This is likely because your eyes are not closing all the way when you sleep. Close your eyes casually and have someone look. They probably will see the whites of your eyes. Try training yourself to close your eyes completely when you sleep. Tape them shut if necessary. See if that helps.

While I applaud creatively exploring new programming language concepts, I find this language confusing. Both the compiler and the flight simulator appear to be vibe coded. The documentation for the language is full of errors or things that don't make sense, and the bootstrap code is a nightmare. It looks like the bootstrap make process requires the bootstrapping code to exist already. Your flight simulator code does not appear to make use of the contract capabilities at all. Am I missing something? Did you actually bootstrap this in another language first? Did the contract capabilities help you during the coding process?

Perhaps the term "canalization" fits? Coined by C.H. Waddington, describing the process of forming a chreode in a homeorhetic system. But it doesn't really encompass the "everything becomes overly generalized" concept you mentioned. Rather, it's more about robustness against perturbation of a trajectory in a conceptual space. Christopher Alexander called them 'paths in configuration space'.

Hello HN! We have hired a number of people from this monthly "Who is hiring?" post. Please don't be put off by how spare our website is. We are doing very exciting work at the nexus of biology and computer science, and we would love to talk to you. If you've reached out recently but haven't heard back, we appreciate your patience as we work through a backlog of submissions. We have primary offices in Mountain View, CA and Philadelphia, PA - so even though we have a number of remote and hybrid employees, we're particularly excited about hiring local people.

Nobias is a new pharma startup using a variety of built-from-scratch, custom AI tools to speed drug development. As an early stage biotech, we use large repositories of biological data, bleeding edge deep learning techniques, automated reasoning, and computational biochemistry to discover and develop new medicines, diagnostics/biomarkers, and biological insights for a variety of diseases, particularly pediatric rare diseases. If you have strong programming chops, a background in machine learning, and deep knowledge of biology or computational chemistry, we would love to speak with you.

Multiple roles are available - right now we are particularly concentrating on expanding our stable of AI engineers who have deep expertise in modern ML techniques. You should understand these techniques at the deepest level possible, and be able to extend existing research and construct new concepts from scratch, while also understanding cell and molecular biology very well. Finally, we are also recruiting for a leader in Translational Research. This position will focus more on outstanding biology knowledge and the process of moving from concept to validation.

Broadly speaking, engaging in a task activates the task-positive network, which actively suppresses the default mode network [1][2][3]. This likely happens during meditation [4], as during properly done meditation, one is supposed to be focused on the task of breathing. But this can be interrupted, particularly by stray thoughts/salience/attention shifts [5].

Nobias is a new pharma startup using a variety of AI tools to accelerate drug development and drive towards predictable discovery. As an early stage biotech, we use large repositories of proprietary biological data, bleeding edge deep learning techniques, automated reasoning, and computational biochemistry to discover and develop new medicines, diagnostics, and insights for a variety of diseases, particularly pediatric rare diseases. If you have strong programming chops, a background in machine learning, and deep knowledge of biology or computational chemistry, we would love to speak with you.

Multiple roles available, particularly for Deep Learning/ML engineers, computational biologists with expertise in systems biology, and extremely strong programmers looking to move into the biotech space. We are also looking for an operations/business development director (see our post here - https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/3416697042/). Finally, we are always on the lookout for exciting people with integrity, intelligence, and the desire to work in an AI pharma company, particularly people with other business skills (clinical operations, program management, executive assistant, other business roles, etc).

Not always true - but finding a very good programmer who knows the domain well enough to make a significant impact is challenging.

This does not have to be true. You can certainly pursue interesting biology research questions informed by a software engineering POV.

The chemistry requirements are minimal. You should understand the difference between ionic and covalent bonds, how van der Waals forces work, hydrophobicity, solubility, and the effects of catalysts on reaction transition states. It will also be important to understand what reaction kinetics are and what pH means. An understanding of buffers might be useful.

I would argue that, to understand the book, you specifically don't need to know electrochemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organometallics, spectroscopy, or even physical chemistry.

If you want to find good jobs like this, you should check out the monthly HN "Who is hiring" threads. There aren't that many biotechs, but there are a few (like ours). I agree about the need for better tooling. There's also a need for a stronger conceptual understanding of cell biology generally, and an ability to build an ecosystem of APIs that work well together. My email is in my profile if you'd like to talk more about this space.

OCaml Exercises 4 years ago

Generally, our stance is to prefer strictness, impurity, and clarity of analysis around speed and memory usage, instead of laziness, purity, and elegance. Also I prefer the Ocaml module system and its FFI, though I am wistful about Haskell's typeclasses.

OCaml Exercises 4 years ago

We'll be using Ocaml extensively for building out certain aspects of our pharmaceutical research and development platform.
