0.01. It's the difference between not getting something and spending 5 minutes going through a process to spend $0.01 on something.

So... you're saying that the fundamental problem with Linux is that when logging in remotely from the command line it's not as easy to use as a GUI/Desktop environment?

I'd like to see you ssh into text-only Windows!

In any case, you find it hard because you don't understand it and I see no motivation on your part to spend any time trying to understand it. vi/vim is installed by default on most installs because vi has been a staple of using Unix systems for decades, it's part of the standard set of tools. And even if you just want to use it to edit text, I don't see any reason that you can't use it once you learn the basic commands: * Esc or Ctrl-C to escape from Insert Mode * i to enter Insert Mode * :q from command mode to exit

Now you can use it to edit text files. Are you so hard up for keystrokes that you can't type an extra 1 or 2 in there somewhere? Are you just on some really slow connection or something? Sometimes I really don't understand people's resistance to anything that varies even slightly from what they deem to be 'normal.' Your argument against vim comes off to me like the people that will spend hours circling a parking lot so that they can park 8 ft. closer to the entrance to a store.

How is this really related to the article though? Are you trying to say that the people moving to Portland/etc are burning through cash too quickly because they aren't living cheap enough?

Really. I find it pretty easy to use search terms like "gnu screen" or "screenrc" to get lots of results in Google...

Look at Adium (which is IM, but I don't think IRC) and Colloquy (IRC and SILC) on OSX. They output chat to XML which is then 'themed' with XSLT into HTML to display in a Webkit frame.

It sounds really convoluted, but it's presented in HTML form. and you can use images etc.

NoScript's behavior isn't the display of ads though, so AdBlock is _not_ directly messing with NoScript.

It could be that the users installed AdBlock to block the NoScript ads. In this case, NoScript is giving the finger to the users opinion.

At some point when the default behavior of two programs with similar feature-sets overlaps you just have to leave resolving them as an exercise for the user.

But targeting the other program in such a way is no different than someone installing two A/V softwares. Sure they may conflict in some areas, but if one of them silently disables or cripples the other on purpose... who is in the wrong?

Spending priorities don't just stop with TV (which is probably the least offender since they can be relatively cheap).

I could drive around neighborhoods in Detroit (as far back as pre-2000) and see a lot of people with houses that were falling apart from disrepair, but they have a decked-out car with gold rims and hydraulics in the driveway... Or the ricers that can only afford a Ford Escort, but add some huge spoiler to it... People spending mounds of money on things that don't matter that much isn't something new.

I used to work for the a casino, and as any hotel operates, the prices fluctuate based on how full we are, if it's a holiday, etc.

I would get A LOT of calls from people that would hit up the travel.yahoo.com page for our casino/hotel, see that the price was $145, and complain to me that I wasn't quoting them the price on 'your website'. I would explain over and over that travel.yahoo.com is NOT owned or operated by us, but these people would not listen. To be fair, casino patrons are not the brightest bunch...

But why is it that people are so stupid sometimes? I mean, if I put up a website that says "Larry's Business" and post a photo of "Larry's Business" and make some sort of claim about the business, why in god's name do people think that it __must__ be official? How is this any different than my writing crap on a napkin in crayon and telling them that it's the 'real deal'.
