Hackerman gave me the most impressive interaction I've had so far.

I asked it to give me a script to retheme the chat client, and it obliged. I asked it what kind of theme it would want, and here's what it said

A distributed trust network is a really interesting hard problem but does seem solvable in some ways (as seen by blockchains, though they have their own issues).

I've wondered if a somewhat simplistic graph based solution could work, inspired by organizations like medieval guilds and the mafia, where you generally need to be invited to the trust network and promoted to be more trusted within the network as others vouch for your trustworthiness. Suspicious users are highly punished (in the real life examples, often violently) and quickly removed from the network.

Obviously can be gamed like any other system, but would be much harder to do so and you can leverage the vouch/invite graph to detect trusted users that are highly connected to suspicious ones.

Surely there's something like this out there, though? Or is this just not a valuable business problem to solve?

Seems like another one (based off the article) is ease of use as well. I'm not familiar with either algorithm, but sounds like OT is less complex and easier to understand, which IMO is a decent tradeoff worth considering.

To me, the value in TDD is the same as testing in general. It's not so much for initial feature development but rather later in a project or application maintenance you see the value. I view it as amortizing the complexity over the life of the project.

Sure, it might take a bit longer to ship a simple feature, but bugs also take away from feature development, and in a complex enough application small changes might result large bugs. I guess that's true about software testing in general, but I think most developers would say there's value in having tests.

Often, the tradeoff in shipping quickly is technical debt that impacts your ability to ship quickly in the long run. I think TDD can help manage that, especially if you're planning to write tests for a feature anyway.

It does depend on what you're working on, of course, but I think most companies over-estimate their need to rapidly ship features. In the grand scheme of things adding a week to a 6 week project isn't that big a deal and might even save time in the long run.

There's hybrid cases though, where you can use automation/business logic to lower the skill floor required for some work.

That's pretty much the business model of the company I work for. We have what is essentially a call center using custom CRM/workflow software doing work that used to be done by many times more people with much more training. Instead of 5 licensed and well paid people we do the same work with one lower paid and less trained person assisted with software.

Humans are still involved to make decisions when needed and for communication, but the simple and clear stuff is automated so we can hire pretty much anyone.

It's good for our clients since we are cheaper and more efficient, but less good for the workers we're replacing who will need to find new marketable skills or fall down the ladder.

I'm of the opinion that some (not all) of this is driven by forces similar to why dollar stores are doing so well, especially as laid out in the NPR article.

Jobs Polarization is a fairly well researched and discussed topic in economics, but I'm yet to hear anything about it in the mainstream. Income inequality is a hot topic but I think this deserves more attention since it's part of that feedback loop and IMO what people feel directly.

People talk about robots stealing our jobs, but I think we've already kickstarted this process with things that produce similar effects like outsourcing. It's hard to say there's a causual relationship between the two, but disability benefit claims start rising around the same time as the recession in the early 90's.

There's an article from the National Bureau of Economic Research that suggests when firms are pressured they look to invest in automation or outsourcing. Then, when the economy recovers those jobs remain automated or outsourced, thus resulting in the 'Jobless Recoveries' we've been seeing in recent cycles.

If you're one of those people, then due to jobs polarization you're likely either looking at a lower paid job or training to find a higher paid one. Re-training has capital costs (not just money, but time and social capital to a point) that not everyone can afford.

Add in the hollowing out of many small towns and I think at least one cause of the rise in disability benefits starts to come into focus.

I don't think this is true for everyone by any means, but I do think it's a trend worth investigating. Right now, politically we're trying to tackle outsourcing, which IMO is kinda moot as automation is rising and produces similar effects.

Yep. Really the only city with a transit system on par with New York/Metro IMO is Chicago. And even then the Manhattan subway system has much better coverage than the L.

I prefer living places where I'm not reliant on owning a car, and when I was moving back to the states there were only a handful of metro areas I felt this was possible in without it being inconvenient.

Noise/smell/bugs from neighbors is awful to deal with, crummy stairwells (never an elevator), fighting for a parking spot and hauling groceries was a hassle.

That's unfortunate. One of the things I love about my apartment (Chicago) is that I've got friendly neighbors, it's well kept, there's decent parking, and I've got a deli and 2 grocery stores in walking distance.

