The quality of HN has decreased considerably over the last 4 years or so, much like the rest of society sadly. Posts like this, to me, should just be removed. There is little valid discussion, it's drowned out by nonsense and political pandering. Posts like these are no better than r/politics or r/conservative.

HN used to be above this drivel, and actually had thoughtful replies. I hope dang and company push for a less politics focused approach because it's degrading here, rapidly. I have flagged this post, but I doubt it will do much.

I don't buy this. Rich people already have better schools and will do better anyway. The divide is growing not because of schooling but because of the centralization of wealth.

Choice of schools will just lead to more centralization and it won't be any different than it is now. It doesn't really solve the underlying problem.

I'm not sold on gifted education, but I am sold on providing advanced classes for students who are further along.

I don't believe you are gifted or not. If I did, I wouldn't be as successful as I am, because I didn't start out as "gifted."

Yea this is benefit decreases every day. The "cord-cutting" phenomenon is dead. Want to watch a discovery show? Oh great, it's only on Discovery plus now, $5 a month. Want to watch Premier League soccer? Peacock Premium! Cobra Kai? Netflix... marvel? Disney+. Oh but you can't watch THIS nfl game on here because it's blacked out locally for TV. Champions League soccer? Sign up for CBS All Access. Can't forget HBO Max!

When you add everything up, cable for me was actually cheaper. But now I'm screwed, because they aren't putting shows on TV channels anymore to get people to sub to their streaming service.

Yea that's what I said - you need to have important/urgent controls physically on the stalk because it's faster than voice commands. What am I not getting? Slow is clearly the problem - that's why they're on the stalk.

Voice controls do a help a lot in many usecases, but are still slower than a physical button in many others.

The problem is that basic controls got moved into touch screen interfaces.

Before I could turn my fan speed knob by feel. It was "stepped" so I knew what level it was at when I moved it, if it was min/max. Same with heat and cool. Knob to adjust what vents. All could be done with eyes on the road.

Now? OK you can change climate control, go into touch screen, open up controls, tap to change 5 times to different vents, some crap slider to control fan speed, all requiring to look in order to see where to touch. The lack of tactile feedback just sucks.

On a phone yea sure it's great because I'm looking at it when I use it - it's function is to look at it. Not in a car.

Those two things are not in conflict with each other: a sizable percentage of Trump voters may have been counting on the fact that they could secretly vote in order to protect themselves and even their jobs.

Being "pro-trump" doesn't make the death not count. 3 of the five died because of the protests - it doesn't matter which side. You can argue that a stroke/heart attack may not have happened in a non-high pressure environment.

We don't need any more evidence than the mountains of video of people storming the capital. It's bad enough as is, it could have been far, far worse.

Trump continually attacked the media, Trump literally said the media was the enemy of the people. He would ignore questions from other agencies, even those without bias.

Until people in their own parties start standing up for principled government it will never change.

The problem is now moderates are getting forced to join sides - which leads to even more polarizing candidates.

I'd be very wary of any studies that ask people to identify "activity level."

It costs time and value when you really can't control it.

No matter what there will be attrition for reasons completely outside of a company's control. You find a comfortable attrition rate for your business. if it's too high you deal with it.

Academic BS is just as bad, if not worse. You have far less options. It's way easier to just "find another job" than it is to "find another phd program" and colleges/professors abuse the shit out of it.

You don't bother thinking about that. Over time you have a large enough sample size for attrition rate and you hire based off that. it doesn't matter if a few leave, a few will always leave.

HN is filled with ultra talented devs getting offers.

Exactly this. Many people are introduced to it in college at this point.

Also too the world they grow up in is far different. Computing for us was a lot more intensive to them, who now just pull one right out of their pocket.

In general anything related to IT isn't "well-regarded." Even compared to regular engineering professions/doctors/lawyers all hold more prestige.

Apple isn't ripping off anyone. They're taking their cut of sales based off the value of providing access to a high paying market that has a non-negligible cost. The point is - Epic is not doing this "for the market." They're doing it because they want more money for themselves - which is fair, but they are using a service which provides them revenue. That should not be free. For that matter, they have a monopoly over their store as well - should they have to allow third party "VBucks" stores? It's absurd.

It clearly is worth that, in fact, probably much more - others on this thread that support your POV have said the App Store generates twice the revenue of Android. It's not just the convenience - it simply makes devs more money. Cutting the app store will tank developer value instantly. Developers will lose big time in this event. There will be many on here that will begin to complain as their salary dips. Also apple already cut the fee for smaller apps. So what's the real problem? I have yet to see any tangible evidence of consumer harm.

And App Store can be as curated.....

That opens the door for malware and a poor customer experience. I can see my mom now being tricked into downloading a privacy invading app. my dad's android is a nightmare. It destroys the product.

There isn't market inefficiency. It's hard to argue monopoly of a company that has 20% of the market. The IE/Windows debate is far different. Both DOMINATED the market. This simply isn't true in this case.

The fact is every time this comes up on HN people just hate Apple, but never look at the actual merit of the arguments. It isn't a monopoly (less than 20% global marketshare), its fees aren't exorbitant based on the value it provides developers, and end consumers get a clean, relatively safe experience. No one is losing, except megacorps like Epic who want to make a little more money.
