Wouldn't the high temperatures void that test though? I'd have thought screen burn will differ depending on screen temperature.

While I absolutely love the concept and really want to buy a graphics card just to play with this on my development box. Find it quite exciting how some applications are utilising graphics processing power.

But I can't help but wonder what the sys admin's response is going to be when I start asking for additional graphics cards being added to his perfectly built 2U database servers!

Thanks for this, currently a PHP contractor looking for work in the UK and this certainly opens my eyes up to the issues with my CV. Probably explains why I haven't been getting many interviews!

What would you suggest for a contractors CV which is primarily filled with 1-2 month contracts?

I usually try get the last years work on the CV, but as you can imagine that starts to take up quite a bit of room when you have many short term contracts.

But until we have DP1.3 and external matching 5K thunderbolt display this really isn't for me. The authors comments regarding the previous thunderbolt display "However, the Retina display does make things on the other 2560x1440 displays look… a little grody." really do put me off.

Some interesting points but I personally don't agree with most of them.

Time machine, I personally hated the previous interface. Always felt it was clunky and slow.

Icons are pretty poor but they are so small on my screen it's something I can live with.

The font! Oh where to begin, after using this font for hours on end now I thought I would have got use to it, but something just isn't quite right with it!

Overall I personally am still in a mixed opinion on Yosemite, it took almost 2 days to get my work machines (iMac 2011 and rMBP 2014) back into a usable state. Almost everything was broken, network drivers (I use 10GbE), my IDE, VM environments, file sync, backups.

But worse of all they seem to have changed the mouse acceleration settings! As a long time suffer of RSI/Carpal Tunnel Syndrome I have learnt to manage it so well that most of the time I forget I even suffer with this. One of the best ways for me to manage it was to purchase a Razer Mamba mouse, which worked flawlessly in Mavericks. Installed Yosemite and the mouse was unusable even on the mouses slowest setting, tried another mouse, same issue. Completely unusable! After spending hours upon hours searching for a solution and setting my RSI off to levels which I couldn't sleep for 2 days! I finally found the USBOverdrive app which lets me control the accelerations to something which matches Mavericks. One week later I am still suffering with pretty bad pain in my wrist!

I'm in the midlands and lucky to get £350 and have been pretty lucky to work with some huge brand names to make my portfolio shine, but clearly this isn't enough!

Even with years of ZF experience I still seem to struggle to find good interesting contracts in the region.

Nice build, I have something similar but with 3TB disks. My disks are grouped into 8 disks as the thought of trying to recover the whole array if that fails I'd probably cry a little.

Also I invested in 10GbE, at first was only server to server using some SFP+ NICs and DAC leads I picked up off eBay for between £10 and £80. But have since bought a couple of Dell 5524 switches and a PCIe enclosure for my Mac and having 650MB/s read/write to my server from the desktop certainly reduces the waiting around :)

Heard this argument a few times and mostly I do agree, but in certain scenarios I'm not willing to spend a whole day on some perfect code when I can do it in a hour with some comments explaining it.

My scenarios for this typically include: * Disposable project, eg prototyping an idea for a client * I have an impossible deadline and I'm on a fixed project rate, maybe I should have quoted more, who knows, it happens

Just basing this on my own experience I have 12 drives in RAID which have a fairly substantial sequential throughput. Start multiple streams of high bandwidth videos and the maximum throughput from the drives drops sharply due to the random reads.

I would have assumed that having even 100 people streaming from a single box would be an interesting challenge.

Personally I have no problems with comments in code for complex functions etc. But pointless comments like this below drives me insane.

Agreed! While I find these advancements in technology intriguing, I use to love going to the cinema but the thought of going to the cinema these days when it is such a disappointing experience these days.

Two biggest points which put me off: 1) People on mobile phones, texting/facebooking etc is bad enough but when did it become acceptable to answer the phone mid film?! 2) Anti piracy adverts, I have just paid £9 or something ridiculous to watch a film! I do not want to see a 1 minute about how I wouldn't steal a handbag!

When I think about the amount of money I have spent on my home cinema I do cry a little inside, but as a huge movie fan I'd much rather wait for it to be released and buy the blu-ray (for the same price as going to the cinema by the time you have factored a £4 drink into it, parking etc), rip to hard disk and strip the adverts off it and have the ability to pause it :)

I'm in the exact same position at the moment, have a fairly substantial amount of savings which I was planning on putting towards a deposit on my first house, but after looking there isn't much around within my price range which looks like something I'd enjoy improving (absolutely love DIY!) and living in (being self employed seems to be a huge red flag for lenders!).

I am fairly happy with my life, but its just a bit boring and I guess lonely at times. Sometimes finding myself trying to make small talk with people at the gym or in a supermarket as I haven't had any face to face interaction with another human for days at a time! I did go to university and lived in shared accommodation for a number of years and had the time of my life, but since living on my own I seem to have become a bit of a recluse and not as outgoing as I once was. Doesn't help that many of my friends are in relationships/permanently skint and are not willing to go out and do things.

Two of my main clients are located in London and I work remotely from home, both of which have said they would be fine with me travelling as long as I kept within a few hours time difference. Occasionally I am required to attend meetings in London at the cost of around £100-160 for a return train ticket, flights from a european country would probably cost me the same!

My biggest problems are pushing myself to do something new and out of my comfort zone and breaking the ice with new people as I am incredibly shy at first. Oh and not forgetting I have the worst hangovers of all time lasting anything from 2-4 days! haha

As a bit of a Apple fan boy I think it's a terrible match. The quality of all the Apple products I have owned have been brilliant (even if my iPhone screen smashed within a month). I personally hope the acquisition of this brand doesn't result in the gimmicky promotions like on the HP laptop brands etc

This article lost me at the part suggesting that Dre Beats are premium headphones. Having listened to a few different sets of these "cool" headphones I can personally think they are overpriced crap, don't think they are worth more than £20-30 tops simply based on audio quality. People are simply buying them as a fashion item!

In answer to How will you get exposed to a range of technologies outside what your employer uses, and a range of problems outside your work domain? Get thrown in at the deep end, put my headphones on and work it out. Hasn't failed me yet!