I'm a big fan of park and rides though, esp if it connects to rail. They seem like a good compromise to help alleviate congestion from a city and work to collect from lower dense areas where there's not enough density to support rail.

And I've seen some articles/papers suggesting that protectionist policies can make sense for an emerging/developing economy to make sure that established/developed economies don't usurp that growth by blocking them from moving up the value chain.

So it may have been good policy back when America was a fledgling economy being exploited by the Brits.

You can definitely get alcohol w/o a membership. I think it might be a state-by-state thing, but in some states it’s illegal to require a membership for alcohol purchases, so you can buy alcohol even if you don’t have a Costco membership.

The food court I'm not as sure about, but in both cases I've walked into a Costco with no membership and they were fine with it.

While it's not the same, one of the best development setups I've worked with was really low tech, literally ssh-ing into commodity pc's running our app in a closet (production and staging were cloud hosted).

Because everyone was comfortable on the command like and connected via tmux sessions, we could attach to that session from any computer we brought our keys to.

We also had a couple pairing stations with one pc but two keyboard/mice and monitors so each person could take turns driving. The upshot of the tmux thing was that if we wanted to hop onto a pairing station it was as simple as taking a usb stick with your keys and then attaching to the tmux session you had at your desk.

Same went for interviews, we'd just have a candidate attach to a tmux session and we had an interactive collaborative editor.

There's some pretty obvious problems with this, but I think it's relevant since our setup used standard unix utils to achieve a modern 'pc anywhere' type setup, and if there's one thing I'll always think about when it comes to Doug Engelbart is how many of our new and shiny tools aren't really as new as we think. He really had it down with The Mother of All Demos way back in '68.

There's a couple research papers from the NBER that I think show this has been happening since the early 90's.

The graphs of for the jobless recoveries are particularly telling. One thing the authors suggest is that before the 90's after a recession we recovered the jobs that were lost due to the slowdown, but after the 90's companies could outsource or automate during the recession to deal with the economic pressures, so when the economy recovered those jobs weren't around to come back to.

And as you mentioned, we don't have any programs to bridge that gap between low and high skilled jobs. It used to be that you could work your way up, training on the job and gaining new skills. Instead we turn to formal training or education, but those have capital costs that create a barrier of entry into the higher paid labor market. If you're already working one or more low income jobs then it's not just the monetary but also the time capital required to retrain. Either you spend most of your time working and training/studying or you take the opportunity cost of quitting your job in the hopes of improving your skills to find a new one. It seems many are taking a third route of going to a doctor and getting on disability benefits, and while I can't find it I read an article a while ago where one of the doctors straight up said that they include education in the decision, seeing some people as unemployable with their level of education. I think doctors making that judgement call is it's own discussion, but just furthers the point.

I think we're only just realizing this now, but I pretty much agree with your sentiment that we're not ready to handle this. Even if we could fix the issues with cheap foreign and domestic labor that's not going to stop automation and IMO we're already in the post-automation future, just with globalization providing a similar effect.

I'm kinda interested if there's any studies that use disability benefits as a kind of natural experiment for basic income since in a way it's already a form of UBI. There's some obvious differences, but one of the assumptions of SSDI is that you're incapable of working and that's similar to one of the criticisms of UBI that it would incentivize people not to work, which could have negative social consequences. I'm sure there's something we could learn from looking at people on disability benefits about that.

It's totally different but I think Dollar General is benefiting from a similar play.

They've really doubled down on rural areas, mostly playing off of the fact that people don't want to drive long distances to stores for basics and how much cheaper they are than the competition.

Dollar General acknowledges the above, but I wonder if any of their success is related to that distortion?

I've been playing since Season 3, and there's def been some ridiculous bugs. It's gotten better over time, but the spaghetti code and 'coded as a minion' memes are still just as popular as ever. To be honest I think this is the first time I've seen someone that plays LoL not call it a buggy mess.

My personal favorites are when that update to Skarner broke Lux's ult (how are those related at all?) and when they first added the smite damage to the HUD which broke flash because the UI wasn't designed to display that data (flash's cooldown would get set to smite's damage as it's cooldown, or about 500 seconds early game).

One of their lead champion designers has even come out and said something along the lines that many champion's dashes are coded separately, even though a dash would be something pretty easy to reuse. I'm pretty sure the champion ability scripts are written by the champion designers and not formal engineers/programmer base on comments like this one and others I've seen on reddit from Riot's champion designers.

