In the last 10 years the longest I went without Internet was during trans pacific flights, so never longer than 15 hours. I think this level of connection —- basically intermittent connection during the entire waking hours —- is super common in today’s society.

If I was disconnected for longer than 30 hours w/o prior knowledge of being disconnected it would mean something seriously bad has happened to me, and it would be nice if my next of kin had access to all the documents they would need to settle my affairs.

Fusion would provide (much) more energy, use (much) less radioactive inputs, and produce (much) less radioactive outputs. Fusion is significantly safer. In a failure mode the fusion reaction will lose containment and die out like a fire without oxygen. Fission rods will continue to produce heat & radiation in a failure mode, and all failure modes of a fission power plant need to account for this.

I’m actually pro fission, because the risks of fission are lower than the risks of coal, oil, and natural gas. Yes, the article was hyperbolic. However, you’re under-hyping the advancement of fusion. When fusion comes it will be politically palpable globally, cleaner than fission, and it will reduce the cost of energy significantly.

There’s inclusive evidence that intelligence is fixed, and there’s evidence that people that believe intelligence is fixed have worse outcomes.

I think it’s very likely environmental factors and personal mindset have considerable impacts both positive and negative on intelligence. I also suspect in the next decade or two research will come out on pharmaceuticals that show improved mental performance. There’s already the beginnings of this.

The developing world, a group very cost sensitive and unlikely to switch for environmental reasons, is putting gasoline vehicles on the road much faster than the developed road is taking them off.

For electric vehicles to eat the world they have to be cheaper than gasoline counterparts. Not only for luxury electric vehicles to be cheaper than luxury gasoline vehicles, but for the cheapest gasoline motorcycle/scooter/car to be more expensive than the cheapest electric motorcycle/scooter/car. Given the current cost materials inside a battery/electric engine compared to the current cost of materials inside a combustion engine it’s unlikely to happen with our current approach.

Please don’t consider my initial statement questioning a metaphor to mean that people that have suffered a psychotic episode or are likely to suffer a psychotic episode in the near future should avoid medication. The threshold for considering medication should be lower than a psychotic episode.

My concern is the metaphor in which many people are viewing mental health, not in the treatments themselves.

I find the chemical imbalance metaphor for mental illness the opposite of empowering and an easy well to sell pharmaceuticals.

It’s a really extreme diet. I would be concerned with the fat intake, the cholesterol intake, and limits on certain fruits and vegetables.

They are also for 7-8 bite sized 250 calorie meals every other waking hour.

No, I wouldn’t say this is modern consistent dietary advice. So many people that make it there business to talk about diet are hyping intermittent fasting now.
