The unfortunate thing with mime-types, is that even though you get text/* or image/*, they are not reliable. For example, how do you ask "is this an image I can reliably put into an <img/> tag and have it successfully render?" From what I've seen, the only options are whitelists of specific content types or extensions.

Tend to surf the web and a variety of sites? How haven't you killed yourself by now?

That is definitely a good idea, but what about the patents that are so blatantly vague or obvious, that many people are unknowingly violating them. It seems it's easier to prove non-infringement rather than prior art with most software patents.
