You'd probably expect a car company with the motto "Engineering future cars" to have at least one mechanical engineer on their payroll. Expecting a company whose tagline is "Engineering future foods" to have at least one person with a background in nutrition isn't unreasonable.

Ship it and then iterate works when your product is software, not so much when it's marketed as the only food the human body needs to ingest for long periods of time. If node.js breaks then maybe some websites go down. If Soylent breaks then people could die (though hopefully they'd stop taking it before that point).

Working remotely (as absolutely amazing as it is) is only barely getting traction in some fields at this point. I generally agree with you and the ability to work remotely is incredibly important to me as far as picking a position goes but unfortunately many employers aren't as thrilled about it as I am. To varying degrees, depending on the field you're discussing, there's still the notion that you have to put in your 8 hours in the office.

Almost made this exact post... I was looking for a Photoshop clone for Mac and stumbled on Pixelmator years ago, it's definitely not as full-featured as PS but it's a fraction of the cost and it does what I need it to do 98% of the time. For $30 it's a steal, especially if they're upgrading it like this.

The word boss has a pretty specific connotation and your clients and customers aren't that. Yes, if you work for yourself you're responsible for delivering work to your customers and they have some control over you due to that but it's incredibly different from the relationship between a salaried employee and his singular supervisor.

Yeah this seems pretty worthless without separating responses by location. Living in the city you're going to walk a ton without even thinking about it, and most suburbs/rural areas are set up to make walking anywhere an 18-24 year-old would want to go difficult, if not impossible.

Is it really under the radar though? If you're aiming for TechCrunch front page then being in SF is probably a much better bet, but beyond that hype bubble you can still do very well. There are certainly talented people all over the country and of course you're going to save money on rent, salaries, and basically everything else if you go outside of San Francisco.

Not having ever founded a company I could be extremely wrong here but my take is that SF could be detrimental to certain startups.. If you have $x saved up to support you while you start a company it's going to last you much longer in basically any other city in the country other than perhaps Manhattan. At that point you basically have to decide which is going to be more of a factor in your success, extra time with which to build your product or physical proximity to an entrepreneurial community? Of course there's no one right answer, but I suspect that for many web-based startups the extra time and savings would be more important than the surrounding environment.

The lack of imagination here is just staggering. Holy cow. I mean first and foremost you're just getting a link to this directly, who's to say he doesn't also have a RESUME.DOC file that he sends out, including a link to this page?

Beyond that, I feel like this guy just might be looking for companies that are willing to take 60 seconds out of looking through a stack of nearly-identical paper resumes to indulge something a bit different. Maybe this is his way of filtering out companies who would "skip this applicant" because he didn't send in a .pdf resume with a list of buzzwords. And of course this isn't the simplest way to get across the information in a resume... that would just be a well-designed text resume. He's trying to flex his skills and show you what he's capable of, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that he understands that this is not the single most efficient way to get that information across.

You know, when you pay rent you generally receive a place to sleep and keep your things. Just because you aren't making money on it as investment doesn't mean it's a loss.

Greenwald is definitely non-partisan, and in fact he goes to great lengths to point out that the people who supported him when he reported on government abuse during the Bush administration have become some of his strongest detractors when he reports on the same things under Obama's administration. He doesn't really hide his own personal ideologies but they're certainly not loyal to any particular political party.

Healthcare is not a consumer good and people would still need it regardless of whether or not it's paid for by Medicare.

There were several obstacles to using SR, each of which would have been difficult or frightening to overcome when the alternative is doing transactions in person with cash. You needed to understand TOR (which, while not especially difficult to use in general, is harder than opening Chrome and going to Amazon), you needed to understand and obtain BTC (either mining them or purchasing them, which was generally somewhat difficult given that you couldn't use credit cards or paypal or other simple payment methods), and then you had to figure out PGP for sending your information to the vendor.

It's all definitely doable and none of it really requires much technical knowledge but there's definitely some friction that I assume would intimidate a fair amount of people.

That's the thing though. We know that as of very recently the NSA is helping other alphabet agencies construct cases in parallel. If you knew the guy's name or handle or whatever information the NSA could have given the FBI then coming up with an alternate story of how they ID'd the guy (page 24 onwards in the criminal complaint) would be incredibly easy. The point is that we'll probably never know either way.

Yeah that's brilliant, and it looks pretty great. This would probably make the whole thing much more complicated but it'd be nice if the "unused" days were invisible, and I agree that the name is a bit awkward. Beyond that though, awesome.

You're confusing "a necessary grind" with "a necessary period where your employer exploits you for longer hours with no additional pay." You can (and almost certainly will have to) pay your dues at some point in your professional life but your mistake is thinking that you shouldn't be compensated for it.

It has very little to do with being "cut out for it" and more to do with not being exploited. And yes, there's a whole host of exploitation of various degrees even in modern workplaces and many people have had or still have to go through with it but that doesn't mean it's a good thing whatsoever (unless, of course, you're the employer).

Seems like there might be an opportunity for something in the middle ground between neighborhood coffee shop and full-on coworking space.

It's a reaction against the "home ownership is doable and always a better idea than renting" sentiment that the previous generations knew to be true. The answer is probably a bit more nuanced in that sometimes ownership is great and sometimes it's a terrible idea, but I think it's just a case of the pendulum swinging the other way.

Looks like the gimmick is "too fast to follow," so when you attempt to follow them on Twitter they automatically remove you as a follower before you can show up in their follower list. I'm guessing.

I'm not super technical but I've always been skeptical of "cloud processing," especially after the Sim City debacle. Are there any scenarios where actually processing information on a server instead of on the user's home Xbox make sense, aside from things like WoW and Diablo III where you need to do the calculations on the server to make the multiplayer aspect fair?

It seems like this is targeted more at people who have a handful of smaller items that they'd like to get some cash for. If you're a power seller or running your own crafts store you'd probably not want to use Sold since they're going to take a cut anyway, and I would assume that their pricing models are designed for things like iPhones and don't work well for unique or handmade items.

If this works as described I see it as a simple way of getting some money for things you no longer need. You know that you could probably get more cash if you did all of the legwork yourself, but if you just want something gone in exchange for a few bucks then this seems like a fairly painless way to accomplish that.

Yeah, I freaked out when I initially saw it and then responded to it as well. Probably the worst possible choice for an email blast title but hey, at least they won't make that mistake ever again.