For one, there's cabotage restrictions. From wikipedia:

Cabotage rights are the right of a company from one country to trade in another country. In aviation, it is the right to operate within the domestic borders of another country. Virgin America is usually regarded as one of the better airlines, and personally I've had pretty good experiences with them. I'll pay an extra twenty dollars for the extra customer service. It would have been nice to see the company grow larger and become a threat to the big 4 (Branson himself wanted to go in that direction), but it got bought/merged with Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines has announced they are killing off the Virgin America brand sometime in 2019.

"Because I'm not American, the US Department of Transportation stipulated I take some of my shares in Virgin America as non-voting shares, reducing my influence over any takeover," Branson wrote of his powerlessness to halt the pending merger. "So there was sadly nothing I could do to stop it."

Cabotage ends up being a form of protectionism, though it's usually touted as a national security thing.

Compare this to the EU, which has some dirt cheap flights. Ryanair might suck, but I've flown from Dublin to Amsterdam for $10. The EU has less restrictions (almost none for member states, I think?), so there's more competition. Some domestic airlines have been trying the Ryanair model, but I'd like to see what would happen if Ryanair was able to expand to the states.

This also means that foreign airlines can't operate flights between US cities, even if they'd be a leg of a larger journey. Instead they're reliant on US carriers to get people to their hubs. Toronto, for example, is the largest hub for Air Canada, and they have flights to dozens of American cities. There's no real fear that Canadian planes are any less safe than American ones, yet you can't use Air Canada to fly on a single ticket from an American city, via Toronto, to another American city. Air Canada's website won't even let you search for flights between two American destinations.

It's even worse for someone like Air Emirates. They only have a handful of places they fly out of in the states, so if you're flying from Dubai to somewhere not on that list you'd need another ticket. Maybe they'd like to do a San Francisco to NYC to Dubai flight, moving to a collector model, but they're stuck doing point to point. I'd imagine flying people into a domestic collector city first would be cheaper than the many non-stop flights they currently have.

My concern isn't that there will be widespread unemployment, it's more that there will be a higher barrier of entry to the labor market and/or high skill workers will displace low skill workers. Let's say that 20% of entry level or unskilled labor jobs are replaced by automation, but an equal amount of skilled labor or knowledge oriented jobs are created. Basically, jobs that require training or experience.

Well, training and experience aren't free. You can't just show up and start welding things. There's apprenticeships or union schools or maybe you're lucky enough know someone with a welding kit, but you need to learn how to weld first. It's not entirely one of those artificial market barriers. Bad welds can create structural integrity issues and can be difficult to fix so they've got to be done right the first time. It's skilled labor, and skills take time to acquire.

These newly created jobs require some kind of capital to access. Could be just money to pay for education, or could be social capital of knowing the right people, or time spent learning the skill, but you're not gonna show up for the job. There's plenty of reasons why someone would have trouble finding that capital. Maybe they work to help support the family and don't have the time for education. There could be any number of reasons though that getting new skills is difficult, and there's no mail room for you to start in and work your way up to management. What happens when you can't afford bootstraps?

Also, as industries change or new industries are created, this can make it harder to transition to other industries if your skills don't transfer. You better have some savings or safety net while you retrain for a new industry if yours is collapsing. So, while I'm not sold that we'll have widespread unemployment, but I think it's more likely that social mobility takes a hit and the inequality gap widens.

There's some evidence that this is already happening and while more people are graduating the number of jobs requiring those degrees isn't increasing as fast, so higher skilled workers are pushing lower skilled workers down the ladder.

Not to mention that things are changing faster and faster (that exponential innovation curve), so changes that could wait for a new generation will need to be addressed sooner.

I think accuracy is worth discussing, because even a 99% accurate system can produce poor results if the signal it's searching for is rare. Wikipedia has some good examples about this.

One of the examples is about terrorism, with 100 out of 1 million people being terrorists and a 99% accurate system. Being 99 percent accurate, 99 out of the 100 terrorists will trigger the alarm, but so will about 9,999 law abiding citizens. Given an individual that triggered the alarm, there's a less than 1% chance they're actually a terrorist.

Don't forget the jobs providing services to the people that drive the trucks. Many of those are going to be lost like those old rail and highway towns that built up and then bust when the popular routes changed.
