One thing used a lot before CSS and JS was the "usemap" attribute in the img tags to make hyperlinks within images. You had to indicate the coords and whether the shape of the hiperlink was a poly, rect or circle.
So at the end of the day Google are a full monopoly that can do what they want... Nothing new under the sun.
Nice site, thanks for sharing. I really didn't know any better since Alexa (which was shutdown a while ago) or the "Top Websites" tab of similarweb.com (quite biased)
There were several services that were lost due to the increase in the cost of access to the API ... now this, smh =__=
