No, the only rules that Google actually enforces are about security, scamming, trademark and stuff like that.
While there are guidelines for making better apps, google is happy to publish anything.
Since when is google in charge of app functionality and UI??

Edit: Despite all their shortcomings, I wouldn't mind seeing android phone makers join force and create an independent app store.

Xiaomi devices are officially sold in EU. Wouldn't a GDPR violation basically kill the company??
Note that Xiaomi is a Chinese startup hub, started by former googlers. 90% of what they sell is produced by Chinese startups.
(That being said, I would use never Xiaomi software myself. I only use their hardware with open source 3rd party apps)

I think the Australian government pretty successfully turned people against Facebook.
Facebook went far when they removed government information including covid articles and the with a little help from the government most aussies saw that as "the evil corporation is blackmailing an entirely nation".
Which is really what it was, so that's that.
You can also turn off sponsored tiles, so this isn’t different in that respect.
The point is, I should not need to keep a close eye on Mozilla and disable stuff regularly. I should not need to fight my browser.
I desperately need a browser extension that automatically disables the latest shenanigans from my browser vendor.
Something like ublock with an open list maintained by the community. That way, I won't need to keep up with the latest crazy ideas Mozilla suits come up with to earn 0.01% more while annoying 99% of their costumers.

Maybe web technologies have gotten too complicated. Maybe they need to be replaced with something that does not cost hundreds of millions to support?
Mozilla is getting hundreds of millions of dollars to set Google as the default search engine. You can change that in 10 seconds.
How are these stupid additions better for anyone? Consumers find them more annoying and they probably don't result in any significant month for Mozilla.
Anyway, we need another open source browser, one that is controlled by the community and not some SV company.

I am a bit surprised by this. Why did this happen? Let's consider som possible explanations:
* Schools: School laptops were already a thing, I don't see how pandemic can significantly change those numbers.
* Price: Chromebooks are now much more expensive. And there are more cheap windows laptops now.
* Ease of use: Maybe this is tech savvy people buying laptops for their grandparents so they can keep in touch?
I don't know the answer. But as much as I hate recommending google products, chromeos is now a really good option for a lot of people.
I would actually be happy with some well planned machine review and some clean rules that are actually enforced.

This is not entirely correct. AMDs existing CPUs beat M1 quite comfortably.
Where M1 shines is power usage under load. That's what it's fanless, hence even longer battery life.
On android 9+, giving it the permission is not enough.
You must also enable the GPS and wait for it to lock your position :( :( :(
So yeah, it's a function designed to force you give away your location (masquerading as a privacy feature)
