I used to agree with this sentiment. But now I think they engage in some nasty practices, like not allowing developers to list their games on other online stores at cheaper prices. That and they take a large cut (30 percent I think) Vs epic store at 12 percent as far as I can recall.

I mostly buy from gog because they give your the download to keep for life. Also I just like them. However getting their games to work on steam deck is more time consuming than just buying from steam

I'd be happy to find out that I've been misinformed but I'm pretty certain this is all true.

My 16 year old question was recently closed because it didn't follow the rules. It just seemed really petty.

Edit: just checked it has been deleted so no longer visible to non moderators.

I doubt anyone from the UK would call their product or company "knob" these days.

I'm guessing they didn't run "knob" past anyone from the UK.

Edit: as much as it pains me, this is hacker news, so, knob means cock in the UK.

Writing structures and clarifies my thoughts, writing code did the same but for software design.

Yes AI types it all faster, but I've lost the clarity and certainty of my understanding. I am finding I'm having to read the code deeply, but reading code isn't as fun or engaging as writing it.

Technology advances and platform variation were a key part of why games where so exciting. It feels like that period is now over, it is difficult to get excited any of it now. The whole industry just seems stale and corporate. Or maybe I'm just old.

What's really odd is it is now easier than ever to create games but at the same time it feels like we won't see revolutionary games like doom, quake, Goldeneye or half life ever again. These were created by small teams that could inject their personality into them.

My other theory is game creation was previously so hard, it required genius level iq teams to do it so we quite regularly got mind blowingly amazing games. Now we get cut scenes instead.

I'm really struggling to get an agent to write code I'm happy with. It's mostly pretty awful.

I've a fairly simple c# coding style. But simple is proving a bit more difficult to convey than I thought.

I get it to produce code. I then have to spend along time convincing myself it's correct. If I don't I end up embarrassing myself when a coworker reviews it, questions it and it's obvious I don't properly understand it.

This is really starting to screw with me mentally. It's like everyone in the world is saying they can fly by flapping their arms (dark factories). When I try I just stay in the same spot burning a lot of energy.

Look, fair enough from your perspective. But a lot of those books probably wouldn't exist if the author couldn't make some money from their work.

I can't find the post but years ago on Reddit an author posted stats showing when her book turned up pirates online, real sales for it collapsed.

Because of this I make a point of buying books, programming books especially. Yes I download pdfs, I use them as previews. This has led to buying way more than I would have.

Anyway, I appreciate this doesn't apply if you live somewhere that these books can't be purchased. But everyone praising these sorts of sites tends to look at them from only a positive perspective.

I think this is going to have unintended consequences if it goes through: funding game development is a very very high risk investment. Adding this type of regulation adds further cost and complication, which makes it an even less attractive investment. Which will result in less monetary and creative risk taken.

Even just open sourcing part of project is expensive. Legal and technical.

Thanks. Did some googling too and it makes sense just one thing, what does "There is a Windows 11 LTSC version which works the same." Mean?

I'm using ltsc windows 11 and yes it is much better than one of my other pcs which has pro on it.

However I did use windows 10 ltsc for quite a few years until I hit a dll issue with an old game that turned out to be unresolvable as far as I could tell at the time. So much so I switched to pro (I have a work visual studio subscription so I have access to all versions of windows for free). I can't for the life of me remember what dll or what game it was. But I tend to play older games so probably not something many will hit the same problem.

Can anyone explain to me (a non US citizen) how this won't be found to be unconstitutional (eventually)?. I would think it falls under freedom of expression. And given the attempted classification of encryption as a munition that failed, I don't see how this can possibly last?

Just so I'm certain I understand, you think the reason Donald trump got elected is because you think the republicans want to end the world and need Israel to start the process for them? But you also think trump leveraged anti semitism too pull in another demographic?

I don't recall either of these two things being election issues.
