The website is taking advantage of the naivety of young women. I would not call it "benign management", just like, for example, I would also not say that online casinos are "benign" just because they are fully legal. Then it would be more appropriate to say that the website is not a pimp, but a madam.

I'm only in my late 20s but have managed to rid myself of the pursuit/worry/desire/envy of being a great mathematician. What I worry about now is how to approach the subject with my children. Because on one hand I do not want them to not be ambitious as younglings. But I also do not want them to experience the crushing disappointment of realizing they are not talented, as that was one of the hardest bitter pills of my life.

I did not intend to ask a question. I know for sure that a lot of potheads really want to push their recreational drug as a miracle do all drug, while ignoring all the negative effects. The negative effects are well documented science. The positive effects are all vaporous claims from questionable studies.

Really goes to show the objectivity of HN, that I get downvoted for this.

I did not try to go vegetarian, but out of interest I tried to expand my eating habits and I find it very hard to replace meat with an adequate source of protein.

  * Beans and lentils give me digestive problems, so I can have them maybe twice a month at most.
  * Dairy is fine, but it is not better than consuming meat at all in any respect, so what's the point? Chicken and pork are better than diary if you care about ecological impact.
  * Nuts are very expensive, I have them anyway, but I could not see them as a reliable source of protein due to cost.
  * Eggs are fine, but I can only have so much in a week before I get fed up.
  * Veggie alternatives taste and smell terrible in my experience.
  * I liked tofu, nothing to write home about in terms of taste, but I can see myself having it once a week.
  * I also eat canned herring and wild caught salmon. Haven't checked on their ecological impact but it is a good source of protein for once a week.
But really, there is nothing that can match the nutritional density of a piece of chicken, pork or beef. It is packed with protein and easily digestible, you can buy it at any store, you can cook it very easily in a variety of ways, and you can rest assured you have a complete meal if you have it with a side of greens and some carbs.

Not the definite answer but some observations I see here in Germany: 1. University spinoffs which only exist on paper: all founders and early employees hold paid positions at the university and the spinoff is I think more of a way to deal with intellectual property, do more effective marketing and build business relationships. 2. They run on government research grants. 3. Eventually they might start selling some software/hardware they developed as a byproduct but which was not their core research effort, or they start using their highly educated employee base with their niche expertise to start building/selling a product/service that is related to their research effort, but not quite as ambitious.

You got it right. Lots of people here think this is some sort of big conspiracy by lizards to build a surveillance state. In truth, it is simply software companies that have surveillance products to sell lobbying the government.

Source: at my German uni there are many recruitment drives from these entities

Have to roll my eyes every time I see doctors having to deal with this issue. They cannot just outright say what is common sense, without causing an outcry. So they have to wiggle around issue. "Appropriately planned" is the key phrase.

Early on in my career I noticed that the most fun programming seems to be done by people who are not actually trained as computer scientists: mathematicians, physicists, engineers, chemists, astronomers ...etc This sort of numerical computing and simulation stuff is incredibly fun and quite rewarding. You work much more often on core logic and much less often on boring fluff. Of course it is all very subjective and it pays shit. So the answer is: research at a research uni, employed by an applied mechanical engineering lab, but trained as a mathematician.

I buy used furniture. There is an insane amount of good quality used furniture that is sold or even given away for free. What you have to look out for is that it is made of good quality wood i.e. not particle board or other engineered woods. Everything else is then up to your taste.

I do not do it because I am cheap. You literally cannot find the same quality as new. I know because my uncle is a carpenter. The only way to get the same quality new is to commission the piece yourself, but then it takes lots of time and lots and lots of money. And I refuse to furnish my house with IKEA particleboard crap.

I do not think this is the right question you should be asking.

Your aim should not be to want to do a Ph.D. Your aim should be to want to get involved in a particular research area that you are already interested in, and you see that opportunities at academic institution are better suited to accomplish this goal.

To me it sounds like you just want to do a Ph.d for the title.

When I was contemplating a Ph.d I started out like you, just wanting to do it for a title. But after spending time as a research assistant in my pre-Ph.d phase I realized that just "doing a Ph.d" is not at all what I wanted. I wanted to work on something I was passionate about. Else it was better not to attempt anything at all.

Random idea, have you tried applying at a university? Sometimes big research groups have additional employees (not Ph.ds or postdocs) who just assist in software development. Due to the low salaries they are always desperate for hiring. Also there are a lot of older employees in the IT departments at universities, so maybe ageism would be less of an issue. Not sure how they deal with ex-convicts.

If you had a button you could press which would magically make all weapons on earth disappear, what will you have achieved? You would have just transformed the power structure and taken the might away from those with physical weapons, and delivered this might to those with big muscles and the ability to coordinate with others like them to give you a good beating.

But all that aside, I talk about magic buttons because such a law would be impossible to enforce, and certainly not globally.
