Wired ethernet resolves most of my own teams/zoom/webex etc anxiety that any glitches in anyones meeting video or audio are probably NOT caused by my own connection....

The STe came pretty close with DMA stereo audio playback, though only at 4 sample rates so software resampling and mixing was still required. I did a lot of my own tracking on an 8Mhz 1040STe then later a 16Mhz MegaSTe.

At 16mhz I could do 25Khz playback with full software mixing, or with the 50Khz playback mode the playback routine would "cheat" by just alternating the samples for the two channels per speaker which used less CPU but produced a high frequency squeal that was easily filtered by turning down the treble on your stereo :)

I can kind of relate to the feeling of IPv6 being "new and scary" to back in 1995 when I barely grasped IPv4 routing... everything becomes clear eventually with experience and exposure... hopefully eventually I'll understand more IPv6 concepts with time. I "want to believe". :)

But I do fully get that firewall without NAT is perfectly fine (great) in an IPv6 world - but may be necessary in simpler multi-ISP routing scenarios...

It's not secure at all, as some services (PayPal!) Allow password reset via SMS to your regitered mobile number. So if someone even has control of your mobile number via sim swap for 5 minutes they gain full control of your paypal acct. Heard of enough incidents of this earlier this year through one of the Canadian prepaid mobile flanker brands...

Paypal makes it hard to remove a mobile number from your account once it's on there too...

If a bank "MUST" have a phone number, I lean towards providing my good ol landline number since in theory thats a "little" harder to instantly take over or port out.

Worthwhile to "test" what it takes to reset a password on your various critical services...

You can setup a receive connector on exchange online to trust mail from specified souce IP(s) (ie your onprem mailserver) with no need for additional mailbox licenses... good for alerting/reporting/MFP's etc

Most people don't know you can just dial ##004# to remove all conditional call forwards that normally default to voicemail. Or if the network doesn't unset it, you can set it to a deadend like * 004 *0000000000# - or some other fun automated line...

Heh, I built that site as a StarTAC fan all those years ago, and Jax decided to preserve it when I donated the server hard drives and my box of startacs to him heh... the real limitation with testmode was there was really only about 4 channels you could choose to snoop on, but nonetheless there were still enough AMPS calls in 95-2000 in dense urban areas to be somewhat interesting... heard a couple of "juicy" conversations that also mentioned a phone number - was tempted to freak them out by calling it haha

You must mean 8Khz - which results in a 64kbps stream. (8000 bytes per second) The companding was actually a very good use of 8 bits per sample for voice, introducing little artifacts except at high amplitudes and the low pass filter. Nowadays I find it ridiculous mobile networks feel it's still necessary to compress the audio further - 64Kbps is nothing on modern mobile networks, ie VoLTE etc... WB-AMR is definitely an improvement with it's 16Khz sample rate and a bitrate lower than that of G.711, but mostly not supported between different mobile carriers...

Even Windows 3.11, NT 3.51 did this... and my Atari ST... probably windows 1.0 even because a mouse was not always guaranteed to be attached and/or working on early PC's. In my case in the mid 90's I remember I sacrificed the serial port the mouse was attached to run another modem for dial-in access to our officer on NT 3.51 server... THAT tought me fast how to get around a windows desktop with the keyboard - and it impressed me you could access everything - switching windows, menus, etc without getting "stuck" . With a mac, your computer would be useless, or at best infuriating (ie using some plug in to slowly nudge the pointer around the screen with arrow keys....)

May not have been bad in the earlier sets as they would have used phosphors that persisted longer to compensate, but later on, manufacturing costs were driven down and the same tubes/coatings from 60hz sets were being used in 50hz sets, making the flicker much more apparent.

It would be pretty nifty if the latency and jitter is consistent enough to be used for basic SIP/VoIP. Under 100ms in general would be hard to notice latency much different than a mobile phone. Starlink could go as far as rolling their own VoIP service with guaranteed QoS. I would also hope during beta testing they are developing intelligent queuing to deprioritize bulk transfers, and optimize bursty traffic where latency would be most apparent.
