I was also on mIRC and downloading from newsgroups regularly.

I think many ISP's would give you guides about using email/newsgroups back then as those services were considered required for an ISP. TUCOWS was super popular for this newfangled WinSOCK software (TUCOWS stands for The Ultimate Collection Of WinSOCK Software). I remember testing how fast the first consumer cable internet connections were by downloading from them.

This seems pretty straight forward, reject the PR's with detailed responses until they are of acceptable quality. Doing so might slow momentum with the project in the short term but should overall make everything faster. Just be clear about WHY you are rejecting the PR's and the quality you expect.

Whenever I interview someone I explain what Full Stack means to me. As a small team we have to support the full stack of development. That means

  * provisioning and updating servers
  * installing and configuring software on those servers
  * keeping server system software up to date (Apache/MySql/Php/etc)
  * maintaining and developing custom frameworks
  * writing all the admin tooling for getting sites up and running and configured
  * working in our backends including writing queries
  * designing databases and migrations
  * maintaining deployment of new code and version control
  * setting up build systems for our apps
  * designing frontend systems (how they use api's, deployment of them, stores, etc..)
  * writing components and styling them

While I am a Senior/Team Lead and don't expect people to be experts in all of that stuff, debugging requires at least being willing to take on any of that.

The author seems to think that just frontend development requires all your mental capacity. I really don't want this to come off as me being arrogant but feel very confident in my skills in everything he described AND I do all of the above web stuff and more. I also manage a team and meetings and timelines and quotes and resourcing and sales questions etc... It's not that hard. And I know I am not a 10x or 100x dev (maybe 2-3x)

When I hire, It's ONLY junior devs.

I prefer just out of University before they can get bad habits. Training a dev takes me 6-12 months for them to break even productivity wise.

When we have had intermediate or seniors hired they would not listen to anyone else or care if their software was easy to maintain in the future. I run a small team of 6, I have had 0 turnover for 3-4 years.

I don't want devs who "get it done" I want devs that enjoy the work and want to share it.

I like the feel of it but I gave up trying to add my 206 tracked shows. and it is impossible to mark a series as watched.

FYI I currently use https://www.pogdesign.co.uk/cat/ and I would look at that for ideas (I've been using it for over a decade.

I use in browser crypto to get "better than plaintext" encryption for my login pages. I am dealing with a server infrastructure that won't let me easily or cheaply add https to client sites. I use a 512BIT RSA Key Pair regenerated every 5-10 seconds. I know it could be MITM'ed or Brute forced in about a day or two. Its not real security, but it is better than nothing. I wanted to stop sniffing for http logins (would have mitigated that cloudflare issue last week).

I've been procrastinating on moving our app to aws because this was not supported, I was going to have to rewrite some horrible code to support using s3 for scaling (EFS is not in the new Canada region). This should save me a few hundred hours!

The tool I have found very useful is goimports https://godoc.org/golang.org/x/tools/cmd/goimports really great for automatically adding and removing imports.

no BeOS?

1996 - age 14. I had just gotten a computer at home I could use. I took computer science class in summer school (extra credit. Summers without school suck). Watcom basic. A year and a half later my professor gave up and gave me the wbasic manual so I could play with non ascii which he did not understand. I was 99% sure I would be working in pure math before then. I always loved solving problems or puzzles. Computers seemed to give me more options. Played with Linux/BeOS/Visual Basic. (And a very little java/Delphi). Got my BsC, now I lead a team of 5+ and work in any language/framework I want.

Quality software is pretty easy to define and you described it.

Quality software is software that works for everyone who uses it. That is usually a very long list

I was rewriting a bunch of custom scrips a few months ago and would have been lost without this tool finding my mistakes.

I consider myself to be a full stack developer. I started working on small layers like every developer. Eventually through need, knowdge transfer and bugs I developed the skills from hardware to software Linux/apache/mysql to code (I'm my case usually php) to HTML and CSS and js. With a variety of tools and frameworks along the way. These skills are required to face the variety of challenges and new projects that come. Not knowing how to configure apache would make me a worse developer.

The PHP Virgin QUIZ is full of wrong answers!

1. To run PHP code it needs to be processed by a web server. They say TRUE. The answer is FALSE. - php-cli is used a lot (composer/phpunit/etc...)

2. If you inspect the source of a web page, will you ever see the PHP code? They Say YES. The Answer is FALSE - I mean maybe if you enable phps (php source) in your web server, but in most usage never.

4.In the following code snippet, 'print' is what? <?php print("Hello beautiful world!"); ?> They say it s a variable. That might be true given that a variable can be a closure function, but the real answer is a function!
