i think it’s perfectly fine to invest public money on things that improve everyone’s lives. for me and and many others fiber provides a much higher quality of living even if it doesn’t bring extra growth economically.
for what it’s worth i did triplebyte as well and it was actually a really good interview process. I didn’t end up accepting an offer from any of their companies but I thought they asked very practical things instead of just algorithms.
in my experience a lot of the younger people spend a lot of the day at work messing around. (socializing etc). they also come in for breakfast and dinner and go to the gym. and then stay late working since they didn’t get much work done during the day. If you naively count the hours spent at the office it does indeed add up to 80

why? university faculty isn’t all that impressive? they are usually just people who made the choice to stay in school longer while others wanted to do something useful right away. many google engineers are phds. but once again this doesn’t mean anything
i work at google but have no idea what solid is. but i can do dynamic programming. i guess it’s what they select for

the problem at google is there are radical activities believing everything is type 2. there’s something to be said about solving problems internally. And in many cases no real problem exists but the person “whistle blowing” just wants to feel special or be an activist

right but how do you factor in longer commutes for existing residents? or current residents having to move or have their children go to different schools? What is your dollar value on that? and before you say that isn't relevant, thats the exact mindset that brought us trump. valuing the dollar value over quality of life of existing people. it also outsources alot of the quality of life to visa holders instead of residents.

your model relies on the fact that this would all be additional tax revenue that wasn't collected earlier. While a lot of these jobs can be people who already work in NY and simply switch jobs. In addition, it neglects the cost to the govt of servicing this company and all its employees. It also neglects the negative externalities and consequences for current residents (only looking at it through a money lens which is a typical neoliberal fallacy).

i’ve only noticed at least teams/products in google that are more stagnant or don’t have as much work to do. therefore they compete and are territorial with the work. other products that are growing there is plenty for everyone
my guess is that won’t happen until they have significant market share. right now they are playing catch up and having higher prices wouldn’t help
