Italy didn't ban travel early enough and their medical system couldn't keep up with the amount of people that ended up sick. The result is way more deaths and infections.

Well. through January we were going through the shampeachment, which I think many people seem to forget about. This was keeping the government busy, when they should have been thinking about ways to combat the virus.

Trump banned flights to China early on. The mainstream press called him a racist after doing this. This is probably the single best thing that prevented large amounts of people from getting infected.

I've been working from home for a decade. I've worked at many companies and been part of the hiring process for remote developers.

Most people just don't have the discipline to work remotely. I think productivity will be reduced overall and it might prevent remote working in the future.

This might work. But how many people will die in the process? There are many cases of young people, with seemingly no prior health issues, dying after getting severe issues as a result of the virus.

On top of that, you can't guarantee that young people will only get it. With no travel restrictions, it can easily spread to the elderly.

Most Junior engineers aren't working remotely. I've been working remotely for a decade with different companies and almost all of the developers on my teams have been mid-level to senior. The junior developers always struggled and had so many roadblocks, it made working remotely difficult.

It's really not that difficult to replace an in-person meeting with Webex voice call and/or screensharing. I go onsite once every 3 months for a couple of hours and it's all that's needed.

Our meetings regularly have 10+ people from different departments.

How ironic: A person railing against cancel culture gets cancelled by cancel culture.

Simply disagreeing with politically charged topics gets you a boot from many open source projects.

Many people that claim to want tolerance, actually want nothing less than exuberance for their own causes and have no problem painting people they disagree with as non-human, so they can harass, get them fired from their jobs or positions (canceling), and then finally silence.

Even if it's not illegal, basing your application on an API you can't control and may lose access to if the owner cuts you off or decides to charge you for access, is a bad idea.

I once worked for a small startup with 5 people and a boss obsessed with scrum and that only had experience in big corporations.

It was a remote development job with lots of meetings:

-1 hour standups daily -twice per week, 3 hour planning meetings on top of the daily standup -Friday we had a 'watercooler' meeting for an hour after the standup, where we were supposed to 'tell jokes' or 'share a funny story'. Since most of the developers were overseas and from different countries/cultural backgrounds, it usually ended up being very awkward. -twice/month we had a 4+ hour big-picture meeting on top of the daily standup

Sometimes, I would bill over half my weekly hours as meetings.

The strange part is that with all of these meetings, the tickets that would be assigned to me would be vague or filled with missing information. Even when I would have a 1-1 call with the boss to explain the ticket, she would talk in circles and could never give me the exact information I needed.

When I completed the ticket and didn't read her mind, things would have to be re-written.

I was eventually replaced by an overseas worker from India (the boss told me I was too expensive and she could hire someone from India for much less) and the company lost most of its investors within a few years.

Unless you're going to college for engineering, math, the sciences, or to become a doctor, college really isn't for learning.

It's for having fun and to some degree networking. If you can join a fraternity/sorority, your network will most likely get you a job right out of college.

I knew a guy that had jobs in the tech industry lined up after college for nothing more than knowing people in his frat.

He was running his own business and had very little hands-on experience and wouldn't have lasted a week at most of these jobs.

I, on the other hand, had at least 5 years of experience at that point (not to mention the decade prior to this of writing software as a hobby) and had to work pretty hard to get my first job.

Somehow, it doesn't seem fair. But it taught me that networking is equally or more important than experience and skill.

It's funny how the hobby that I had as a kid, which pretty much cost me nothing (aside from the cheap, used, laptop, I bought with my allowance) now makes me more money/year than most people that I know.

I really don't know how a bootcamp can teach you that much in 12 weeks. You might be able to cobble together a couple of react apps, but this will quickly fall apart when you run into problems/issues.
